Cian's still waking through the night (sometimes up to 4 times) and i'm getting seriously desperate!! I know he CAN sleep through cause he does it every now and then and can't for the life of me figure out why he's waking... anyone got any ideas??

This is his routine at the moment:

5.30-6.30am wake up, have breakfast
9-9.30am snack
11-11.30am lunch followed by a nap (usually 1- 1 1/2 hours)
2.30pm snack plus milk
5.30-6pm dinner, followed by bath
7pm into bed for a couple of stories and down for the night

he usually goes down without any fuss, but will almost always wake at 12am and 3am for no apparent reason. he's in a single bed (we wanted to get him out of the cot early to get ready for the new baby) so most times he won't even cry out when he wakes, just gets out of bed and comes into our room. Short of locking him in there I'm really at a loss as to how to deal with this, and so so tired...

We used a safety sleep with Jake and when he learnt how to undo that we used packing tape over that to keep him in it lol kept him in bed and meant we didn't have to shut the door overnight (gets shut when hes first in bed then opened when we go to bed).
Otherwise you could try just taking him straight back to his bed and tucking him in without interacting with him?
HTH being sleep deprived sucks and believe me you'll want every single precious second of sleep when #2 arrives!!!!!

thanks babe... we've done the no interaction thing and he settles again fine, just can't stop him getting out of bed!

having said that the last two nights in a row he's slept right through (woohoo!!) with extra boosted nappies and some antiseptic cream for a small infection i just noticed he had after the op... fx that was the problem and i haven't just jinxed myself!

Do you have to have him out of the cot? I know someone who had similar issues and he was getting up cos he could, put back in cot and he was fine?

Having said that 2 nights of sleeping through is great and maybe something was just disturbing him enough to get up - hopefully you've got it sorted.

thanks fiona - unfortunately those two blissful nights were followed by two of the worst nights ever (up 4-5 times!!!)

we had thought about maybe putting him back in his cot, but reluctant to do that in case it's just a backwards step - especially when we're going to be needing the cot in a few months...

I have some help coming from a sleep consultant so fx she can offer some inspiration!

Since you have a few months I would suggest putting him back in the cot. Leave the bed in the room too. With our #1 we asked her if she wanted to be in the cot or be in the "big kids bed". Every time she wanted to be in the big kids bed. The only condition we used was that she had to stay in bed until her nightlight came on. We set this on a timer for 6am in the morning. No nightlight meant no get up, She did understand and it took a few nights but she got the idea. It shouldn't take too long before he chooses to be (and stay) in the bed.
