Help! I'm not sure what is happening, my 14mo for the last few months has religiously woken up at 7am, then had a mid morning sleep (10-12) and a mid-afternoon sleep (2.30-4) and goes to bed about 7pm.

The last few days she has been waking up at 6am, needs her morning sleep by 10am, and sleeps till 11.30. Then starts getting grumpy and tired again about 2.30, but will not go to sleep. Yesterday i left her in her cot to settle, and after nearly 2 hours of screaming, let her get up again. And she is back in her cot screaming now, its doing my head in especially as I need a nap too these days.

She has always been a good self settler, and likes her sleep, so I really don't know what is going on. If she is dropping her second sleep, how do I get her to last through the afternoon? I can't stretch her morning sleep out any later as she loses the plot.

ETA: opps meant the afternoon sleep in the title - baby brain & sleep deprivation!

We went through this a month or so ago....my DD is only 12 months though. Morning sleep was good and long...but afternoon sleep was very hit and miss. I moved morning sleep later and later. Helped to actually go out and do something...and then sing lots in the car on the way home so she didn't fall asleep then!! We now have lunch around 11/ 11.30 and then sleep for a couple of hours after that.
Up at 630am - sleep middle of day - then to bed 630pm.

Transition time was a bit mucky, but now we are in the swing of one sleep a day I love it!!

I agree. I think that she is cutting out her morning sleep. Both of mine did this at about 12mths. My suggestion is to go for it.

Basically we bit the bullet and kept them awake until about 12 - 12:30. Started a wind down period about half an hour before bedtime with quiet time, change nappy and bottle and then into bed.

The scariest thing for me was "what if she has a really short nap". It was only one sleep in the day and what would I do at nighttime. Most days it worked out okay and if she did have a short nap then bedtime could always come forward a bit at night. It didn't seem to affect the time she woke in the morning to any big degree and the next day she seemed to have a better daytime nap.

Good luck. You are in to the next stage!

My DD did the exact same thing at 14mo.
Before then she would be awake at 730, first nap 930-1130, second nap 130-330, down for night at 7pm.
At first I thought maybe it was being in a new house (we had moved not long before which had stuffed up her settling at night) but once we changed to one day sleep, everything went back to normal. She now goes down at 1230-1pm and wakes at around 330. It does make for a long morning but try and fill it with activities so she doesnt get too irritable and she should get used to it after a while.

Hope she settles back down soon

We went to one sleep at 12 months as the afternoon sleep was a nightmare! I just moved the morning sleep later by 15 mins every 3 days and put DD to bed earlier at night. Didn't take long to get back to evening out.

Thank god i found this convo. I am having so many issues with afternoon sleeps. Big morning naps but absolutely refuses afternoon sleep. Shes only 12 months old and i thought it was too early to transition down to one nap. But alot of you are saying yours were this age when they went to one nap. So that so helpful thanks.
