Topic: BCP to regulate hormones? Posted: 19 October 2010 at 8:10pm |
Hope you guys don't mind me asking this here . . . I'm wondering if a preggy demographic might have some input for this?
Has anyone been prescribed contraceptive pill after miscarriage? If your hormones have not gone back to 'normal'? Prolonged bleeding?
Or if you've had odd bleeding in your cycle anyway
I'm jumping the gun maybe, I haven't had this prescribed yet (I like to preempt these things ahead of time!), but am seeing hospital in about 3 weeks and I think they might bring this up.
I'm really wary about it . . . I want to be ttc NOT taking pills to prevent conception!
I also feel that there is some hormone weirdness going on and has been for maybe the last 2 years. I'm concerned about oestrogen excess (well, something affecting luteal phase too) and bcp is massive for this isn't it?
Also not understanding how this restarts cycle if hormones already out of whack, would this not just screw everything up completely?
Then again, what other ways are there to sort this out (I know about B6 and Vitex already)?
Anyone? Thoughts/ideas/opinions? been there, done this, did it work?

My GP wanted to put me on the BCP in order for me to start menstruating again after the birth of my son (I was wanting to TTC and hadn't started ovulating again 20 months after his birth).
I refused. To me it does not make sense at all - I explained that I wanted to ovulate, not just have a bleed.
I also don't think that it makes sense to add hormones to your body after a miscarriage.
Before I started TTC with DS, I went off the pill and didn't have a period for a year. The GP couldn't find anything wrong, so I went to see a Traditional Chinese Medicine Dr. She gave me a whole lot of strange smelly herbs to boil up and drink the liquid. I ovulated a few days later, and my periods were regular after that. I drunk the tea for about 2 weeks and it sorted my crazy hormones out. So I strongly recommend trying that.

This is sort of in the same vein as the TCM that hila has suggested, but try acupuncture - I went for regular treatment after my second miscarriage (and with a history of irregular cycles), had my first "textbook" cycle in years and conceived pretty much with the ovulation that came once my m/c bleeding was finished.

I should add that I wanted to exhaust the more 'natural/alternative' therapies options first, before I resorted to putting artificial stuff into my system to help things along, and I'm really confident the acupuncture made the difference.

I would be very reluctant to take BCPs in attempt to regulate hormones when you are TTC. I think it may make some sense if you aren't wanting to TTC... however, from my experience as soon as I stopped taking BCPs my cycles were all crazy again. I too would be more inclined to try some natural alternatives first. Before this pregnancy my hormones were completely mucked up. I'd have random spotting often, very long periods (up to 30 days at it's worst), long time without periods, heavy bleeding and so on... I was booked to see a FS to try to sort it out, and decided to try Natures Way vitex in the mean time... I then had a normal 26 day cycle (usually 60-90 days with spotting all over the show) followed by a normal 4-5 day AF, and then the next cycle no spotting except around ov and I conceived this baby. I know it doesn't work for everyone but I'm sure it sorted me out. I would be more inclined to try something like that before BCP - and maybe a naturopath could advise what is most appropriate...

Hey thanks so much for responding! When I posted this I was feeling like I would be being deliberately obstructive and shortsighted to bcp as an option, but from the responses on here, I’m feeling a bit more reassured that my gut feelings aren’t entirely always offtrack!! Yeah if I wasn’t ttc, maybe I wouldn’t be as bothered, just seems like a waste of 3 months if it just buggers up hormones even more
The acupuncture/naturopath recommendation seems to be a common theme.
I did go for acupuncture in Jan til about May . . . I have been having bleeding through most of the luteal phase every cycle for over 2 years now, so I wanted acu to try and sort that . . . I noticed no change unfortunately. I was VERY open to acu working for me (did wonders for hayfever years back, so I’m convinced it works on whatever level) but it didn’t seem to. I stopped as at the time we were not actively ttc (waiting for gynae appt), and the acu lady was wanting to know what the gynae was going to discover (which turned out to be nothing conclusive) so I didn’t go back . . . got utd for this most recent mc then. And then retained product till this week . . . so hopefully that might be the end of the bleeding . . . hopefully
I’m not rolling in barrels of money, this might sound tightfisted, but I don’t want to chuck hundreds more dollars at something that doesn’t seem to be working, this is coming out of the money I put aside for baby things like cots etc. I know its hard to know until you do it.
I’m glad it worked for you, Hippy mama as I hear it does for lots of other people. I totally would want the natural route if poss, as I lean more towards finding out whats going on and sorting it, rather than suppressing symptoms with artificial chemicals.
I usually do have regular cycles, and my temps are biphasic, its just the luteal bleeding and recurrent mc I want to get a handle on.
Had a naturopath recommended to me some weeks back and following the nudge from these threads I’ve left a message to see if that might be a possibility. I will drink tea that tastes of sh*te for weeks on end if it means happy healthy cycles and fullterm healthy living babies

I recommend going to a naturopath who does hormone level tests not hugely expensive but very effective from what I've heard. I'm getting the test done (though not for baby-related stuff), its just a saliva test and the naturopath can prescribe what you require to straighten your hormones out.
I agree with everyone else - taking the bcp would be at the bottom of my 'to try' list.
Hugs and best of luck in sorting it all out xx
