    Posted: 08 November 2009 at 5:06pm
Hi there,

My due date is closer now. I'm a bit afraid of the labour and pains. I want to have a water birth because some friends recommended that it's easier and a pain less progress.

Has anybody here had a water birth before? or going to do it? Share some experience with me?

Oh, I live in central Auckland. Could you recommend some good water birth please?

Thanks

Lucy

I'm still pregnant but I'd like to have a water birth if its possible. But just because your friends recommended it, doesn't mean it will be right for you. I really enjoy being in water, and I often have a warm bath to ease pains and discomfort, so for me, I know that I enjoy water when I'm in pain and it usually relaxes me. That makes water a good choice for me I think.

Another thing I like about water, is if I decide its not working for me, all I have to do is get out. I think its wise to research all your options for pain releif and have an idea of which ones you do and don't want to use so that if you decide you need something else as well as or instead of water, you have an idea of what you could use.

I can't help with central auckland though. sorry.

I planned on using water as pain relief too, unfortunately I hated it when I was actually in labour and it seemed to make things more painful.

Auckland Hospital has birthing pools (although not in every room) and Birthcare has pools as well, im not sure how far along you are, but dont you have some idea of where you are going to give birth?

cant help with the auckland thing, but Ive had 2 home water births, Im a total water person though which is good seeing as we live by the beach . I found it helped so much with the pain, it was easy to move around because the water took all the weight off and my muscles werent sore and achy afterwards. I also found pushing not as hard cause I had gone all 'soft' down there if that makes sense. With my last baby the pool wasnt filled in time so I had her in the shower and that was just as awesome. I've also had a birth with no water and that was not for me at all. I agree explore all your options and if you decide waters not for you you can always get out. Good luck.

I didn't have a water birth, but spent a good deal of my labour in the birthing pool (in the hospital). I was open to the idea of actually having DD in the pool, but in the end it just didn't feel right (and turned out for the best seeing as the cord was wrapped around her neck a few times, and had to be cut before the rest of her came out - which would have been more difficult if I had remained in the water!).

I actually found that the water sped up my labour (as in went from 3cm to fully dilated in about 2.5 hours), so it was anything but painless for me! (I had some gas while in the pool, but that was it for pain relief). Having said that, I'm so glad I did spend a few hours in there, and next time will definitely do the same.

Just make sure you research your options, and be prepared that you might hate it once you're in there - so don't totally commit yourself to a water birth only, or you might be disappointed.

I'm hoping for a water birth with number 2 but also have a very good idea of all my pain relief options both medical and natural i.e massage, hypnobirthing, acupressure, etc.
When you're actually in labour some things work and some things (even things that you think would be great) totally don't so its good like previous posters have said to check out all your options.

Babybaby, I'm planning to have a waterbirth. The best thing would be to get a book about waterbirth. I have read a couple from the library. Definately helpful, and cover alot about when is a good time to go into the pool etc.

I had a waterbirth, and would do it again, I couldn't sit at all and so found squatting and leaning over the side of the pool the only 'comfy' (as could be!!) position.

I found the contractions to be really something else alright! you don't know where to put yourself, felt like hanging off the ceiling but once I started pushing I got into 'the zone' where I just blocked the pain out cos wanted to get bubs out NOW.

I had a unplanned water birth for DS, and am planning on doing it again this time round. I heard it was harder to push in the water, but I probaly need to work that out myself. I laboured a bit it the water too but it stopped my contractions alot and had to keep getting out to start them up again.

I had a wonderful home waterbirth.
I have to say it wasn't painless but it was a lot easier to manage the pain in the water & I was able to get into the positions I wanted a lot easier too.
Planning on having another home waterbirth with this baby too

Thanks a lot for the information.

I did a bit research and heard lots of other people's experience. Most are positive. I decide to give it a go. Like Andriea said, if it's not my thing, I can always get out. I might book in birthcare or Auckland hospital. Oh, It's 26th week now. I still have some time to go.

i had a water birth with ds2 and laboured but didnt birth in the water with ds1 as he was still posterior at 9cm.
i found the water helped control the pain i had with ds1 as it was all in my back. and the only thing that helped that was the shower nosill directly on my back.

ds2 was a rather quick birth so i wasnt in the water long and i was already high as a kite on gas so i dont know if it made any difference to the pain but i was deff able to get more comfertable in the water.

with ds3 i just didnt feel like getting in the water.
well i did want to but i was already comfy on the bed and once u get comfy u really dont want to move.

Can I ask a question to all you mums who had water births ......

What do you do with all the water and gross bits floating around in it, after the birth ?

Being a bit of clean freak, this is the only aspect of water birth that puts me off. I'm planning a home birth and will more than likely have a pool to help me in labour, I just can't get my head around the state of the water after the birth At the moment I'm preferring the thought of giving birth on makeshift 'birthing mat' made of an old shower curtain and towels, which I can just fold up and chuck into a bin bag after the birth

What did you all do after the birth?

The thing I like about the pool is the yucky stuff was sorta semi washed off. Apart from a bit of bloody stuff(TMI) which in the bath became very diluted it wasn't that bad.

I had a water birth with Emily and will have another one when we have #2. I found it great cant imagine being on a bed.
With the ick side once Emily was born and we had a cuddle she was passed to daddy and the mw helped me out of the pool i delivered the placenta on the bed about 40min later. So didnt sit in the blood for long. Also there wasnt really that much - Hubby thought it would look like a scene from Jaws lol even he aggrees it wasnt that bad.

I had a bit of blood but the pool seemed to dilute it & I pretty much got straight out of the pool.
Fed my daughter, had some photos then headed for the shower while the rest of the family had cuddles

I had a waterbirth with my first and there wasn't as much blood as I thought there would be, and the midwife took care of it all anyway... for my second I planned a home water birth (rather than hospital) but DD came so quickly DH didn't even get to finish filling the pool and she was born in our bedroom instead !!

same ..I thought I was the only one .
After I had Ty, the mw said that had I gone to the hospital and had only been 5 cms dilated , she would have got me to hop in the birthing pool, I was so relieved I didn't need it.

Thing to remember is,all women are different and cope with labour in different ways, what works for one lady might be completly the opposite for you, my main advice for a birthing plan , is to arm yourself with as much knowledge as you can about the process, then go with the flow .
