Topic: Holding hands Posted: 08 August 2011 at 7:08pm |
Do you have any tips for getting a 20 month old to hold your hand while out and about? She's a very independent little girl and is usually fine while we're out with staying nearby, however now with a newborn, I would rather she holds my hand, especially in carparks. But she flat out refuses to do it. I don't think she would understand a reward system either, eg if you hold my hand you can have such and such.
So any other tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hold her arm or get a harness. I also don't move until they are holding my hand happily.

We practice at home which has helped. I generally have the pram with me now as picking her up and carrying her is near impossible at the moment. Once baby arrives I'll look at one of those wrist bands or harnesses just for a little more security. That way if she lets go she's still attached. She'll still be expected to hold my hand in carparks etc

Bribery. I tell my 2 year old if she holds my hand all the way to the shop and back she gets a sticker when she gets home. Works a treat.

How about give the option of holding your hand or holding the handle on the push chair? DD1 has chosen to hold the push chair handle and its working great for us

I used a harness for a few months at that age. She got better at holding my hand but I did have trouble for ages with DD throwing tantys and running off in carparks. She was never bothered by it, just accepted that she had to wear it, then as she got better at holding my hand I gradually phased it out.

Ohhh don't get the wrist strap! They hate that worse than holding hands.

If I'm in a rush and she is being flat out naughty, I simply grab her arm, not roughly, just firmly - it's often only a few paces before she wants to hold my hand.
Otherwise though I simply don't move until she does, or at least holds the pram nicely - and if she does this I put her on the parked cars side, not the open side where they drive.
Oh and at about that age I sometimes used a harness - these are THE BEST - the kids don't even know they are wearing one, and feel like they just have a little backpack on. I used it all the time while we were on holiday; DD was 2 at the time and begged me to put it on.
This is just one example - we have a kitten one

You may be surprised about the reward system! We often bribe DD to hold our hands when out and about and it works a treat. I guess having a NB is a little tough but DD knows it's either hold our hand and walk nicely or she'll get carried or in the buggy. Neither of which she likes much when out and about.

DD has the choice of holding my hand or being carried....she opts for holding my hand 90% of the time and know has learnt that if she lets go she get picked up and carried which she doesn't like (to which I get told 'I old you hand now Mummy'

It's a hold my hand or be carried policy for us (they're 3.5 now but have done this since they could walk).
When I pick them up I chuck them under my arm like a rolled up rug IYKWIM so it's not a cuddly nice way to be carried.

Nicky,C would have understood bribery at that age,but Tyler wouldn't...I just hold firmly to his hand or use a harness, its a pain though holding onto to the baby at the same time
