    Posted: 16 November 2009 at 8:54pm
Thomas is spending his first night in a big bed tonight, he's broken his cot so I decided we'd get the single bed out. Now, he's been in his room for 3.5 hours screaming for most of it. I've been in a couple of times to comfort him (not every 2 seconds) and I'm not quite sure what to do. I'm not going to give in and get him out of bed for any length of time because he's going to think that screaming is going to get him out of being in there.
What do I do? I think he's actually asleep behind the door at the moment

You could go in and lay down with him til he goes to sleep ... he should be out pretty quickly once he calms down since hes been screaming for so long.

If hes alseep behind the door - move him to the bed.

Then talk up how clever he is now being a big boy sleeping in the big boy bed tomorrow.

We moved Jake at about 19/20 months - I kept him in his sleeping bag so it was harder to get out, and put a rolled up towel under the fitted sheet (cos he fell out the first night!). Hes not once got out of bed - still stays there and yells for us to get him up, even though he can get out of his sleeping bag - and walk in it if he wants to.

Good luck!!!

Unfortunatly, I dont fit on the bed with him :P he's one of these annoying kids that fights being asleep too.. i had him asleep quite a few times, but he'd just wake up real fast and get out and scream. I've tried the positive re-inforcement the whole time but urg.. I'll go see if i can open the door lol.

Lol I'd just let him cry himself to sleep TBH. Some kids just won't be helped, and they think its playtime if you go in there (well my boy's like that anyway).

They do get better, honest (says the mother who's son is currently banging at the door because he won't have a nap)

So how did the night go?
No words of advice as I've not been there yet but didn't want to just read and run.

Hang in there.

I'd just let him go for it too and go in every 10 mins and put him back in the bed and tell him its time to sleep.

Well, he slept from about 9pm-ish til 7am without getting up once. I'm pretty darned impressed! I wish he was still in his cot, but it's pretty much beyond repair.

Wow, that's a good sleep for in a new bed! I've got my fingers crossed that he settles a bit quicker tonight for you.
