Topic: She wont eat meat!!! Posted: 07 January 2008 at 1:36pm |
My little girl is 21 months old and has stopped eating meat and eggs entirely. It's been a few weeks now and I'm beginning to worry about her protein/iron intake - although she still seems to have stacks more energy than her daddy and I can muster!!
I've tried all sorts of recipes and managed to get her to eat some lamb steak once it had been cut into fingers, marinated and crumbed but this only worked once, she turned her nose up at it the next time we tried.
Any suggestions?

She may not like the taste of meat. I know that kebakat is a vege and became vege about that age.

Yup I was the same when I was a toddler, mum said I just began to gag and throw it up.. been a vege ever since, though I still like eggs.
Just try and feed her other iron rich foods (spinach etc) and try meat every once in a while, she may decide she likes it later on rather than making her eat something and getting all sh*tty about.

My now 2.5 year old went through a phase of this for months and months and months and has only just started eating meat again. He does eat eggs though and lots of yoghurt and veges. I also got him some suppliment (incremin, yellow label with giraffe), as advised by plunket and he's fine. Personally, I would say don't make a battle out of it. Good luck!

oh yeah and I got him back onto meat by tempting him with lots of tom sauce and chicken nuggets. I would always dish it up, but tried not to make a big deal out of it if he wouldn't eat it, and made sure it wasn't "touching" anything else cos then he wouldn't eat that, either.

Also beans are a good source of iron, I mash up red kidney beans and use them in nachos, bolognaise etc nobody knows its not meat.
If its a longer term thing, I highly recommend Alison Holst's Meals without Meat cook book.

My 5yr old won't eat meat either...if we are lucky she'll eat a few strips of chicken. DH can on occasion get her to eat sausages, but has to cover it in tom sauce... if she had a choice she'd eat mashed pots every night....

Thanks for all your advice and suggestions.
As my husband and I have always relied on meat for those great minerals I've never had to cook full vege meals before. Will grab a copy of that cookbook (thanks fleury) and love the idea of mashing up kidney beans and I'll keep an eye out for the supplement.
Thanks heaps
Jo

I tried one last ditch effort to get her to eat meat last night, not because I'm stubborn (although I undoubtedly am) but because I had meat out anyway which had to be used.
My hubby suggested that I try and feed it to her separately (he thought it might be too daunting seeing a full plate) so I served up potatos and schnitzel with tom sauce first and had a plate full of veges waiting in the kitchen.
She gets quite excited at dinner time and had already climbed into her highchair ready and waiting but you should have seen her face when I put down this plate of meat and potatos with nothing else "what the F*** do you think that is mum". She composed herself pretty quickly though and ate all her potatos then proceeded to play with her water until I brought out the plate of veges.
So from tonight we are eating meat free. I'm off to the library today to see if they have the Alison Holst cookbook. On the bright side I will learn some new recipes, save money at the butcher and it probably won't hurt my waist line eating extra veges either.

My older two girls didn't really get into meat until they were almost 2, and still can be picky about it. I think it's just the texture so I dish small amounts regularly and just let them have what they want. My 3rd baby refused to eat any meal without meat in it from the time she was 6mos haha!

Jake will eat chicken on the bone, but not off. In fact, now that i think about it, any meat on the bone is okay, but any off is usualy discarded - ap[art from mince

Oh boy .. I have the same problem. I occasionally manage to get some ham, luncheon or cheerios into Amelia, but not often. Anything else is spat out - even if it's cut up tiny and disguised in sauce or vegs .. somehow the meat always gets discarded!
I still have her on formula and bought some Just Juice with added iron in it because of this problem. I'm just glad she's not the only one!!!

Week one without meat went well and I am thinking it's probably good for me too, especially since I'm off to CHCH for a wedding next week and want to look great in my dress so eating salads most nights will probably help.
We've decided to not even offer meat during the week (when it's just Michaela and I at home) and we'll put some on her plate every saturday and sunday.
She ignored the meat on saturday but on sunday we had roast chicken infused with beer (I'm thinking the alcohol probably burned off in the heat anyway) and she loved it, she ate all that was on her plate so we kept adding and in the end she must have eaten almost a whole side plate full of chicken as well as all her veges.
I'm not sure whether it will work as well for red meat (she's always loved roast chicken) but we'll see this weekend - hmmm, or maybe it was the alcohol (like mother like daughter??).

ps. I'm finding that preparing meat free meals is heaps easier and quicker (esp since it's too hot to cook the veg so we're just having a variety cut into finger food) and I have heaps less dishes - it's fantastic.

I also used to offer shaved ham, he liked that... and no prep, either!
