Topic: holiday with new born Posted: 22 June 2011 at 4:39pm |
okay so DH and I work 7 days a week. Every easter we get 4 days for just the 2 of us. However next easter we will have a 6 week old as well.
Now last easter we went to Rarotonga for 5 days. Hubby is a bit upset that we won't be able to do something simular next year.
Does anyone have ideas or experience traveling with a new born?

I wouldn't do it personally. Those first 6 weeks, strike that, 12 weeks are challenging. It wouldn't be an enjoyable or relaxing holiday with a baby that young. I'd rather just be enjoying the opportunity to nap while hubby can help out. And there is the issue of exposing your wee new person to a new germy environment - first the plane, then a new country.
Maybe I am wussy though? Interested to hear other's opinions.

From my view it is the best time to travel as baby is still so unaware of his or her surrounding. We will be doing a big road trip when this baby is only a few weeks old.
So yes you can definately do it. It does take a little extra work but it is worth it and what a lovely way to bond as a new family.

my sister came over for a visit from Australia to here each time with her boys when they were about 6 weeks old - it can be a pain (depending on the baby) - the biggest issue she had was getting the right photo for the passport and getting all the paperwork done in time - also for her first trip with a baby she had had a c-section and was still experiencing some discomfort as the scar was uncomfortable

I considered it, and I'm glad we didn't. I think JessDub is spot on that they're probably at their easiest to travel with at that age, but when I was new to the whole parenting thing anything like that would have been a challenge that was quite possible but probably not at all enjoyable. So if it was a trip to see a dying grandmother I'd say it would be worth it; a overseas holiday would have been more stress than a break for us.

Hey, it is definitely doable. I went to Melbourne for a wedding when DD was 6wks old. DH didn't come although I did have my mum there to help out and we had a great time! At 6wks she just ate and slept pretty much so it wasn't too hard, and I was used to the sleepless nights by then anyway the wedding was only 3wks after my EDD but luckily DD came 3wks early, I wouldn't have wanted to travel any earlier than 6wks! Wasn't a relaxing trip lol but we still got to see some sights and had fun regardless

I say go for it! We took DD camping (in a tent!) for two weeks when she was just 8 weeks old and it was no worries at all I know camping is not travelling overseas, but its being away from home none the less with a newborn. It was stress free, relaxing and was a great opportunity to really bond as a new family without the everyday normal issues, particularly if your DH works long hours like mine.
Infact it was easier to take her on holiday back then than it is now!

I personally wouldn't. If you have a good labour/delivery then it might be doable. But at that stage, I was only just starting to feel good. I was sore down below for a long time. And only just felt like I was coping with broken nights sleep etc.
Could you book a holiday within NZ using the last minute hotel deals etc. So you could book it if you feel up to it, but if your not. Your not loosing any money.
Is your DH having time off after baby is born?

I personally wouldn't do it as especially as this is your first you don't know how you will feel after baby arrive I just had my 3rd 4 months ago and I wouldn't have wanted the hassle of going away as I don't think I would have found it a break and I also had all manor of problems with feeding ect and like I said that was my 3rd ...That said it doesn't mean you would feel this way so it might be worth getting a passport done once baby arrives but I would hold off and book something last minute as it is a very unpredictable time

I think it probably depends on what sort of person you are IYKWIM, I personally would not do it for the same reasons the others have said. I do think its a little sad that your husband has said he is upset you won't get to do it next year, he should be excited as you have a baby on the way and its going to be life changing no overseas holiday will ever be the same again!!!!!!! and look forward to going on holiday the following year, how much fun will it be with a 1 year old

No way would I be travelling with a baby that young. I would find that really stressful. We did our first big trip when DS was 4 months and that was hard enough. It's just not that fun travelling with a small baby - you're exhausted from the sleepless nights, you have to drag around heaps of stuff, you're breastfeeding all the time, baby's sleeping most of the time. They're too young to have their vaccines at that age and very vulnerable to disease and infection, so I'd be worried about travel - bugs spread badly on planes & even just having a baby with a cold is a real pain. I don't mean to be negative or scare you, but you also don't know how your birth is going to go - bubs could be a couple of weeks later than your due date, you could be recovering from a caesarian ... you just don't know. Maybe a long weekend away somewhere close to home would be better?

Yip, I'm the same here - wouldn't do it myself. Around 6wks was when we finally sorted out our BF issues and I started to feel ok down there (sort of ). The last thing I would've wanted to do was pack up all the stuff I thought I might need for a newborn (and all my sanitary needs) while on holiday, get to the airport and go somewhere.
And as others have said - the baby could come early, or late...you might only have a 4wk old at Easter next year!
They do just sleep and eat a lot at that age though, but then that's probably all you'll really want to be doing too.
You might find that once the baby is here that your usual overseas holiday pales into insignificance once you see what the 2 of you have created...many hours can be spent lying together watching your baby sleep...
Also - I'm guessing that you won't be working 7 days a week for the whole pregnancy...maybe a compromise could be DH taking some time off work before the baby comes and you could go overseas together then?

Appreciate everyones advice. This is my third and I have to say I always recover really fast and was ultra relaxed with both boys. DH and myself are very laid back people. Go at the drop of a hat with the kids, buy what we need there sort of thing.
Have found out a passport takes 3 days so might play things by ear. We run our own business and live on site so even at home work is still there. So to speak.

I think its different if its your 3rd baby. Sorry I was thinking this was your first. You know what its like with a newborn, so if you think you'll be up to it. Then go for it!

Being a first timer I wouldn't have done it (we didn't), 2nd time round I might consider it but depends how far. If leaving the country I wouldn't.

I went away for a weekend with DS when he was 5 weeks old, problem is what if you're like 2 weeks overdue, then you have a one month old and thats even worse (or better, depending on your baby). Its doable but i wouldnt book non-refundable hotels or anything.

Sorry, I totally assumed this was your first baby! I guess if you recover quickly and you're up for the holiday then go for it! Might be nice to have some time away just you, DH and the new baby...

I'd totally do it given the opportunity. With my two I recovered pretty fast and was wanting to be about and doing stuff not long after. I think I surprised my midwife by being late back to two in-home appointments (I felt really bad about it, she was waiting for me at my empty house ) because we had been away treating DP's parental leave as "time off" (and had been away for a couple of days) rather than recovery time.

I'm worried about a similar situation. I am in the wedding party for my besties wedding... 4 weeks after due date. Eeeeeek! I am hoping baby arrives on time. I have to fly to the other end of the country for it and it is our first bubs. Advice about travelling with a new born welcome
