Topic: rasberry leaf tea Posted: 08 April 2011 at 12:07pm |
can someone remind me when its considered 'safe' to drink? Is it after the first trimester or not until the third? Want to give some as a gift to a tea-loving newly pregnant friend. Someone gave me some tea called 'mother-to-be tea' which was in a fancy box and was a mix of rasberry, peppermint, ginger etc does anyone know where i might find that? Something a bit fancier then just plain rasberry leaf tea!

My mw told me not to touch it until 36/37 weeks but others were telling me it was ok to take sooner! Mw said 1 cup a day at 37 weeks and can up to 2 cups at 39 weeks... 3 cups at 40 weeks etc but she said women often had the misconception that it would help put them in labour and get upset when they went overdue...
I think from memory people in my DD thread were drinking it earlier that 36 weeks.

Yeah i always heard that you could start drinking it at around 36 weeks. I took the capsules which my MW said i could take from 35 weeks, which i did.

I was told 35wks last time, then my baby came at 36.5wks so this time I've been told not to touch it till 37wks. The MW said it can cause some people's uterus's to kick into action or something (she also said that's not proven at all, just from what she's seen)

Yep i thought 36 weeks also.
I thought it was just to help ripen the cervix, just like EPO. Not actually to put you into labour.

I started taking the tablets at 37 weeks and went into labour at 38. Not sure if it helped though.

My herbalist has had a low dose of it in the tea she made for me right from the beginning, at low doses it isn't going to do anything untoward, just help your uterus get nice & strong Same with my last pregnancy, I upped it big time towards the end & went into spontaneous labour 4 days before my EDD.

PS...it's to tone your uterus rather than soften the cervix or start labour, to help it function well when the time comes.
(I'm quite a herbal medicine enthusiast, and have a damned good herbalist to guide me in my investigations!)

Thanks guys - wasnt hoping to start her labour or anything, more that she is a huge tea fiend and it would be the perfect thing for her. I believe what you're saying serendipity but probably best not to hand out things that might potentially even slightly be risky as gifts!
