Topic: Night Terrors Posted: 10 November 2007 at 6:38pm |
Elle's been getting night terrors since 4mths old...she usually gets them within 2 hours of going to sleep at night and they usually consist of her roaring full on for a few minutes before returning to sleep.
Last night however she SCREAMED...a real scream...a big girl scream at midnight. I was totally freaked out and went into her as quickly as I could. She was clearly still asleep but was beside herself and eventually woke and was totally freaked out.
Does this sound like night terrors or nightmares? I've read nightmares can start around is age.
It was scary!

Alan has them alot and they started about that age. We often just leave him till he get's up on his own(couse he is older so in a bed). They are really scarey though even now I freak out when Alan has them. Mikey has had the odd one, but not as much or as often as Alan.
ETA to add sorry that does not really answer you queston.

It's freaky when they do that!! Mine has had the occasional one, more so when he's overheated or exhausted. Apparently the difference is: if they can remember it, it's a nightmare. If they can't remember it and/or don't seem to wake up, it's night terrors. You're better NOT to wake them up if it's terrors, just cuddle them until they calm down. So scary though, I feel so awful for my lil guy when he shrieks like that.

Hmm DH & I are beginning to wonder if Ollie is having nightmares, though it isn't as full on as some of your bubba's, so maybe just a bad dream?
At 4am this morning he started crying and it increased in volume and got more insistent. DH went in to check on him and he was standing in his cot. DH picked him up, thinking he must be awake and he started screaming. DH brought him back to our bed and it took a good 10-15 mins to calm him down and he promptly fell asleep again.
It wasn't until the light of day when we were discussing it that we clicked that he may have still been asleep when DH picked him up which probably scared him more than anything.

they can be scarey....I used to babysit a little girl who had them....
if she isnt awake = dont wake her. If she is cuddle her back to sleep or pat her down...often the appearance of being awake isnt real....
they do grow out of them but there is nothing more terrifying than a bubba screaming....Poor gabrielle and poor mummy and daddy!

We are very used to the night terrors and don't wake her but lately she has woken herself...the cry changes so we go in. The night in question was different though as it was a big girl scream, not a baby scream. Was very freaky. She has had night terrors since 4mths old :(

A good way to stop these terrors is to give bubs a few drops of Rescue Remedy at bedtime, we found this worked a treat, stopped them even starting. Real Rescue Remedy is quite expensive because they have patented the "name", so we found a friendy natural therapist at our local pharmacy who makes up bach flower essences (Rescue Remedy) then added "White Chestnut" to the mix, this makes it the same as the Rescue Remedy "Sleep" mix, much cheaper but just as effective.

Another thing to think about is food, if you were still feeding at 4months it could have been something you ate??
My daughter gets night terrors if she has chocolate, poor thing try a process of elimination, do a google and find out the most common causes for night terrors, i think orange juice can be another for some?
