Topic: Help for newbie. Posted: 09 January 2007 at 4:31pm |
Hello. My name is Shirena and I am a SAHM mom to my 13 month old daughter McKayla. We have only been in the country 3 months and still trying to figure stuff out.
How do playschools work? Have a visit on the 22nd with Plunket and will ask them but wondered if you guys can help me. I dont want to put her into a creche and just leave her. I want to take her to a group where I can meet other mommies, hopefully make new friends and she can play with other kids as well.
Thanks for the help and looking forward to chatting more here.

Hi Shirena and welcome to NZ! What you are looking for is a Playcentre and they generally are run with a lot of volunteer help by the mums/dads who attend. For example, you might offer to set out the morning tea a couple of times a week and/or help pack away the toys at the end of the day. Your Plunket visit will be helpful for letting you know where ones are that are close to your home (I live in Palmerston North).

There are also playgroups and you can go a few days a week. We go once a week to playgroup.
I think with playcentre you do leave them after a while, but with other mums.. never really looked into playcentres but I've heard that some of them are quite good.

depending on how involved you want to get you can go to music and movement type things and also playgroups. We have both here and Ive meet heaps of ladies this way. I know our play group is run by plunket volunteers and is at a local church hall, I think its the same with the music and movement, both are just gold coin donations and the kids love it. Im in christchurch but Im sure there are simaliar things up north.

Oh yes we have a music and movement type program down the road from us which the girls have been enjoying. That's gold coin donation. Some playcentres are subsidised (paid by the Government on your behalf) depending on your income, but I'm not sure how that will work for an immigrant sorry. I think you would have to contact Work and Income NZ for info on that.

We are from South Africa.
To answer the other question. It seems as hubby is doing the work to residence program and our initial stay is for longer than 2 years that we are covered the same way as anyone else as he is paying taxes. Same benefits ect.

Hi Sirena - As i said before im in botany. I will find the details for the group that meets (for size reasons) at the church beside the skating rink in botany...they are a mums group that has grown huge and one of girls in my antenatal class is involved and invited us along...I cant go til bubs is here cause it is during the day but will get you the details.
Otherwise keep an eye on the courier, howick and eastern times etc as they often have a full page of what is on and there are so many playgroups, coffee groups and activites for kids listed. Also check out the bulletin boards at the Lloyd elsmore pools, Howick and higland park shopping centres, the supermarkets etc...and also the libaries.
There are also so many south africans in eastern suburbs that there are groups set up for various things for them to involve kids etc. Maybe check out the sth african butcher etc and ask in there if they know of any groups, circulars etc???
You may need to attend a few to find a group you and your daughter both enjoy.

Well my daughter calls me mamma. Afrikaans for mommy. People use Mom or Mommy in english. Some kids even name their parents by the name.

Hi Shirena,
I live in Howick closer to Howick Village,
I up until the end of last year was co-cordinator of the All Saints Playgroup which is held at the Anglican Church in Howick.
The playgroup meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The Co-ordinators this year for the Tuesday group are Vicky ph 534 0480 and Elaine ph 533 0464
and the Thursday group is Ginnie who I will have to get you the number of.
It is a dollar per family.
The Tuesday group meets every Tuesday except over Janurary and the Thursday group meet for an outing on the second Tuesday of every month.
If I am looking after children as a Nanny from my own home I take them to this playgroup and also to a music and movement group in Ben Lomomd Crescent off Cascades Road in Pakurang.
At the Botany meet and greet you will meet my daughter Kelly and her daughter Caitlyn whom I look after as a Family educator through the Porse franchise in Howick and I am presnetly on the look out for a baby to look after here at home
My daughters name on this website is CaitlynsMyGirl
I think if I remember rightly Ginnies number is 534 9481 but will let you know definitley if you want to call me on 534 8895 or 021 187 3131.
