Topic: Odd Question Posted: 01 January 2011 at 5:01pm |
Hi guys,
Im currently 20 weeks pregnant with my first child and am just having an issue i hope some experienced people can help with!!
I have days when I get SO hungry I feel sick to my stomach, im sure its hunger because once i eat i feel fine until i get hungry again, its a never ending cycle. Has anyone else had this with their pregnancies? I asked my step mum as she recently had a baby but she said she doesn't remember ever having any issues with her appetite. Its upsetting because i've had to take the last 2 days of work because i feel SO sick that i don't know if i should eat or grab a bucket! My husband is so understanding but i feel so bad that if i eat later on in the day i feel better because i think he thinks i should have been at work all along but i can't go and stand on my feet for up to 8 hours at a time feeling like my stomach is getting ready to jump out my mouth.
I've tried having fruit next to the bed and eating it before i get up but this morning it just made me feel worse. Im so lost because i don't know what to do. We can't really afford to have a never ending supply of food to snack on so that i can eat all day, its just so frustrating!
thanks

Thats what kept my ms at bay this time around for most of this pregnancy! I just made sure I had lots of nibbly things, most of its stuff I had for the kids school lunches anyways, stuff like muesli bars, tiny teddies, shapes crackers, fruit etc. I found that veges like carrot or celery sticks did nothing to curb that 'Im going to be sick if I dont eat' feeling, so my guess is its a blood sugar level thing?
DP has seen me when I skip a meal (I'm lucky to last an hour past usual 'feeding time'), so he knows not to touch any of the food I have bought and set aside as nibbles to keep it from repeating!

I have the exact same problem with both my pregnancies. Luckly for me this time it subsided by around 20wks. I found that eating carbs really helped as they kept me full for longer, also eating bananas and drinking complan/vitaplan. I avoided eating sweet foods and fruit (except for watermelon) when feeling extra hungry as they just made me feel worse. During the night I would have either a piece of bread or a banana at least twice a night, and tired to drink lots of iced water. You could even try a plain biscuits or something like cheese and crackers.
Oh and sucking on peppermints or spearmints helped me a bit as well. Though I soon got bored with those.

Yeah im not too sure if its actual morning sickness. When i first found out I had about a week where i felt sick 24/7 but was never once physically sick, since then i have had the odd day where i feel crappy but nothing id say was MS but then what would I know - i haven't done this before!
It just makes me upset because i feel like if baby is making me feel this way im not giving him enough of what he needs so he feels ok, i feel like a bad mother already! I have stuff like school snack foods here because its what i take to work, i might have to get hubby to take me to the shops and get stuff just for home aswell
Flutterby - yeah i really only eat banannas, i've found i've been put off many of the other fruits apart from cherries but they are expensive. Its just difficult with money being so tight right now because we can only afford the essentials and we only have what is left of my husbands holiday pay until he goes back to work which isnt until the end of the month and that has to cover all the bills.

Morning sickness isn't just throwing up, its general nausea as well, with Ty I only threw up twice but felt nauseous all the time, thats a form of MS
As for the hunger thing, yep, with all three pregnancies I have been ravenously "oh my god if you don't feed me now im going to start eating my foot " hungry

Don't feel like that. Baby will take exactly what he needs from you!

I am the worlds worst eater and i felt terrible too because i'd often go for entire days or two without eating anything at all (i simply forget!) but my midwife and everyone i know said the same - bubs will take whatever he needs from you, he will suffer no harm. YOU will though.
And yup, constantly felt like i was going to throw up if i didnt eat NOW. Sometimes i'd be racing to cook something and get it in my mouth before i DID vom. Which is horrid as the last thing you want to do is cook when you feel that sick. Recommend having easy to munch things lying around, and keep them in your purse, desk drawer, glovebox as well you never know when it'll strike!! Fruit might not be the ideal - most people recommend dry crackers/toast.
Since money is an issue, you may find it cheaper to make snacks yourself. I used to buy the bulk packs of popping corn ($2 ish) and pop it myself then seperate it into seperate bags. Less fat/sodium on homepopped as well and wickedly cheap aside from the effort.

Just thought too, do you have family who can bake for you? My MIL loves to feel useful lol and would bake me heaps of slices, scones etc when I had ms and needed to eat lots but didn't have the energy to make anything. People like to help!
Hope it passes soon for you

I went off most fruit and vege as well in the early days. Even now I have to force myself to cook veges. And bananas and watermelon were the only fruits I could really eat for a good while.

Thanks guys, im feeling better today and made it to work. I think it is just a matter of needing to eat more. My midwife came into work today and asked how we were so i told her and her suggestion was keeping something in my pocket but i work at a cash register and that isn't something that is doable!!
I might do that popping corn one! sounds like a winner and pop corn is so tasty! thanks
