Topic: Toddler Fracture Posted: 30 April 2008 at 1:30pm |
Okay, so Connor's leg is in a cast past his knee - has anyone else got experience with a 'toddler fracture'(that's what the doctor at Starship called it)

Daredevil Connor is right - you would think he did it one of the many times he launched from the couch that he had climbed onto to a moving brother - or perhaps one of the countless climbing expeditions that met an untimely end...but no, as far as we can guess, he most likely broke it while rolling over in bed and getting a foot stuck in the guard rail.

OMG poor boy - big hugs coming your way!!!
I've always been scared of my son doing the same thing re: getting foot/leg stuck in the bars of his cot, he often wakes up screaming with them twisted in bars ...now I'm going to be even MORE paranoid

Does he have it in a walking cast or is he non weight bearing? And is it actually broken or by toddler fracture does he mean greenstick fracture?

He's non weight bearing - he's in a plaster cast most of the way up his thigh. I think it's a spiral fracture of the tibia (is that like a greenstick?)

Ouch! Greenstick fractures are where the bone doesnt completely break through - one side fractures and the other side bends cos kids bones are more pliable than adults, if that makes sense. I wonder if thats what he meant by toddler fracture... How old is Connor now? Is he still in nappies? Got lots of DVDs?! Good luck, hope he's not in plaster too long.

Connor's 18 months - and he is the outgoing, domineering, short-tempered one. I think he's decided to try and out-do Andrew who used to hold the household record for adventure related injuries.
Andrew (almost 3) hasn't worked out that Connor isn't as fast or mobile with the cast on - he was on a fire engine ride on toy and went veering into Connor, knocking him on the nose. Connor then growled and lunged at Andrew, biting him on the thigh because he couldn't reach higher. At least time out was easy - I put Connor on the 'thinking mat' and he couldn't move away. Andrew's walking around the house talking about his Connor-dog-bite.
Ouch Aimee - that sounds really sore - and makes sense - the doctor said that the fracture would have only hurt if he put weight on his leg, so having it immobilised means that he should be pain free. Still in nappies - and have had a couple of near misses with the rumbly tummy contents trying to escape out the nappy and down the cast - ewwww.

Alyssa broke her leg (her 11yo sister dropped her)when she was about 4months old so luckily she wasn't moving much yet...but she still managed to kick the cast off 5 times in about 9 days, due to the shape of her leg. They actually didn't put another one on after that as she developed a pressure sore on her heel so it was doing more harm that good. They said that kids heel allot quicker than adults so she was fine.
I guess thats not much help whne your little one is 18mths and probably wanting to run around. Hope his cast isn't on too long and the poor we man doesn't get too bored.
