Topic: A totally random and stupid question Posted: 24 November 2010 at 3:47pm |
Innie belly buttons vs outies.
I had totally random thoughts about this the other night and am too embarrassed to ask mw or antenatal class.
Do babies get given innies or outies these days? Is it always the same or is it up to the mw.
I'm not bothered either way, just curious

Ummmmmm I had no idea innie or outtie belly buttons were up to the midwife? I thought it was just body differences. Call me naive?

yeah I thought it was just up to the body as well. I don't really see how the MW can choose, since all they do is cut the cord and you just have to wait a few days for it to fall off.

It just heals how it heals My DD had a slight umbilical hernia, and even now that it's pretty much gone, I suspect she'll always have an outie because of that.

Lily had an umbilical hernia (outie) but it healed up by 5 months and is now an innie. Though they said if she still had it at 1 (the hernia) then they would operate.
But def just how it heals. Outies are umbilical hernias. I remember when Lily was 5 weeks old the doc asking if I knew what it was (He pointed to her belly button) and I said 'An outie...?' he laughed and said "No, it's an umbilical hernia." to which I thought OMG!!

This gave me a (much needed) giggle. I used to think like this. I thought that the midwife/dr tied a knot and that made the belly button! But no...they just clamp the cord and when it falls off, there is a belly button underneath. I was so surprised how it works. So it is luck of the draw.

Ha ha what a great topic My mum says I had an outie as a baby and her doc told her to tape a 50c coin over it every night. I now have an innie so it must have worked. Sounds strange but she swears its true!

With the hernia I think it's because it goes in and out iygwim, but some stay outies?
Re the 50c coin - I heard that too, but I've always done DDs nappies tight so think that helped !

Lexie has an outie but noone had ever mentioned anything about it being a hernia? Should I get it checked?
I had wondered the same thing before Lexie was born too

Has it been seen by anyone 'medical' before Bex? I'm sure if it was cause for concern they would have said something - although my MW didn't... And I had asked because her cord fell out after a week and she still had bleeding at 4 weeks because of the hernia.

Not specifically but when she had her checks and stuff when she was about 6 weeks old it was seen, and shes been to appointments before where they would've seen it... Midwife never said anything either?

I suppose no harm in asking next appointment?
I don't think it bothers them... Tbh I thought they were genetic although the only one with one in my family is my granddad.

I don't think having an outie is a problem. DS1 has an outie and he is 3 in February and absolutely fine. DS2 has a definite innie though so that throws the idea that it might be hereditary in the air for us!
