Topic: Bad early scan Posted: 08 December 2010 at 1:03pm |
I've just been for my 6 week scan that my specialist wanted me to have to "make sure everything is in the right place" and it didn't go so well! He was only able to see the gestational sac but nothing else. He said that it could just be too early and I have to come back next week for another one and have hcg bloods done in between but now I'm really worried
I'm so annoyed that I had such an early scan in the first place because I knew there was a chance of not being able to see a heartbeat but I hoped we would see something!
I was hoping someone might have a similar story with a happy ending to make me feel a bit better??

Big hugs LR!!! This happened to a good friend of mine and the same thing had happened - and she now has a 6 month old so definitely can be all good!!
I have been through the wait for another scan in a week, and know how hard it is - much worse than the TWW, so make sure you take care of yourself and vent as much as you need!!
I am sure it will just be too early and all will be fine, at 7 weeks you will see the feotal pole and the heat beat I am sure

Its very common not to see anything until around 6/12 - 7 weeks.
It could be that you arent as far along as you think.
I wouldnt be worried at all. Maybe book in another scan for 1 weeks time.
Was your scan an internal???

*hugs* dont panic yet hun!
Your only just 6 weeks, and it is possible you may be a teeny bit further behind than you think, also sometimes a heartbeat isnt seen until closer to 7 weeks.
If your hcgs are good then things are most likey going fine in there.

Thanks guys, I guess I just don't want to get my hopes up in case it's bad news. It didn't help that the specialist gave a 5 min speech afterwards about how common miscarriages are
SMS, yep it was an internal one.

My dr did this after he confirmed Ollie's pregnancy too! Why would you do that?!?!
FX that its just a little too early to see bub properly. All the best for your next scan.

Happened to me too. hey could only see the sac and told me I could be misscarrying but I knew I wasn't. I knew I was pregnant. I was right. I left my body to do it's own thing and had no hcg tests carried on with my morning sickness and went along to the 12wk scan to see the baby I knew was there
So fingers crossed for you it's just too early xo

LR, I think Anja had the EXACT same thing happen, was made to go for an early scan and saw a sac, a later scan showed bubs was there, just a little smaller than expected?
I had that with Jae too, went in too early and there was just a sac (internal scan), 10 days later went for a repeat and saw a teeny tiny blob measuring 3 days later than my dates (and thats with knowing my ov date, no room for error there!) with a heartbeat. This time I delayed going for a scan til 7 weeks as I knew any earlier would risk seeing just a sac and leave me worrying over what *might* be
There are a LOT of stories like this, majority with happy endings, dont worry about anything just yet, have they told you when to expect a repeat scan??

Thanks everyone, your comments make me feel a bit better, it is so hard not to worry!
BK, the next scan is scheduled for Tues so I should be 6 weeks 6 days. I had my first HCG BT today so will get that result tomorrow and then more on Fri and Mon to see if the levels are doubling.

I had the same thing with one of my pregnancies, and I got the whole MC speal too... but all was fine!! If the scan was transabdo it can be even more inaccurate from what I understand... I totally wouldn't worry if I was you (I know that is easier said than done) but I'd say you're just a bit early and as long as you have no bleeding or pain I would just assume all is good!

Geez LR just re-read your post above and you had your scan even earlier than my first one! And yeah my FS casually mentioned that "it might not be viable" which are the worst words to hear when this is all you've been hoping and wishing for for so long. FS can be so bloody insensitive sometimes, for saying stuff like that AND for making you have such an early scan in the first place!
I'm with Freckle, if you have no signs that anything is wrong then I would take that to mean all is well! HCG will confirm it but I'm sure it'll be going up as it should. Remember you had a lovely strong BFP too, that's got to mean hormone levels are way up there.
As I said elsewhere, thinking of you chick, it's a hard crash down to earth when you've been on cloud nine from just finding out you're finally UTD!

I wouldn't panic! It may just be too early yet. My mw even told me when I met her at 10 weeks that we may not hear anything!
They can be so insensitive - I agree!

Hey LittleRed - same thing happened with us (we had spotting and a bit of bleeding) our first scan was only the sac - then I spent ages googling (sp) it and kind of got a 50/50 result with half the people not seeing anything and the other half with a heartbeat.
BUT then went pack 7 days later and there it was a little flicker
SO fingers crossed and sending you sticky baby dust hope you next scan goes well. Please let us know, will be thinking of you
