Topic: Iodine? Posted: 29 December 2010 at 7:19am |
Hi, am TTCing No 3...so taking folic acid etc (Elevit) but have heard recently that Iodine is recommended. Can someone shed more light on that....is that in addition to dietry iodine (like from iodised salt)..ie is it to counteract the fact the people are using fancy sea salts etc and not gettin iodine? or is it something else.

My midwife gave me a prescription to get some, but that was after I had had baby, as it is also recommended when breastfeeding. Reminds me, I should prob take it a bit more often .........

My mw told me to get some, DH went to buy some and the pharmacist said to get it on script, I then forgot till this thread came up
I just read some of that MOH stuff though, and will read more later but it seems it's only if you are deficient in it but you do need more when pregnant/breastfeeding. It did also say too much is dangerous though so I guess you need to work out if you actually need the supplement or not. I'm confused now!

I have started taking a pregnancy vitamin, the Blackmores one and it says on the front that it now has iodine like it's something new. I read in my bounty book something about it as well.

The info we got sent to the medical centre I work in said that most NZers are lacking in iodine. Suppliments have recently been recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women and are subsidised by the government. You will need to have it prescribed every 3 months but it only costs $3 rather than however much you pay for the over-the-counter stuff. Plus it's a standardised dose. The amount you need to take to be dangerous is a lot and would need to be over a long period of time. I would say unless you specifically eat a diet with plenty of Iodine (I want to meet you!!!) or are already taking suppliments containing iodine you wont need to worry about overdosing. As always discuss with you GP, OB or MW if you have any concerns.
Hope that helps!

Ahhhh i remember my mom harping on about this when i was first pregnant - apparently your midwife can subscribe it because its subsidised and recommended now. Or as you are TTC maybe your doctor can?
I totally forgot about it, guess its a bit late now

I also just tend to take the blackmores pregnancy.breastfeeding supplement, it has extra iodine, folic acid, iron etc in it. You can get it quite cheap at the supermarket too.

Bowie not too late to start as it's recommended/subsidised during breastfeeding as well. As far as I'm aware it's only subsidised during pregnancy and breastfeeding unlike folic acid but if TTC you could always try.

Elivit is low in iodine I think? I take a kelp supplement as an alternative to iodine, it's more for the thyroid history my family has.

Kel, i was always instructed to stay away from kelp and seaweed as it inhibits thyroid function (if have problems with your thyroid) and also counteracts any thyroid medication.
was told by the specialist who put me onto thyroid pills for my underactive one

I talked to my midwife-to-be today, and asked her about iodine, and she said its not until you're about 12 weeks along that they'll start iodine supplements.
I'll have my first midwife appointment at 9 weeks, so will probably ask again then.

MrsMJD, my doc was useless, I asked him about the iodine issue, and he had no idea about it! Just reminded me about folic acid. I'm planning on changing GPs at some stage!
Hmmm, maybe I'll do a bit of further research. Are there others starting iodine straight away too?

I decided to go the chemist and ask for it, and they gave me a months worth, so that'll take me through to when I see the midwife! Wasn't as expensive as I thought it'd be either, being over-the-counter, bonus!

I have a new box of Elevit which has it in it. The Iodine is 250mcg (as per the box). Not too sure what the recommended amount is but I'd say it would be similar to that.
Just be careful if you buy Elevit cos I think you can still get the old box without the Iodine.
ETA Just found this linky
