Topic: Finger food dinners Posted: 25 May 2010 at 5:07pm |
Ideas please....
I have a fussy 11 month old who we can hardly get dinner into. Over the past week I have tried making a plate of food and pretending to eat it myself, suddenly he is very interested and trying new things.
I dont want him to be a chicken nuggets and fish fingers kid so I would love some ideas, esp things to do with Veg, like a vegie hashbrown maybe?? He isnt a fan of vegies just as they are
tonight I think it might be eggy bread and mashed veg sort of like bubble and squeek. what should he have tomorrow???

at that age my kids all ate what we did. used to cut sausages into fingers, brocolli was popular cause we called it trees. roast veges can be eaten as finger food, beans carrots... any and everything really!

Mine loves rice and peas together, plain pasta, brocolli (we call it little trees too)
She is great with most vege, sometimes it takes her a while to get used to new things, so if they dont take it first time, try again
If im feeling lazy a hot bowl of baked beans does the trick for her, followed by yogurt and fruit

Do you eat dinner with him? Or perhaps just make yourself a much smaller serving of what he's having to eat at the same time? If he's really interested in you eating as well it might help. My DD tends to eat much better if we're all sitting down to dinner together. Just a thought

Quiche with veges in it, cut into squares.
Meatballs (with grated veges in them).

I make a self crusting every couple of weeks and Callum eats it (in small squares) non stop for about 3 days You can put so many different veges in quiche!!
Corn on the cob is a hug hit with C, we actually have to hide it till after tea otherwise he won't eat anything else!! Also he will happily pick up peas one at a time and broccoli if it's small enough.
We eat a lot of stiry fries with rice, Callum gets a plate full with everything cut up a bit smaller so he can help himself.
Scrambled egg and toast - I overcook the egg slightly so he can pick it up with his fingers if he wants as he's only just getting the hang of a fork.

Oh I was going to suggest the little bambini pasta that you can get, yes I know it says 12months plus but I figure she eats all our food anyway so unless they put something in it that adults shouldn't eat then it can't do any harm. But since your DS doesn't eat pasta probably won't help.
DD gets left overs alot! Come dinner time I am normally rummaging through the fridge and give her whatevers in there. Someones gotta eat it no one else does

Jude also eats everything that we do. We also find he eats better when we all sit down and eat together as a family. He loves it - warbles away as if he is making table talk, laughing and stuffing food in his face as he goes.
My ideas are homemade pizza with veges on it (you don't have to have tomato sauce on it if you don't want to - as well as tomato based pizza sauce we also try cranberry sauce which is great with chicken, or basil and corriander paste). Cruskit with hummus (great for protein). Rice cakes with cream cheese. (Those two are usually morning or afternoon tea snacks though). Jude also looooves homemade chunky soups with bread to soak it up. Kumara, pumpkin and potato mash (you should see the fistfuls that go into his mouth!) Oh another thing is creamy mushrooms (white sauce and mushrooms) on toast.
Yum - my mouth is watering thinking of all this food.

Another idea is to take any leftover cooked veges like brocolli, potato, pumpkin etc (can add meat or grated cheese to if you like) and mash them together, add an egg if you need to, squish into fingers, roll in breadcrumbs and fry in a pan. Really quick and easy and healthy.
