Topic: How much food? Posted: 11 February 2009 at 3:31pm |
Hi,
My little girl is 7 months old and I'm really unsure how much food to give her.
At the moment she is having 4 200ml bottles and 3 solid feeds a day. At each solid feed she i having about half a jar/can of baby food. After her lunch time feed she has a cry and I think she wants more food. So I'll give her a plain cracker or cheese. I just don't know where to stop, I don't want to be over feeding her, but on the other hand I don't want to be under feeding her. My next Plunket appointment is weeks away and I can't find any guidelines anywhere.
I know every child is different, but has anyone got any thoughts?
Thanks!

I didn't think you could overfeed a baby that young. From my understand a baby will only eat/drink as much as it needs. i would just follow your babies cue and keep offering her the food.
When Ella was that age she was having about the same amount of food (she is b/f through so can't help with the milk but she was drinking a lot as well).

I worked on the basis that as long as the mouth is open the keep feeding them. At that age my girls would eat on average 3/4 jar at lunch and dinner.
At that age it's not possible to over feed a bubs as they will let you know when they don't want anymore.

yep you can't overfeed babies - just keep going until she indicates she's had enough

Babies are really good at telling you when they are full, let her direct you. Sounds like you are doing really well though

Joel is eating about a can 3 times a day as well as at least 4 200ml bottles. I also offer cruskits and marmite slices (that I make) and he has fruit in a mesh bag. Today I caught my 2 yr old feeding him her pizza when I went to the bathroom

Sounds like you're doing just fine! Remember that you can go in to Plunket at any time for extra advice or a weigh, etc. But if her weight has recently gone up, that's not necessarily a bad thing either (fits and starts).

Thanks for all the advice guys, I'll give my little one more food at feeds now. It seems to be mainly the lunch time feed that she's more hungry.
She's growing up too fast!
Lisa, lol the pizza, what a hard case. How did the younger one take it?
