Topic: How to wean??? Posted: 01 December 2009 at 3:03pm |
I am having huge problems getting Jody to drink any kind of milk except breastmilk. I dropped the afternoon feed so she is only BFd twice a day, then she asks for it during the day so I offer her cow's milk, or todder formula, or milo and milk, but the second it gets near her mouth she shakes her head and pushes it away!! I know she is getting plenty of dairy through yogurt and cheese and milk on her porridge but I want to actually stop BFing altogether soon. I have also tried using her bottle, 2 types of sippy cups, a cup with a straw, my own glass or mug and even a beer bottle! (she is obsessed with beer bottles and always tries to drink from them). HELP!!

I don't bother with offering any other form of milk - it just won't be drunk. I have had success cutting back day feeds by offering favourite foods when she asks - "cake" (homemade muffins) or banana, then just as she's finished I offer her a water. It works for me. I'm not worried about her not drinking milk - she eats cheese and yoghurt.

She's happy to go without milk after I offer her cow's milk in the afternoon and I know she is getting enough from her morning/evening feeds plus cheese/yoghurt during the day. I'm just not really sure how to take the next step of dropping the evening feed.

Do you have a night time routine? Could you introduce a cuddle (facing away from you) while a story is read if you don't do that already?

I could give it a go, she would rather eat books than listen to me read them though. Are you thinking a good distraction may be needed then sneak some milk into her? Or miss the feed altogether?
She's not very cuddly really.

Lilly refuse to drink milk when I was trying to stop bfeeding. So I dropped the afternoon feed and give her milk in a cup or bottle or glass. If she had a drink then yeah, but if not then I didn't stress. It took six weeks for her to start drinking cows milk. I was then able to drop the last two feeds over about 2-3 weeks

Thanks mumzrule, that is exactly what I have been doing and yesterday she suddenly decided cow's milk is yum!! Hoorah!
Did you give Lilly a drink of milk to replace the other 2 feeds as you dropped them?

The only way either of mine would drink from a bottle early on was to have them facing away with their back to me on my lap. They are both happy to drink that way but lay them sideways like trying to BF and they wouldn't drink at all from a bottle.

Yep once Lilly was happily taking a bottle of milk I had no problems with dropping the last two feeds and replacing with milk in a bottle.

Weaning is so hard! It took me ages and I think it only really got going when she started to want to. It helps I think if you can get someone else to offer the formula or other milk? Because they can smell the breastmilk...And my doctor once told me to just refuse to BF, eventually she will get hungry and she is perfectly capable of accepting other milk, and she will. But always seemed a bit mean to me I couldnt do it! Others have though and it worked for them!

I managed to wean her about a week (?) ago I just kept offering her cows milk and then one evening she just grabbed it and skulled the lot! Now she happily has 2 sippy cups of warm milk a day
Now I just have to convince her to try toddler formula as we are going on a long flight next month and they don't let you take milk incase it's actually a bomb...

this is good to hear. so far the only way I can get James to drink milk is if its in Tom's sippy cup...he has the same cup (in a different colour) and if I put milk in that he sips and then puts it down...picks up Tom's and drinks heaps

I have weaned Lily off day feeds. I just refused her and whenever she started trying to get some I would take her to the kitchen and make up 50 - 100mls of toddler milk (talking her through it) in a bottle. Eventually she got the message. She doesn't drink a lot of it though but that's ok because she eats cheese and yoghurt. Night feeds have been another story I think for her it is a comfort thing so we will just persevere and she's only having a quick suck/cuddle before falling back asleep. Bad habits, my fault!!
