Topic: morning sickness Posted: 11 October 2010 at 10:09pm |
hey everyone im ashley and i planned every little bit of my pregnancy and i knew i would suffer extreme morning sickness as i was born with a weak immune system and to add im very tiny and 23. iv had one other pregnancy in nov 08 but lost them in jan 09 and the story can go on for light years.
so what im basicly making this topic on is not just morning sickness for that first tri but for the whole gosh darn 9 months!!! im 6 months in about a week and i have a speacial bucket at home AND at my mothers whom looks after me 4-5 days a week while my partner is away working. oh to have my dinner made without lifting a finger is amazing. but who else brings at least half of it up within the first hour in lil mouthfuls at a time. its turned into a 'oh ive vomit in my mouth i thougth i burped' instead of running to the bathroom... but only part of the time then its up to 2-3am with the big time painful hurl.
my midwife, docs, friends, family do the whole 'wait it out' thing except my mum who know the body inside out is so sure my liver and kidneys have gone downhill... shes never once wrong.
for those mums who wish they could have morning sickness so they can feel pregnant... you can trade places with me.
who else has a horrid experience?

*hugs* its horrible feeling so sick all the time!
Just make sure you are keeping enough fluids down (and food) if you're not, talk to the doctor and you can go to hospital to have fluids.. it helps alot.
I hope you feel better soon!

Poor you. im 21 and suffer from the same! i never brought it up in little bits, always in one horrible big go, but it's yuck both ways.
I have hyperemesis - sounds like you do too - and have to be hospitalised and on meds etc for my pregnancies. This time around I was on zofran for most of it (cost about $800!) but have now switched to cyclizine 3x a day. I simply can't manage without meds, and like you, had to have my mum look after me 24/7 for the first few months while my DH was working.
it's really important that you keep your fluids up - I suggest you go to the dr to have your urine tested for keytones - these indicate dehydration. it's also important that you keep eating little and often, even if you throw it back up. i suggest you stay away from rice and noodles. yogurt and chocolate taste pretty much the same coming back up. lol sorry i know that is gross, but it's true!
it's also really important that you can talk about how you are feeling to your partner or mum, or someone else you trust, as sickness like this can really get you down and can lead to ante-natal depression; it did for me.
hope this helps, and hope you feel better soon!

hugs from me as well I'm 23 and I have had bad nausea for most of my pregnancy, it seems to be settling down now. the best advice my midwife gave me was to eat what I felt like. I was less likely to throw up then. Also ice is a good way to get fluids. Cinnamin donuts also taste good when you throw them up. Medication is a great saviour. If you have any concerns phone your midwife.

zofran $800?? that seems extreme? i had zofran during this pregnancy for the whole first trimester and going into second and it only cost me maybe $10 max?
there is absolutely nothing worse then morning sickness.. ive had hyperemesis in the past also and it was just awful.. the saver for me this time round was eating constantly whatever i could stomach and the zofran, without it i know i would have developed hyperemesis again as i was very sick
take care of yourself and get lots of rest, also milkshakes are easy to vomit and sometimes can be good at staying down also if you can stomach them too..

i was going to go to the doc yesturday but its gotten so pointless they wont put me on the fluids cause i 'look fine' i just get nausea tablets which my doc always forgets they im allergic to them.
milo is prob my worst to bring up as it seperates and goes lumpy smells the worst. the only food to make me feel good is doughnuts hahaha but dont get them really till i go back home for the weekend as my mum is all 'sugar ashley!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no!'
at least baby is doing fine lucky thing.
it does feel slightly better having lil mouthfuls just randomly constantly comeup in the day then the massive buildups of 3 an hour then afew hours later another then up all night in pain blablabla just cause i get to jump on here now and then and can go for a short walk (with a snacklock bag in my pocket) and let my kitties cuddle up to me.
it does make it alot harder not being able to be with my partner much he works out of auckland where we live and is only back mostly weekends.

Wow only $10 for zofran? Lucky you! I was taking 3 a day at one point though, and dropped to 2 1/2 then 2. I took them until about a month or so ago, and every 90 tablets cost me a couple of hundred. thankfully my dear pa paid for most of them; he lives in england and wanted to help out. phew! i couldn't get them subsidised, dr said they only do that for cancer patients.
i don't know how medically sound this advice is, so check with your midwife, but i was of the opinion that you just eat what you can stomach, so if all you can cope with is donuts, then eat them - obviously within reason, you need proper sustainence too and can't live on junk.
also, if you are feeling like you might be dehydrated - no energy, etc...at one point in my last preg i just fainted all the time - then i would demand (or have your mum demand for you, if you're not up to it!) that your dr at least do a urine test for keytones, regardless of whether you 'look fine' or not. also try drinks with isotopes like Mizone. I would avoid milos personally, because the milk won't be so great for your stomach and they are more likely to come back up. also, i would water down juice if you drink juice as it can be too strong for your stomach.

Your doctor can't tell if you are ok just by looking at you.. I would get a second opinion.

