Topic: Flying at 28 weeks Posted: 11 January 2011 at 5:40pm |
Hi there, I was wondering if anyone knew the actual problem with flying whilst pregnant?
My flight will be a bit different, I will be taking off and landing 6 times throughout the day - its a multi stop flight between Ak and Christchurch.
A one hour flight, I have been told, is usually not a problem...however with the constant taking off and landing, would that be an issue?
Any help would be great!!

One risk is higher risk of DVT because of prolonged sitting, so if you're just moving around when you can, you should be fine.
I'm sure there are other risks - will see what others come up with!

Thank you! As the flights are fairly short (1 hour tops for each leg), theres just a lot of them! You have given me a lot more confidence in going. It is for work, but is optional. :)

Hi - I flew to USA at 27 weeks preg and back at 29 wks preg. Was direct AKL - LA, 5 hrs in LA then direct LA to JFK. A Few days later JFK - LV (Vegas), then a few days later, LV - LA, 4 hours in LA then LA - AKL. I wore compression tights, drunk heaps, got up and walked around lots and apart from swelling big time all was good and I have a healthy 13 month old now!

I flew to Aussie at 33 weeks & had no issues, just wore compression socks to help & drunk water.
My midwife actually said flying is probalby better than driving cause you can get up & walk around alot where in a car driving you just want to get there so tend not to move so much.

I read somewhere that the change in pressure can bring on labour so at 28 weeks you should be fine.

It is completely fine.
I flew all the time - often four or five flights in a day like you. Drink heaps, do your ankle exercises and make sure you walk around heaps between flights.

I flew much later than that, had a fair few flights in one day and was fine, just got a bit swollen. Make sure you take a large water bottle on the plane, poke your tummy out as far as you can at check in so they might have an empty seat next to you which can make a difference lol.
