Topic: Bedtime Troubles Posted: 14 January 2011 at 8:06pm |
Hi all,
My 2 year old is starting to refuse bed at 7pm, she will usually go back to sleep after 8pm.
I don't want to keep her up that late but is it normal for them to start staying up later?
This has only happened in the past week or two and she is waking up at 6-6.30am. She is being toilet trained aswell.
Any help out there for me??

Personally I would keep with the 7pm bedtime. Ellas 3.5 and still goes to bed at 7. She did go through a stage a year or so ago when she used to chatter away to herself for 1/2-1hr but it eventually passed.
Could it also be the heat is affecting her? Its normally still quite hot at 7- if you don't already maybe trying having a fan in her room?

She does sleep during the day, just the 1 afternoon sleep from 12.30 to 2.30 but I am cutting it down today to see if that makes a difference.

I don't have any help but I just wanted to say you are not alone! G is taking approx 2 hours plus to get to sleep at night and she goes to bed at 7pm as well. I tried dropping the day sleep but that didn't make any difference. Fingers crossed for a solution!

Taylah is doing it too. She is taking ages to go to sleep. Luckily she plays quietly so i just leave her. But she wakes up early and is still tired and grumpy.
She still has a day nap, but there is no way im cutting that down while she is still doing it
I think daylight savings and the heat doesnt help either.

You arent alone... My DD is doing the same thing at 21months. she sleeps for 2 hours during the day and then i put her to bed at 7pm. she will yell out and carry on for about 1 hour. there is no way that i am cutting out her daytime nap/quiet time just yet!!!!
Fingers crossed that it is a short phase

My DD started to do the same, I found with her cutting back her day sleep helped, but it did take about 3-4 days to have any effect... She did eventually go back to sleeping well at 7pm, it took a bit of effort but there was no way I was letting her bedtime get any later

Having the same issues with my 20mth old for over a week. DS is exhausted so needs to be asleep, but the whole process is taking at least an hour of screaming and wanting to sit on my knee.
Last night however I put a story on repeat on the CD player and he was out within 10 minutes.... I think he wasn't liking being alone.... Hopefully this is the cure and not a fluke ....I'll be trying it again tonight!

Same here... cutting the nap only shortens teh screaming bed time sessions by half an hour so i will take my 2 hour peace during the day!
I think Jake is a) lonely b) delayed reaction to baby c) enjoys torturing me
Only one night waking last night woohoo!

We are having the same problems and I have cut the nap.
J now goes down for 1hr from 12.30-1.30 and then bedtime is 7-7.30.
We have gone back to 7-7, which is a vast improvment from screaming for close to an hour, and 5.30-6am wake ups. His behaviour is also heaps better during the day.
He is at daycare 3 days a week and they won't wake him so he will sleep 1.5-2hrs and on those days we are back to the bedtime dramas, late nights and early mornings.

Novmum that is interesting that it took a few days to take effect. I'm having issues with DS (he's two and a half). Bedtime is 7pm (and I'm definitely not interested in making it later!) but it can be up to two hours before he goes to sleep and some nights he is in and out of bed like a yo-yo.
I might try harder to drop the day sleep and see if a few days without it makes a difference.
I guess at least we all know we're in the same boat!!

Im still having troubles with her sleeping.
I can understand at the moment it will be hard since its so hot, even I am not going to bed till after 11 and its still too hot to sleep.
She went to bed tonight, tired as, she only had 1 1/2 hour sleep this afternoon and she is crying already

Have you tried sitting with her until she nods off??
I have decided to just to this when i need to, its normally day naps.
I find it less stressful to spend 10-30min getting her to sleep than listening to crying and fighting her to sleep for hours
Although i refuse to do this and doubt it would help but have you tried to cut the day nap?

I am still having the same troubles with Gabrielle Natalie. She is going to bed at 7pm and is usually still awake at 8.30/9pm or later. I tried the sitting with her and she doesn't fall asleep, she just lays there with her eyes closed till I get up and walk away and then she sits up and cries. Anyone got any other ideas?

Yep us too. If he has a nap he falls asleep at 7 but then normally will wake up anytime between 9.30-11pm and take a good 2 hours to resettle cos he just thinks it's time to get up, if he does have a nap then instead we get a two hour battle at 7pm instead. I wouldn't mind but no matter how late he either goes to bed or how late he is up in the night he still wakes up around 6ish each morning and never any later than 6.30am and that's a real killer.
No idea how to help at all though, we never had this with the eldest he would just go to bed and chat for a while till he fell asleep or I could sit and read to him for a bit if he was hyped up and needed help settling.
Shelt if I sit in with K he still just carries on, his is just full on tanties cos he doesn't want to go to bed.

I have tried dropping the day sleep (well taking advantages of days when for one reason or another it deosnt happen) and he is dog tired abotu 5pm bu then gets a second wind.
If I put him down for an early nap (10.30-11ish) he's still a nightmare,
I dont know what to do eitehr as he wakes at 5.30!! This is just not enough sleep for a little guy. If left to his own devices he would sleep for 3 hours during the day so he must be tired! IT has been hot so maybe thats the reason. Bring on the end of daylight savings I say! Whoever lengthened it, didnt have little kids. End of March is too far away.. I know I am over it by then.
