Topic: Pox Parties?? Posted: 31 October 2011 at 11:53am |
A bit of a strange one I know lol
My friends kids have both just come down with the chicken pox. I'm 25 weeks pregnant, but I've had it as a kid so not worried there. We're wondering whether to take DD round and see if she catches it, so we can get it over and done with before baby number 2 comes. After talking to my friend, she says its much harder having 2 kids with chicken pox at the same time.
What do you think ladies? Should we join the pox party?

there is no guarantee they will get it even if you expose them to it. My kids were exposed many times and just got i out of the blue eventually. i had 2 with it at the same time, no worse than having one with it really.

I've heard of people doing it but I don't think I could bring my child somewhere to try and make them sick, no matter what reasoning was behind it. I'd just wait until they came to us

I think its a stupid idea for anyone to go out of their way to expose their child to that kind of illness. Just because most people don't have a serious reaction there are kids out there that do.

I would never intentionally exposure my kids to CP. In rare cases it can be quite serious and you never know if your child is going to be one of those cases.
CP has gone around DD daycare a couple of times (2nd time was when Tom was a newborn) and she didn't get it and I ended up getting the CP vac for her and will probably do the same for DS when he goes to Kindy.

I've never had chickenpox so you might be exposing them to a disease that they might never catch.

I would go. CP is one of those diseases that is good to get while you are young as the risk of major side affects are low compaired to if you are an adult. I would read up about it first on how to treat DD and be prepared, and she may not get it either as the other kids might be past the inffectious stage.

Chicken pox isn't contageous once the spots have appeared though is it? It incubates for approx 10 - 20 days and then they are contageous for 2 days before the spots appear or so i'm led to believe? Personally i'd be keen to get them to have it as soon as possible as it's usually very mild. Nowadays you can also get a vaccine though. So if they reach a certain age and haven't had it naturally i would consider getting them vaccinated personally.

they are still contagious till the last pox dries (not blistery any more) - i wouldnt purposly expose - just wait till it happens - as my doctor said to me (after both mine got chicken pox) that people can die from chicken pox!

Yep, they are contagious while the spots are blisters. I've decided against going, it's not so much her getting them because its bound to happen one day, it's just i'm getting very pregnant now lol! I'm already finding it harder to chase about after a very active toddler, an itchy one would likely be terrifying

More people die of car accidents - do you not drive JIC you're one who gets killed??? How many of you ACTUALLY know someone whos died of or had a really serious case of CP? Chicken pox is a minor childhood disease and its the scaremongering thats ridiculous.
I wouldn't go to a pox party when pregnant either troutpout simply because the idea of an itchy, grumpy child would be off-putting but when not pregnant I'd definitely do the pox party - I have in fact but it didn't work it was fun though!

Please don't... because it's a myth that you can't get chicken pox again. My 11 month old got it recently and despite having had it as a child, I got it again and I got a bad case, it was hideous, I would not wish it on anyone, especially not a pergnant woman. Chicken pox can be damaging to a pregnant person as well, I know its before 20 weeks and in the days after birth but I wouldn't want to take the risk.
Also when my son had it he was extremely miserable and it was very painful. For me it was extremely painful I even got it on the soles of my feet and couldn't walk.
So yeah, in my opinion it's not worth it. And there's no guaruntee you won't get it again and end up miserable or pass on the virus to someone else who will...

wriggly_jiggly if you get it again I think that means you can't become immune... or something like that anyway. Maybe you should go get your immunity checked out? Its a bloodtest and it'll give you the heads up if you're still susceptible (in which case even getting the vaccine won't help) and you can make sure to avoid it in future. I've been looking at the whole immune thing abit and I think I'm going to go see exactly what I am immune to and what I'm not (regardless of whether I've had something or been vaxed against it or even not had it at all as you can still have an immunity) because you're right - what is generally harmless in children can be devastating in adults and I'd rather know before my kids start getting stuff and bringing it home to me JIC theres something I'm not aware of

I'm glad you've decided against it, even if it may be seen a minor childhood illness. I would feel mean intentionally making my child sick. I'd personally just vaccinate against it if I was that worried.

I've definitely had it twice too, once at 8 and again at 17. At 17 I was extremely ill with it whereas at 8 I only remember playing outside because I couldn't go to school, so I can't have been that sick.

i'm glad you decided against it too. My DS1 had the bad case of chicken pox, 3 weeks, all infected and bleeding and huge. We were blessed he didn't get admitted to hoptial there were two on his eyelids that the doctors were worried his eyes would get infected. He was on antibotics but had a reaction, a rash so another set back.!
He was very very sick and it took ages to recover.
2 years later he still has the deep scaring, which i didn't think he would get as he wan't a kid that scratched. But it shows how bad chicken pox can be. The doctors have said the strain is changing and some children are getting it really bad.We are so thankful he was o.k. DS2 is haveing the vaccaine as I couldn't let him suffer teh was Ds1 did.
Also my friends daughter had a stroke from the chicken pox virus. this is rare but DOES happen.
Another friend had your dilemma a few weeks ago and decided against going to a pox party as well.

CP can make children very sick (or anyone for that matter), so Im also pleased you decided against it too.
Most children that get it will only have a mild to moderate dose of it but it can cause serious other health risks. Not a risk I'd be willing to take or make on behalf of my children!
My DS got CP at 5 months old and we had to go to the hospital. He still has scaring from it too!

I can't understand that someone would purposely try and get their child sick. Makes no sense to me whatsoever.

I think taking your child to a pox party is irresponsible.
Yes, chickenpox is usually a mild childhood illness that happens once, but it can be complicated by an accompanying bacterial infection (much more dangerous). And there are cases of people getting it more than once - I had it 4 times due to an immune deficiency and have been very badly scarred.
There are reasons people vaccinate against illnesses like this.

I just had chicken pox at my house for the last 4 weeks, My 5 year old got it first on day 7 of school for him, we thought it was bad until 2 weeks (later to the day) the 8 year old and 2 year old got it, both together (was not surprised that they got it) not sure where the 5 year old got it (somewhere we went in the holidays) the 2 year old got it the worst lots in the nappy area, 2 night of hardly any sleep so I told him to the Doctor and they were infected (every time in the night when he went wees, he would wake up and cry and not go back to sleep for a long time), surprising he has not been scratching.
