I have been on a gluten free diet for eight months after being ill last year. Now that I am nearly three months pregnant a friend suggested that i try introducing gluten into my diet again, as she had found she could tolerate lactose when she was pregnant.
Has anyone else found this when they pregnant?
Any advise would be helpful.

From waht I understand, if your Coeliac (cant eat gluten) then thats genetic rather than an allergy (which im sure your dietican would have explained to you?), so its not something that will go away over time (like an allergy can) its for life (and your kids will probably have it too)
So I would say that if you are Coeliac then no, you still cant have gluten while pregnant.

Not necessarily - they may or may not carry the gene, and then they may or may not develop Coeliacs. Having the gene doesn't mean you will develop it.
Back to the OP, I'm not sure. Why did you go off it in the first place? People do sometimes experience digestive things differently in PG, but I don't think you'll find a definitive answer - if you want to try it, then maybe do it in very small amounts. And be aware that it may be temporary so you may need to go back to being GF after the baby is born. Although realising you were still intolerent while dealing with a newborn ..... depending on your symptoms, it may not be that fun.

Oh ok, sorry, that wasnt specified in your OP.
In that case I would do as Fire engine suggested, if you want to try it then introduce it slowly, but I guess its pretty hit and miss as to whether or not you will be able to tolerate it...
And your right, I should have said 'could'. I have a friend whos niece is on the extreme end of Coeliac, and no one in her family knew, since then theyve tested the whole family (parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles etc) and all but one have come back with having the gene. My friend who hadnt had any symptoms of having CD now has bowel cancer (which is highly likely as a result of having gluten all those years), so I guess Im in the over cautious camp now

If you're gluten intolerance was diagnosed by a medical professional (like doctor or dietician) then it would be a good idea to discuss it with them before changing your diet while pregnant as they would be able to give you some good advice, and whether to do it or not.
Personally I wouldn't reintroduce gluten while pregnant as you're body is going through enough changes without throwing something into the mix, especially if you are still gluten intolerant. And like Fire_engine said, even if things change while pregnant finding yourself gluten intolerant again with a newborn will be difficult.

I am both gluten & dairy intolerant (diagnosed by gastroenterologist and dietian). last pregnancy I was able to tolerate small amounts of gluten and not dairy, and was able to tolerate gluten until approx 3 months after the birth. This pregnancy, I can't tolerate gluten at all, but can tolerate dairy. The body does strange things while pregnant :-)

thanks squoggs that is really helpful. my doctor and midwife have had no advice on being gluten free and its never been suggested to me to see a dietitian. i have had to work out everything on my own. i guess i will start trying a few simple things like sandwiches first and see how it goes.

the reason why people who are intolerant or Non IgE allergic can tolerate what usually affects them in pregnancy is because their immune system is low and there for does not "fight" what they are intolerant too.
I'm not saying this will happen to you but as a word of caution this is my story. When pregnant with #1 I discovered in the 3rd tri that I could eat dairy with no affects...YIPPEE I thought so I hogged out on it, she is very mildly intolerant. So with #2 I trialled this right at the start YIPEE no reactions. So I ate it all my pregnancy & loved it...but the 2nd child is dairy, wheat, soy & a couple of other things else intolerant. Now was this genetic, probably, or was it cause I ate lots of dairy & wheat? Not sure...will I do the same when I get preg with #3...No way, not going to risk it.
I would really err on the side of caution and if you were going to trial it, leave it til later on.
I was not aware that the reason I could tolerate stuff was until it was pointed out on here of all places that it's cause of your immune system. I would definitely see a dietitian before you do anything.

It seems to depend on the cause of the intolerance a little and the severity. Everyone is different, do what you feel comfortable with but I would be extra cautious about adding gluten to your diet again while pregnant.
I have a friend who couldn't have dairy after having gastro but can now tolerate small amounts of dairy. She isn't pregnant though it seems to have just gotten better over time.
I have slight problems with gluten and find that it depends on how much I have over time and also what it is in, I find white bread is one of the worst for setting me off. Since being pregnant though I find I have craved things with gluten in them so I tend to let myself eat them but still stick to the gluten free alternative for everything else, even in doing this I have had a day of feeling sick from the gluten but have also been sick by not letting myself eat what I was craving. No idea how any of this is affecting baby but they are pretty resilient, am thinking of asking my midwife for a referral to a dietician to find out what someone who specialises in this kind of thing thinks.

Hi Eassa, I agree a lot with what possem says. Everyone is different. I was diagnosed with IBS by a gastro specialist (frankly a waste of time)who really couldn't suggest anything helpful, so at that stage I was desperate and tried a naturopath, within 3 days of her advice and going gluten and dairy free I was sleeping thru the night, no stomach issues at all. Over the next 3 months slowly introduced some things back. Over the next 10yrs I have had setbacks but now pretty much know my tolerances. I think of it as a point system over the course of a day and if the points add up to too much of something then I suffer, and stress was major prob, used to go straight to my stomach.
After getting PG 3yrs ago I too discovered that I could eat anything, it was liberating! and that never went away. It makes sense about the low immune system thing that it wouldn' trigger any defense mechanisms, but after DD was born not sure why it has kept up but it has been great. I consulted a naturopath for all my vitamins etc whilst pregnant and thru the 1st months, don't know if that boosted my immune system plus BF, all a guess really.
All I know is if I was running low immunewise it certainly triggered an "attack". The first 5-6 wks of this PG I suffered badly from indigestion, bloating etc etc, and really wasn't taking any proper naturopathic vitamins. But it stopped and so far no probs with intolerances, but in saying that I haven't drunk milk in all these years and I still stay away from cream, and yes white bread is another no go.

there is lots of advice here however you have to do what you feel comfortable with
personally I have been craving milk whilst pregnant (have been lactose intolerant my whole life) so a couple of times have given into my craving - really really regretted it each time

Hi ya i am both gluten & dairy intolerant as well, if a doc said not to eat gluten cause of health reason i would say dont eat it, i know when i eat it i get very very ill, it feels like a very very bad flu to a rash all over my body to a very very bad tummy. So i guess it depends how intolerant you are and how sick you are willing to feel to have it. However my dairy is not as bad as my gluten i can eat a little bit of cheese and baked (gluten free) good with milk but i can not drink milk or eat to much dairy such as a big block of chocolate lol. You know you body better than anyone else, there is alot of yummy gluten free food out there and same with dairy just takes a little bit more work. It is hard when you crave some thing tho, i have wanted cheese and just eat one little bit a week hahaha but only cause i already feel sick all the time and bloated, well very bloated i try to avoid the food i have been told not to eat, My doc did the test for me (gluten and dairy) then i saw a dietitian, read alot of books and got to know caffee in Wellington better.
