I've always been one of those mums who doesnt do cry-it-out or any other form of sleep training... but Its been 19 months of broken sleep and I cant cope anymore.
Isabella woke every hour up until she was 16 months. Now she wakes around 4/5 times a night.
Last night I started following the sleepsense book and it was harrowing. She cried for 2 hours and I couldnt take it anymore so went and rubbed her back until she dropped off
She woke 3 times and put herself back to sleep 2 of those times, the other I went and rubbed her back after 10 minutes of crying.
Is there anyone else doing this? How long does it take? I'm ending up feeling traumatised. God knows how she must feel.

a lot would depend on what she is waking for? if it is milk then a lot of people advocate giving water.. i know some have success with things like sleepig bags and those ones that are attached to sheets so they cant stand up... i myself would pref the back rubbing technique as opposed to letting her scream... have you checked out the sleep store, they give advice as well as sell stuff.

There's a sleep store? Where?
I gave her water instead of milk last night and she accepted it so thats one battle won. Tonight she went to sleep without so much as a moan... I am praying she stays asleep.

We had great success with Fay at 9 months with Sleep sense, but yep it is hard work, but pays dividens now that she is asleep by her self at 7 every night and sleeps through.
Can't offer much else in way of advice as we rocked her to sleep til 9 months and this is the only sleep programme we did. I chose it cos you don't actually leave her to it, just slowly withdraw, at least you do with babies fays age then, didn't read the toddler section so i might be wrong

Leah was sleeping great up until about a month ago............now we are at the nightmares and night terrors stage so she wakes up screaming and sobbing and the only way to settle her is for her too come in to us. (she was sleeping through from 7pm till after 7am)
Spoke to plunket yesterday while there with Joel and she said to do what ever works for us at the time, at least by coming in with us she feels secure and safe and will calm down and go back to sleep.
So at the end of my ramble, my point was that their sleep patterns keep changing so don't be surprised if something else happens down the track.

The Sleep Store is a NZ run website that is GREAT  . They sell all the 'sleep' stuff - sleeping bags, linen, night lights, white noise CDs etc but also have heaps of advice and articles for all ages from newborn right through. They also have great service and quick delivery too  .

 It is not something that I have had to go though but I hope you find something that works for you and for your beautiful wee girl.

Thanks for the link, I'm going to look now.
She slept through last night. I'm in shock! I can count the number of times she's ever done that on one hand.
We've tried things haphazardly because I'm a big sissy and cant stand her being upset. I'd love to have a second child but cant even think about it when we're still so sleep deprived so decided it was time to pick one thing and stick to it... sleepsense didnt seem too draconian.
Praying the next few nights go well too. How many nights does it take to break a habit?

We found with Fay that after a couple of nights she seemed to break her habits of 'needing' us to go to sleep and apart from the odd night (usually when she is brewing something) we have no problems. It's a great gift to teach your child to be self settling - to her and to you
good luck, you seem to have started to break the habits with her beginning to sleep through, but don't be surprised if she throws you a curved ball in a couple of nights, just stick to what you have been doing, otherwise all the hard work you have put in now (and tears and guilt - I know) will be in vain

Here is a link to advice on dealing with night wakings, from another great website that we've found really helpful. I hate the idea of leaving DS to cry, and found these alternative methods much more palatable .
Think I've read it takes 3 days (or nights in this case ) to break a habit for a baby, but can take longer, even a couple of weeks, in toddlers ... but depends on what type and how many issues there are to resolve.

Last night she went to sleep on her own without any problems... but woke every hour from 01h00 onward.
Hoping for a better night tonight!
