Topic: Midwife in Dunedin/Mosgiel Posted: 16 January 2009 at 8:37pm |
Hi guys,
I was just wondering if anyone is able to recommend a midwife in the Dunedin or perhaps Mosgiel area. Have been searching on the internet and have found lots of names but hardly any info on what each midwife is actually all about and I really don't want to ring 50 different midwives to find out (not that I would know what to ask anyway as this is our first!). Don't have any family or friends down here with babies - so have no one to recommend any good ones.
At this stage all I know is that I will probably have a hospital birth and that I like the idea of pain relief!
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance!

I found it really hard too. I rang one who made me cry she was so rude!!! They should know how sensitive we are in the first 12 weeks ey. Ill find her name and PM you so you dont go to her!!! lol
And then another who I met- she was right into home births and no pain relief etc- didnt say anything bout it before the appt- like she was preaching to me or something!
It is a bit of a mission to find the right one- dont be afraid to meet a few then choose- youll know who not to go for.
BTW- there is a Dunedin thread in the mums meet up section- we prob gonna meet soon....

I use Jennie Crawshaw, she is awesome, she was great when Chloe was born so I had no question who to use the second time around. The other one I have heard recommended a lot is Sally McNeil.

Have also heard SO SO many great things about Sally McNeil from lots of people in my coffee group and also other friends. I rang her at six weeks pregnant and couldn't get in so call her quickly if you are interested. I won't recommend the one I had as wasn't that happy with her. I have also heard Prue Thompson is awesome.
Good luck.

My midwife is Rebecca Taylor, sh'es also great! But we both live in Port Chalmers, you may prefer someone a bit closer to Mosgiel if that's where you live. Trying to remember the name of another midwife a work friend is using, who she recommends. Not coming to me right now.
Good luck, if you're keen to meet up with some of us, maybe in February, check out the Dunedin Mums thread under "Mums Meet Up" section.

Awesome! Thanks so much for all your suggestions!
I will try to ring Sally McNeill, Prue Thompson and a few others tomorrow. Might not have much luck though as it seems everyone else is great at getting onto phoning a midwife very early - I don't have a clue! (plus I feel like doing absolutely nothing these days) lol.
But hope I don't end up with someone not so great.
Cheers guys

Well I rang Sally McNeill first but she wasn't in - so I just left a message with her. Then I rang Prue Thompson and have arranged to meet her next Monday.
Do you think I need to ring and arrange to meet some more?
The thing is I just have absolutely no idea what the definition of a good midwife is, and Prue Thompson has had a lot of recommendations from people on this site so am thinking it could be safe if I just go with her? But if after the meeting I find that I didn't like her afterall - then I will be even further behind in finding a midwife. Lol.

LOL!!! I was just finishing an appt with her at about 12 ish- Itd be hilarious if you were the one who rang!!!!!!!
Dont worry- she wont assume you have chosen her to be your Lead Maternity Carere until you say so... I was worried about that too. They are all used to the first meeting stuff.
Just talk to her about what you want... see how she responds, see if you click with her, (any mw u meet that is)... youll know if she is the one.
Eg- Say how you feel about pain relief, or whether you want a specific birth eg home birth, or want to birth in a helicopter, or on top of a mountain etc etc etc
Or just tell her you have no idea about the process, or what you want or dont, as this is your first time, let her do the talking- thats what I did. (actually I think I burst into tears cos I felt so awful at the time!) Itll work out.
Prue isnt staunchly swayed in a particular direction like some midwives... esp home birth midwives..... some can get quite anti hospitals etc (not all, just some) And its a personal thing- no right or wrong, its about you, and what you want.
I know it sux having to organise things at this stage- its when u feel the worst.

Hi
If you haven't found a midwife yet - try Albany Midwives (I had Elizabeth), I struggled at first with her but I can't say enough about her, I had a few problems during my pregnancy and she was great - and during my labour she didn't muck around and due to my high bp after the birth she was great as well - even managed to pull a few strings and I ended up being in a single room after bubs birth which was nice. After care again and she went beyond the call of duty and was there for us.

I used a lovely midwife for my labour, Lisa Wang. PM me if you need her details. She is very professional, very gentle and just lovely. I only met her the day before my induction and to be honest, I dont think I would have enoyed my labour as much if it hadnt been for her.

Oops sorry I have been slack not updating how I am getting on with a midwife.
Well, i met Prue Thompson just yesterday and she seemed very nice even though I was a bit clueless and didn't have a whole lot of questions haha. And so we decided to go with her :) Was very easy in the end thanks very much to you guys! Really really appreciate it!
Also I have since had a dating scan (as there was a cancellation at the hospital) and saw the little blob and heartbeat which is pretty cool. :) All seems to be getting a bit more "real". Lol.
Thank you for all your help!

Hey looks like you have it sorted but Mary Ritchie is a stunning midwife. She was awesome - especially at the birth and after care. One thing we did that was great was have a student midwife in on the whole thing. they are fabulous because they provide a fresh eye and extra support. they are also really keen and listen to everything as they want to learn. We had Lucy Griffiths and she was amazing - especially at the birth as my midwife wasn't able to be there for the whole thing (she had an induction next door)

Hiya, I am also looking for a midwife in the Dunedin or Mosgiel area. Can anyone recommend a good midwife. I also have been searching on the internet and finding it hard to know which ones to ring or what to ask to know if they will be any good.
So if anyone could recommend any good ones that would be great
Thanks Amelia :)

As you can see by my ticker we have had bubs now. (I was about 8 weeks along when I started this thread.)
Prue Thompson was awesome. Very funny and made me feel at ease throughout my pregnancy and after Jude was born as well. Highly recommend her!
Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy!