I think you need to change doctors asap! As above poster, doctor can't tell just by looking at you!
I went into acute renal failure before this pregnancy due to severe dehydration and my doctor needed to do a urine sample to send away, not just dip stick, as well as bloods. My kidneys are playing up again and only doing a urine dip stick picked up blood in the urine, despite the fact I'm well hydrated.
You sound so down too, I'm sure a decent doctor can find medication for sickness you are not allergic to. Sounds like you need a thorough physical check up by someone who *cares*.

yeah i was having one or two every day, wafers when i couldnt keep the tablets down.. i wonder if specialist prescription makes a difference to the cost maybe, but i couldnt take anything else as the other ones make me have bad reactions. If i had any left i'd pass them to you so you didnt tave to pay so much!!
agree with all the above also, go to the enmergency room if your dehydrated it can be very dangerous for you and baby.. and just eat what you want to eat and dont have aversions to,
you poor dear i hope it improves for you a bit as you progress, pregnancy can be such a tough time

With my daughter my ms went up to 38 weeks, but I didn't have nausea with it
With my son I had nausea and only threw up twice (good baby )
this one is a combination of both , for the first 16 weeks I had to run to the bathroom and was constantly nauseous ....and now my MS has come back.
I sympathise, MS is arse and on the whole mine isn't really that bad

Hi Ashleya.
My daughter is 10 months and I suffered sevre hyperemesis during my pregnancy. I was still vomitting even through my labor.
In and out of hospital during pregnancy and for the first three months I was bed ridden, even needing help to shower as I was too weak to stand for more than a couple of minutes.
I would recomend seeing another doctor. My dr put me on maxlon which I had an allergic reaction to. I never knew until another dr pointed out that it works on the central nervous system. I suffered from shaking, depression, couldn't sleep and very negative thoughts due to the maxlon. I fell into pretty bad ante natal depression and started regretting wanting a baby. Two days off the medication however and I was happy and much stronger to deal with the sickness.
I to had a bucket at all places. Had one in lounge, bedroom, car, my mother's place and at my work station.
Once I learned at what times of the day I was worse I could work out an eating regime. I set my alarm at 4am every morning and sat up and had a musli bar with some water and then went back to sleep. It meant I wouldn't be too bad in the mornings. If I went on an empty stomach I would just vomit bile. Sorry for the TMI. DH then would make me breakfast in bed and I would make sure I stayed in bed for 10-15 minutes after eating and then slowly get up.
Has your midwife told about complan or vitaplan? I was unable to eat or drink because everything came back up, but when I did I would drink vitaplan. Gives you the vitamins and nutrients you need.

Yup...you can be pretty sick!! It's horrible! Pregnancy is overrated, but the reward is SO worth it, so hang in there!
I had it daily until my DD's birthday...so, the whole time!! Medication was helpful (there are a few options for this), and fluids at hospital if you need to. Is your midwife getting you to pee on a stick at your appointments? They can check your ketones (as mentioned above) and make sure you aren't dehydrated.
Thing is - babies of mum's with hyperemesis are generally healthy!! Baby takes what s/he needs...mum suffers through!! GOOD NEWS IS: once bubba is born, sickness goes!!! BLISS. (it is really really hard to imagine that when you are in the middle of it though)
If you are wanting to see other's experiences with MS do a search...I remember I wrote an "help me I feel awful" post when I was sick last year & heaps of lovely helpful people responded.
Look after yourself!
ETA: I'm little too - just weighed 46kg pre-preg - lost about 5kg in first trimester...

I had hyperemesis gravidarium (sp?) with my oldest and was hospitalised at 15-16 weeks (was in for the whole week) to get re-hydrated as it got to the point nothing would stay down, not even mouthfuls of water, but for some reason once that was done, I seemed to come right and had an easy pregnancy after that...
Not quite so lucky with the next one, hopitalised at 9 weeks and on a combination of Maxalon, Cyclizine, and Ranitidine for the remainder of my pregnancy, every time i tried to stop taking it, I was back to being sick all day.
This time I got the leftover meds from last time and made sure they were there when I needed them... but so far apart from mild nausea, and the occasional throw-up, I havent taken a single tablet...
The only thing I can put it down to is snacking on small amounts, no large meals, and drinking as much as I can, and resting if I start to feel run down... dont know if its that, or that my body has learnt to 'handle' pregnancy, but somethings worked!
Hugs, I remember how horrible I felt with my middle child, I'm glad you have lots of help around you, I wasnt quite so lucky, was working f/time and no family nearby or available to help out. Have you tried any anti-emetic medication to see if it helps keep the worst of it at bay? it might help to get your mum to come along with you, I'm sure she'd be able to tell the doctor just how bad you've been feeling if they wont believe you on your own!

You poor thing Ashleya, totally sympathise. I didn't have it as bad, was all day nausea until I was 21 weeks but only threw up twice, but I know how that constant feeling gets you down and takes some of the joy of pregnancy away. I really hope it ends fast for you, I think that was what really got me, was when after 13 weeks I was still feeling really bad felt like it would never end! It will soon for you, hopefully it won't go right thru. Only things that seemed to help me was eating little bits and again, eating what I felt like. I say if donuts all you can eat, like previous post, eat away! It will do no harm at least you will be keeping something down. Salt n vinegar chippies settle my tummy and once I figured that it won't matter if I have lots in the 1st tri so long as it helped me keep off meds and gave me apetite for other food I would be fine, don't beat yourself up - or let others beat you up over what you can manage to eat! Best wishes for beating it fast

Wow, hugs to everyone who is having a hard time with MS.
I'm only at 10 weeks and I've been feeling rather rough since week 5. I only throw up once or twice a day - which I thought was bad, but after doing some reading I really can't complain.
Had a hard time over the weekend though, was at a 3 day conference and was walking with a co worker to get breakfast (had already eaten an apple in the hotel) - Had to stop in the middle of the footpath to throw up in a bag
Worst thing was people from the conference were walking past and giving my co-worker looks of "well someone had a big night last night!"
Also today had to take my dad to hospital for an X-ray (post heart surgery and he can't drive). Felt really rough and was lucky enough to get outside and vomit in a bag in the car park, rather then in the waiting room with everyone else.
Fingers crossed this will all clear up by 12-13 weeks. I am getting so tired and annoyed with people constantly thinking I'm hungover!
I'm guessing everyone else in here has been losing weight (little eating + lots of vomiting = weight loss). I've lost 3kgs already and people keep telling me to eat more - I would if I could!
Big hugs to all (sorry for the long post)
