Recently Harry has started screaming/yelling at the top of his voice. It is extremely loud and piercing and annoying, especially when we are out and I have no idea what to do about it.

He does it for attention but then won't stop, when he is tired or wants something... and I've heard him do it when he is playing by himself. Normally he is pretty well behaved and understands and listens when I say "no" or "don't touch" - but not with this, he just screams louder. I tried ignoring it but he just keeps on doing it. If DH and I raise our voice and tell him off big time he starts to cry... so not sure what to do?

Why is he doing this and how can we get him to stop?

My DD went through a stage of doing this at about the same age but I ignored it from the beginning and it only lasted a month at most. I completely ignored it and even turned my back when she did it, was not long and she stopped, I also made a point of giving her positive attention once she was quiet. She makes loud noises now but only really when she is playing or looking at herself in the mirror but otherwise it was a phase that passed.

Jake does it too, its so annoying!!!! I always ask him to stop and use his "inside voice" and if he wont then I ignore him until he does and then like heidiesmum give him attention when he is quieter.

To be honest, not exactly sure what raising your voice to tell him off for raising his voice is doing? That would confuse him, when you are telling him not to do it but do it yourself???? Just my opinion

Do the opposite, speak really quietly & see if that makes an effect. He might stop yelling to hear what you are saying?

Although I do remember at times mimicking Alia which shocked her & then I said it's not nice on your ears is it. Obviously 13 months old is too young to do that on though.

Thanks for the tips ladies, have been speaking quietly to him and the louder he gets the quieter I get, and have been telling him that we don't yell... not sure what worked, but something did! He isn't doing it quite as much the last few days. Fingers crossed!

Sam goes through phases of this even now.    A few months of consistent screaming, yelling, shrieking and such, and then a few months of being normal.   He doesn't do it as much anymore, but at that age he did and it was so annoying!    I just either ignore him or speak really quietly.
