Topic: What was in your labour bag and what.... Posted: 08 August 2007 at 1:19pm |
did you actually find useful??
I have been putting it off for weeks now but I finally realise I need to look at packing! I packed for baby the other day (totally overpacked there but thats ok the bag had room). But for me I am stumped.
Here is what I am thinking
Summer PJs...hospitals are hot right?
Dressing gown
Slippers
Trackies etc if I dont want to be in PJs and for coming home?
Bras
Grandma undies..really struggling with this concept...any brands you recommend.
Maternity pads - 2 lots of stayfree, 1 of libra
Breast pads - disposable and washable
Rescue remedy (seemed to help at the wedding)
Drink bottle
Powerade
Chocolate bickies
Camera
Wheat bag
hottie
Anything I have forgotten...any thing you think is a waste of time? anything you think is invaluable.
I call on the collective Ohbaby wisdom!!!

Don't worry about pjs, just wear the hospital gowns.. you will be bleeding and at least if they get blood on them they do the washing rather than you. You shouldn't need maternity pads either, just use theirs and keep yours for when you come home.
lol Grandma undies. I just got a pack of 5 undies from the warehouse for about $6 and used those.
Take something to read or do. It gets incredibly boring outside of visiting hours when bubs is asleep.

battery charger for camera/video/phone
Would also advise to put clothing in for you as i felt so much better after havinga shower putting day clothes on than staying in PJ's , not sure hwo long you are staying in hospital for but I took 3 pairs of PJ's and had to get Hubby to wash one so I could have it again (accident of leakage :-)
As for the granny knickers - i got some plain ones from Postie plus 3 for $10 you don;t want to spend a fortune on them as 1. they are for whoopies of over flow 2. no ones gonna see them 3. who in their right mind would want to use them after that
Also I got given some nice smellies for in the shower and afterwards - it wa really nice just to pamper myself in there.. long shower while Midwife looked after baby etc.... Although i was in a small nursing home and there was only 2 of us so the midwife had plenty of time to help us out.
Oh and paper and pen. You may like to write down about the birth and the few days afterwards (leading up to labour) I did this with all mine and love reading over it. Its also handy to write down who gave you what presents etc...

PS i agree with kebakat in that if they ssupply you with pads etc.. use theirs, might as well so you can keep yours till when you go home. I was in hospital for 5 days and did most of my heavy bleeding then, when i got home i think i only used one pack of the maternity ones then went onto normal pads.

And see if you can pinch some when you go home. I used maternity pads for 2 weeks cause they were nice and soft and I was quite heavily bleeding.

lots of undies... and a toilet bag of nice soap and moisturiser - the air con can dry your skin out - and lip balm and hairbrush. you'll prob find that you wont fit into your pre maternity pants straight away so make sure the pants you do take are roomy.
i wouldnt bring too much food in - depending on where you are staying - cause of night bugs etc...and i found any food i took in for the labour got used by hubby, not me...

Definitely agree on the snack food - biscuits are good, as are things like grapes as you can just snack on a few at a time. Something to read or do (I like getting a puzzle magazine because it's easy to do a little then come back to whenever you feel like it) is good, as is having a nice bodywash for the shower.
Comfy clothes for lounging around in are quite useful - just remember, you will still have a bit of a tummy (about the same as at 7.5 months pregnant) so pack to suit. If you are considering breastfeeding, pack tops with good access - either proper breastfeeding tops or button-front shirts are good. Baggy t-shirts are good too, but I found the extra material a pain to keep out of the way when I was first getting breastfeeding figured out.

Got your toiletries?? Shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste & brush, hairbrush, deoderant, moisteriser, facewash & they say to take toilet paper with you - like 3 or 4 ply as the hospital paper isn't all that nice on a sore tush.
I have packed one pack of maternity pads but think I won't need them as only planning on staying one night & will use the hospital pads.
Yeah it does get warm in hospital - they keep it warm for the babies. So wouldn't go winter jammies at all!

what hospital are you going to? Dark coloured trackpants are great and loose singlets so you can pull your boob out the top. I was at burwood and wasn't offered the hospital gowns.
Magazines and puzzle books cos it gets quite boring in hospital as wee babies sleep a lot.
I got a really nice skin firming moituriser I'm not sure if it worked or not but it smelt so good and made me feel great.

I found that those tops which button part way down the front (to a bit below where your bra sits) fantastic for breastfeeding in hospital. I think they call them henleys or grandpa shirts, something like that? You can get them at Cotton On. Anyway, I have three and they're awesome because you don't have to bare your scary post pregnancy jelly-belly when feeding, just unbutton and fold one side down.

Oh, and lollies were great because they were all I was allowed to eat after the epidural. Barley sugars keep your energy up. We had some of those natural confectionary co dinosaurs too.

hmmmmm lollies!!!! Why hadnt I thought of that. I am such a sweet tooth.
Rach, I am hoping to birth at womens and then transfer to St Gs. I got the impression that they dont really supply you with much but I guess if you had nothing they would have to help out.

Have you got a baby book?? That was something I did in my 'down time' was to fill that out (because I had the time!) Definitely lollies and/or chocolate bars (like Mars/Moro), button down shirt because breastfeeding is tricky enough in those first few days without having to contend with 'access' issues!! And a good book...

women's didn't supply me with pads but did give a fresh supply of nappies and wipes (i think) for bubs. st georges have pads in the toilets so i would use theirs first and fill your bag before you go home
but that was almost 3yrs ago (st georges) so it may have changed

burwood seems really nice and stress free babytyme. You should come along to the swimming sessions they have in the hydrotherapy pool wed and fri am. 11-12. IT is free if you are birthing there or $2 if you arent. Pool is 37 degrees and lovely....it is hardly strenuous and noone cares what you look like or wear!

St Georges didn't offer me a gown if I remember rightly they might of supplied one packet of pads but not to sure so definitely take your own but sounds like you have everything I took with me except I forgot snacks so I just ordered heaps of food at meal times so I had midnight snacks you get really hungrey breastfeeding. Undies wise I just used my old boy leg ones they are really comfy you can get them quite cheap at the wharehouse.
