    Posted: 20 October 2010 at 12:55pm
Just wondering if anyone is using a cariboo bassinet and if so are they going to (or currently) using the standard mattress that came with it, or a wool / hemp mattress. I am torn as to whether I need to buy the wool mattress or stick with the one that it came with?!

We had the cariboo wool mattress pad that cost extra for our bassinet and it is actually very thin. I think that using a foam one is fine as they generally aren't in the bassinet for that long.

Ohh I didn't know you could get wool mattresses! We got ours off TM so am about to get a new mattress for it, but have only seen the foam ones. Where do you get the wool ones from?

We got our wool mattress direct from Cariboo, however I've just checked there website and it's not listed, but you could try emailing them.

The Sleep Store sell a wool mix mattress that fits the bassinet but is a different brand.

We just used the one that came with it. It was fine, and we'll be using it again for the next baby

We used the foam one (well i got the bassinet off trade me but bought a new foam mattress for it)

i will probably get a new foam mattress for this baby - dont think they were that expensive.

i think the foam one was fine - DD didn't complain anyway!

I borrowed the bassinet off a friend so put a new mattress in it, thought a foam mattress was pretty expensive for what it was and so for not much more brought the wool one off The Sleep Store.

http://www.thesleepstore.co.nz/shop/Baby+Furniture/Cot+%26+bassinet+mattresses/Innature+Wool+Bassinet+Mattress+40+x+76cm.html

Oh, and cos this bassinett is slighly bigger than a standard one, my little girl was in it until 3 months.

if you are wanting the wool for the warmth, you could try folding a wool blanket you already have (if you have one) and placing that under a base sheet?

a merino wrap would work great because that would still be quite thin and not bulk it up.

I've just got the standard foam mattress. And they're pretty stiff which is good, so I just wrapped a wool blanket round it and then placed sheet over. A wool mattress now

I bought the wool mattress from the Sleep Store, just because I prefer natural fibres. I thought it was pretty reasonable at $59 and it arrived the next day. It's gorgeous.

I used the standard mattress and just wrapped DD up in a big blanket swaddled. She had an angel care monitor so I couldn't wrap anything round the mattress itself.

I got given my sisters bassinet and cause it had been in storage, had to get a new mattress (the old one was covered in mould). Ended up getting a foam one made up for about $20-$30 through baby city and got a woolen underlay through flybuys. Worked well for us

We just use the standard one with a woollen blanket underneath the bottom sheet - all good so far! I did find that I had to give the mattress a good air out in the sun to get rid of the chemicall smells before we used it though

We actually had both. (and I would recommend getting 2 from the outset). Our boy was spilly but no more than usual and eventually the wool mattress had to be thrown (again get 2, otherwise cleaning becomes really, really hard) and caiboo only had the normal one when we went to replace it. We did get the wool cover and I can't say I noticed any difference in the two other than the non-wool mattress being higher and softer. For the money I would just stick to the normal one.

We used a Cariboo bassinet with DD and just had the foam mattress but with a woollen underlay. Worked fine for us.
