Topic: Staying in Bed Dramas Posted: 23 November 2009 at 8:21pm |
Liam has been in a single bed for 4 months now & we're still having "issues". Day sleeps are ok as I'm still using the safety sleep.
Every night without fail Liam climbs out of bed, usually before we've even left the room . He has now resorted to pulling clothes out of his drawers & putting them in his bed as his entertainment because there's nothing left in his room apart from his bed & drawers.
We have tried going in as soon as he gets up & putting him back to bed. This didn't work as the more we went in, the more excited he got. We've tried leaving him to it but he simply grizzles at the door & has very rarely given in & climbed in bed (which he can do). Sometimes he is still up 2 hours after we've put him to bed .
Does anyone else have any other suggestions we could try? It really is rather frustrating & it's not like he makes up for the lost sleep time by sleeping in... He goes to bed between 7.15-7.30 but maybe he's not tired then but I suspect he's just being cheeky because he can.

Yep I have one, sit next to his bed, don't look at him or speak to him. If he gets out, which he might not with you sitting right there (Spencer doesn't) then just put him back in but don't give any eye contact or say anything.
When Spencer is monkeying about I do this just long enough for him to lay down and snuggle in but not until he goes to sleep, I find he just needs to stay in bed long enough to calm down and then he will sleep. So we do stories and then I will sit there for a while if I think he is going to mess about or if I leave and he comes out then I put him back to bed and then sit there for a bit.
If your little one is really persistent I would stay until he falls asleep and then after a week of doing that I would slowly sit further and further away until you don't need to do it anymore or do what I do with Spencer and just leave once you think he has calmed down enough to then settle.
Good luck

*puts hand up*
Sam does this if he has had a daytime sleep, but will usually go to sleep pretty quickly around 7PM if he hasn't.
He has NOTHING in his bedroom anymore, except for his bed. We bought colourful plastic storage drawers from The Warehouse for his clothes because we could easily take them out of his room at night time.
The only thing he does now is repeatedly open the curtains, and then once it's dark he usually climbs into bed and goes to sleep eventually.
If I stay in his bedroom he is worse and would talk away for far too long if I did. If he isn't upset I just leave him to it, and if he grizzles I go in there and put him back to bed and sit with him until he calms down and then leave the room again.
I don't understand why they don't sleep in after staying up like that either! Sometimes Sam will muck around until 9:30-10PM and will still wake at 7AM and be full of beans!

Aww Sally - when Jimmy started this trick I just put him back in his cot and left him to it. He had a few good nights in his big bed, but with the long days I didn't want him grizzling for hours before it got dark.
Some advice I've read says to wait until they're closer to 3 years old before moving them into a bed , and if they play up too much put them back in the cot for a while then try again a few weeks later (so I'm trying the latter, and hoping he's ready for the big bed much sooner than later). Do you think this might help Liam to break the habit? After a while you could try leaving the side of the cot down, so it was more like a bed? Bit of a hassle though eh, if you've already moved the cot into Oliver's room?

Daniel did that. We just shut the door and left him to it. He got the hint and realised it was better just to stay in bed. he fell asleep on the floor a couple of times but realised it wasn't very comfy.

We had the same problem..nothing we tried worked.. even staying with him he just lay in bed till we left and leaving he would cry the house down and not sleep..so we decided to leave him for a little while longer...hope you find a good solution for you though!!

I'm watching this with interest. We have just moved our very headstrong little guy into a big boy bed as we need the cot.
The first night he finally crashed at 10.30pm after a gazillion put back to beds. He only went to sleep when DH went and lay with him. Last night he hadn't had a day nap (a whole other vent entirely) so he was asleep by 8.30 after a meltdown (bedtime is 7pm).
Our problem is that he can open the door and come out, which is what he will do repeatedly.....

We removed the door handle on that side to stop that, before doing that we jammed something under the door that we could easily rip out if we needed to get in there but it made it very hard for him to open the door

Lilly went from sleeping 8pm-8/9am at night and 1pm-3/4pm in the afternoon to - playing/talking till 9.30ish, getting up a couple of time during the night, thinking it was time to start the day at 6.30am and only sleep for about an hour in the afternoon.
We have ended up with a very tired grumpy girl.
We tie her door shut (otherwise its a game going in and out) and I do not let her out till 7.30 in the morning. Afternoon sleeps are starting to improve. Plunket have surggessed(sp?) going to the dr and getting some to help "relax" her at night. Has anyone else tried this??
We are also get her this sleeptrainer clock from moosebaby.co.nz for xmas so I'm hoping it may help our mornings
