Hi ladies

I have invested in a heart rate monitor today so I can still go go spin class etc and exercise in my heart rate zone...but I have no idea about heart rate and what rate its safe to be exercising in during pregnancy?

Prior to getting pregnant I was extremely fit, ran a half marathon and cycled half of lake Taupo, in saying that though I broke my ankle the day I found out I was pregnant so I did hardly anything during the first trimester, am just getting back into it now, so probably have had 11 weeks off proper cardio

Thanks ladies

Hi Kye, I used to work as a personal trainer and your heart rate when exercising during pregnancy should always been 140bpm or under. This is because the baby can't dissapate heat, so if you get hot the baby gets hot and has no way to cool down, which has the potential to cause problems.

I foiund with my heart rate monitor that it picked up on the heartrate of the baby or the placenta pumping or something strange as it would register about 164bpm while I was calm. So watch out for that too.
I was told 150bpm was the max while pregnant.

I am fairly certain the 140bpm heart rate thing is an old recommendation. These days they just say to stay well hydrated and activity at the level your body is used to is fine, just don't do something new or more intense than you are used to.

The situation you describe with having to return to exercise after injury is a bit different, but I think you should prob check with your midwife/doctor, but I'd say build up slowly to your previous level (or to what you are comfortable with)

thanks ladies, I asked my personal trainer today, she said 220-age=max heart rate and to work out at no more than 75% of your maximum which actually works out to be 141 for me

That actually seems quite high to me (75% of your max) .. but then again, she knows you personally. Not that I dont know you, but ykwim.

Just remember, if you are hot .. the baby is hot and although you can cool down during your workout by using a fan or aircon, the baby cant. So just use common sense :) xx

Thanks LF, so what do you recon would be a safe HR to work to? 75% for me was 141bpm, I get hot pretty easily, what did you do when you were pregnant? in the way of your limits?
