Topic: Luteal Phase Defect Posted: 12 October 2008 at 3:47pm |
Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone else out there is having trouble with Luteal Phase Defect. I have just worked out that this is what is happening with me as well as PCOS. I am currently waiting for my appt at the hospital and have been charting mad since Jan when we finally admitted to ourselves that it wasn't gonna happen naturally for us.
For those who don't know what a Luteal Phase Defect is, I will try to explain.
After the follicle on the ovary releases the egg the folicle becomes a Corpus Lupeum. During a normal menstrual cycle, the luteal phase will begin after ovulation and last until your period starts. It is during this time that the corpus luteum releases progesterone, getting the endometrial lining ready for implantation. However, women who are affected by LPD are either unable to produce enough progesterone during the luteal phase or the endometrium does not respond appropriately to the progesterone stimulation. The end result is that the endometrial lining is not sufficiently prepared for implantation. The way you tell is your luteal phase will be way to short. Apparently between 10-12 days is low and under 10 days is a LPD.
Since Jan my LP (letual phase) has been between 5 and 11 days. Mind you I have only ovulated 4 months out of 9 since then
I'm gonna use this post as a way to record my journey from now on. If anyone else wants to join in you are very welcome.

We're not currently TTC (or ever likely to be again!) but I have a borderline LP of 10 days on average. I conceived in a cycle where I ovulated really late (day 22 of a normally 26 day cycle) and miscarried so wonder if that might have been a LP/progesterone problem, but then we got pregnant again shortly after on day 16 of a normally 26 day cycle and carried to term (twins!).

Mine's pretty short it started at only 8 days and then I started taking vitex and it moved to 9 and then 10 days and then I added a vitamin B complex (with lots of B6) and it's moved to 11 days and stayed there (I stopped taking the vitex though as it didn't agree with me). I've read heaps about it being a problem but both the fertility specialist and the naturopath didn't think it was a biggie. I'm not completely sure I agree though....
Maybe try taking a vitamin B complex and see if that helps at all? I take the blackmores Mega B complex as it has 50mg of it.
I'm starting acupuncture next week so will let you know if that changes things or not, but as Maya says it didn't stop her conceiving.

What's VItex? I'm taking 50mg per day. Is that enough do you think.

mum799 - also try a herbal supplement called Maca. It helps support the endocrine system, which is responsible for hormone production and regulation.
It helped me with my lack of ovulation and to also helped my body produce the right levels of progesterone.
I didn't bother with vitex, as my nautropath told me that the Maca would do the trick, along with the other supplements I took (flaxseed oil, a multi-vitamin, and a iron supplement).

That's pretty low.
I was taking 1000mg a day, I think that's a pretty average amount but don't think they recommend anything higher

I also have luteal phase defect. No trouble getting pregnant but have now had 3 miscarriages. My phase is 8 days. I have heard B6 is good, but too much can be harmful so start with 50mg and increase by 50mg each cycle until you see a lengthening. I have also read that acupuncture can help but havent tried it yet. I was given progesterone tablets with my last preg but lost it anyway. Sorry not trying to be a bummer, just in the same boat and hoping to find something that will work.
Chelle please let us know if the acupuncture works!

Well, I'm back. My last cycle had no ovulation, I was pretty sad about that. This time though I O on day 11, this is weird for me. I am now in the count down. I have increased my progesterone cream to twice a day. All the other months I was using it once a day. I am taking B6 and Folic acid. Fingers crossed.

I am now 10dpo and I started spotting yesterday. I have had preg symptoms for about 4 days now but the tests are coming back a BFN. I don't know whether to give up the progesterone cream and let AF come or to keep using it until at least 14dpo and test again just to double check.
I really thought the double dose of progesterone cream and B6 would have got me further than 9dpo.
Here is a link to my chart ... http://www.fertilityfriend.com/ChartGallery/94852.html?u=1
Any Suggestions?

Try and keep going for a few more days, it might take another month or so to kick in? Sucks when this stuff doesn't work out doesn't it? I'm trying acupuncture at the moment so if that lengthens my LP I'll let you know.

Well the progesterone cream didn't stop AF from coming at 11dpo. It's really heavy and crampy. I can't help but have the feeling that it was another unsucsessful implantation. Not going to bother with meds this month, I'm sick of trying so hard. Is it stupid to mourn something that might of not even been there?
Maybe the new year will bring me my baby.
Much love and baby dust to those out there trying.
It sucks having fertility problems.
