Topic: Number of naps at 16mths Posted: 14 January 2008 at 10:49am |
How many naps does your (approx) 16 month old have?
If possible, could you post your routine?
UP until 2 weeks ago, Elle was having 3.5 to 4 hours of nap time, spread over 2 naps. I think Elle she now needs less but the transition is not happening well so we have a big mess each day and then night wakings from overtiredness so I want to consider "manipulating" her routine a bit to see if we can get things back on track.
Essentially she is refusing her afternoon nap BUT she can't not stay up any longer than 3 hours first thing so we can't do 1 nap. She still seems to need 2 naps...if she doesn't have them the last hour or 2 of the day are all tears. I think perhaps I need to shorten her morning nap to 1 hour and then hopefully she'll go back to her longer afternoon nap.
Current routine
6.30 awake
7am up
10am nap
11.40 or 12noon awake
3.30pm...exhausted..try nap...won't sleep...just plays for an hour or more then gets up and is too tired to eat or play so goes to bed at about 6.30 with an empty tummy.
Doesn't call us in the night but is awake a lot as a result of overtiredness during the day.
She used to nap 3pm tp 5pm then go to bed happily at 7pm. This has suddenly changed.

sory Fiona no advice just hope Elle settles down soon for you
Ohh just 1 thing to add, I have started to give the girls their main meal around lunch time then as they are both tired earlier at the moment they are not needing too much to satisfy them so night meal is just light

*Benjy's Routine*
8:30 - 9 awake/get up
Breakfast
Bath
Play
Morning tea
Play
Lunch
1pm (ish) Nap approx 2 - 2.5 hours
Play
Afternoon tea
Play
Dinner
8.30 Bed
The only thing I can think of to help with Elle's transition is to gradually push her morning naptime forward. Even if it is just 10-20 minutes per day over a couple of weeks so that she is eventually used to staying awake longer in the mornings and napping in the early afternoon for one long period.
If you can arrange to do some interesting things to keep her stimulated in the mornings (but not too stimulated so that she gets really worn out and it backfires the next day) it might help with keeping her awake a bit longer.
I hope this helps, good luck Fiona!

Ashleigh is nearly 19 months but 16 months corrected. Our routine is:
6.30/7am wake/get up
7.30 breakfast
10.30 morning tea
11.00 nap for approx 2 hours
1.00ish lunch
3/3.30 afternoon tea
5.00 dinner
6.30 bath, bottle
7.00 bed
I would also see if you can gradually stretch out her awake time in the morning. Ashleigh was quite similar with not being able to stay up long and even now, could probably go to bed earlier if I let her but still wouldn't sleep in the arvo. I have tried giving her lunch first about 11.30 then bed but she is normally too tired to eat. I have found giving her morning tea about half an hour before bed keeps her occupied and fills her tummy a little so she can get through til she has her lunch after her nap.
Eta: just added dinner in as I missed it out!

I could try.
In the past if I keep her up for more than 3 hour first thing she'll only do a 20 or 40min nap as she is too tired and then either needs another one within an hour or will not settle again for a another nap due to overtiredness.
Argh. Funny how even the best sleepers go through this funny stages.

We changed it around so that Ayja got up at about 7 and had brekkie, had early morning tea about9.30, lunch by 11.30 in bed by 12, she then would sleep until about 3.30/4 and have dinner bath etc and play then bed at 6.30/7. That's what worked for us. and now she's older she sticks with the afternoon sleep - goes down between 12.30 - 1, wakes 1.5 - 2 hrs later and still goes to bed at 7.

We are not quite 16 months yet but Gina moved from having 2 naps a day (at around 11am and then at around 3pm) to having only 1 nap - from around 1:00pm to 3:30pm or so. Our routine is as follows:
7:30 wake up & bottle, then play time
9:00 breakfast
9:30-11:30 play time & outside time
11:30-12:00 lunch
12:00-1:00 play time - often quiet ie reading
1:00 bottle
1:00-3:30 nap
3:30-4:00 snack
4:00-6:00 play time
6:00-6:30 dinner
6:30-7:30 play time - often quiet ie reading or rolling in (our) bed etc
7:30-8:30 bed time routine & bottle
8:30 is bed time if we are lucky but I won't steal your topic

Wake at 6:30
Breakfast 7
Back to bed at 9:30 - 10
Lunch 12
Back to bed around 2:30 - 3ish
Dinner at 5

Guess it depends on how busy they are...whether teething...whether out and about????

Alyssa's "usual" day (she's about 17 1/2 months atm):
Wake 5:30am (usually when she hears DH get ready for work), but has a bit of milk then back to sleep
Real Wake up 7:30am
Breakfast 8:30am
Lunch 12pm
Nap 1pm (usually lasts 40mins to 1hour)
Dinner 5pm
Bed 7pm
So only 1 nap these days (since she was about 13 months old), and she has always had quite short naps but seems to cope well with what she has so I guess it's sufficient for her..

Brenna is nearly 15 months
7am - wake up, breakfast
Play
8.30 - bottle
Play
10 - morning tea
10.30 - 12ish - Nap
12.40 - lunch
Play
2 - bottle, rest in bed with a book for about 1/2 hour
Play
5 - dinner
6.30 - bath and bottle
7 - bed
These times are all 'ish'. Her drop from 2 sleeps to 1 happened at about 11 - 12 months and was a nightmare!!! Plunketline helped me to sort it out and now it's great. She doesn't always have a 'rest' in the arvo, only if she's tired.

Today Elle went back to her old nap style...1.5 hours in the morning and 2 hours this arvo but now she's been in bed for over 1 hour and is still playing and talking!
She clearly does need less daytime sleep. Why is transitioning so hard?!?!?!

Miss M has one long nap at day care but when she is at home she has to have 2 naps around 1.5-2 hours each nap. I think it's her way of catching up on the sleep she skips at daycare because she is too busy playing!

when rhyley is at daycare hes lucky if he has one sleep... but hes only there part time and he doesn't go to sleep very good there since theres other kids there.
At home his routine was (its been a while since we have been home all day but when we do this is the norm)
8 - 9am get up
bottle
breakfast
play
10.30- 11am bed
12.30 - 1pm get up
lunch
play
etc...
3.30pm another sleep
5-5.30pm wake up
dinner
play
7pm bath
bottle
7.30pm Bedtime
I think he will soon drop his morn sleep and probably have a longer sleep around 1pm - although my hours at work are going to change and I won't get home till 2.30pm so it will be pretty much in bed when we get home or else he may sleep too long.

My daughter has just the one sleep, and her day looks something like this:
7am wakeup, breakfast between 7-8am
Morning tea around 10am
Play
Lunch around 12 noon
Play
Beginning of sleep anywhere between 1-2pm, for an average of 2 hours
Afternoon tea when she wakes up
Play
Dinner around 6-6:30pm
Bedtime around 7:30pm

We're trying really hard as her decreased night sleep is a sign she needs less nap time but she just can't do it. She's been waking at 6am (never used to do that!) and by 10am I just can't force her to stay up any longer. She sleeps for anything from 40mins to 2.5 hours at that nap but still needs an afternoon nap.
I'm at a loss but will just keep trying.
