Topic: 1st time preg...going crazy..help! Posted: 13 September 2010 at 8:54am |
Hi guys just wondering if you can help me
Ok so seeing as this is my first pregnancy, i'm kind of like what do i do now?!
I rang a midwife on friday and just waiting to hear back if they can take me, is there anything else I need to do? Do I need to go and see my normal doctor as well?
oh and I spent the whole weekend thinking about food. i was so hungry the whole time but I didnt know what I could eat! I printed off the OB food safety chart thingy but was still unsure.
can you eat things like bacon? if its really hot? and can you have it on a sandwich or something if its cold? and salami's fine if you have it on pizza or something right? and things like leftovers...safe or not safe?
basically i'm wondering what you can eat, i don't want to go overboard on the whole eating thing, but I do want to be safe. What did you eat or not eat in your pregnancies? like what are things that you wouldn't touch with a 10 foot barge pole and what things would you eat if you were cautious with it?
also things like medications, i know basically you are only allowed panadol, but can you have strepsils and stuff if you have a cold?
so if you could give me a basic rundown on things you can/cant do/eat would be fantastic.
sorry if this has been asked before and sorry if i sound like a complete noob. TIA!

I never saw a Dr last time or this time - the MW can give you the necessary BT forms which need to be done about 8 weeks...
I'm hopeless with the eating thing! I always forget and eat things I shouldn't... You can eat bacon or salami etc as long as they are pipping hot... you can't eat them cold in sandwiches. Lunches are so hard! cos you can't eat salads either unless they are well washed so you can't just buy a salad sandwich or ham sandwich... but you can have ham toasties as long as the ham is HOT!

if you google ministry of health healthy eating guidelines for pregnancy you should get a list of the foods that are deemed unsafe during pregnancy.
Congrats on your pregnancy btw

Basically deli meats only if they are piping hot, leftovers are fine the following day, again if they are nuked to within an inch of their lives.
No raw fish or seafood.
No sushi
No soft serve ice cream
No brie / camembert
No unpasturised milk products
No pre packaged sandwiches or salads
No smorgasboard food (like the food courts at shopping centres)
Eggs must be well cooked (ie yolks not runny)
That's about all I can think of but if you google it you'll find the guidlines.
In terms of medication, I work on the basis that I can only have panadol, if I need/want something else I normally google the manufacturer as most will have on their website if it is safe for pregnancy. Buy all that stuff from the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist on duty, they have a register they can check to see if it is safe in pregnancy or not.

No need to go to the doc. The MW will do everything for you.
I am vegeterian so have no problems avoiding meat. But I also only eat fresh salad, don't eat deli food, or leftovers.
It is really hard in the first few months when you don't really feel like eating much anyway. I just ate what I wanted when I wanted as long as it wasn't anything on the not allowed list.

Awww!
You don't have to see your doc at all, can go straight to a mw.
Umm food, I recommend going on the Ministry of Health website, they have a downloadable doc (which mw will give you anyway) of what is safe to eat whilst preg/breastfeeding. It's to the right of the page.

I found the food guidelines are a bit confusing sometimes...basically what others said is what everyone follows...
with bacon I have cooked it myself and eaten it hot, same with salami, have had homemade pizzas with that on it...
with soft cheeses some people say none and others say because cheese in NZ is made from pasturised milk then it is okay...My MW said as long it is straight out of its original packaging - not a wedge from a deli counter - and you only eat it when it is freshly opened - not for days afterwards, then it is okay... but of course whatever you feel comfortable with, I have only had it once and that was just recently...
with leftovers just nuke the hell out of them before you eat them and dont keep any for more than 2 days...
with medications...panadol is ok...my MW suggested I take Strepsils when I had a bad cough at the start so they are okay but most pharmacies will say not to take them so once again it comes down to what you feel comfortable taking...
oh and congrats!!

Oh and like the cheese mentioned above you will get conflicting advice from everyone! Different midwives seem to say different things (ie mine says no salami because it is cured not cooked, but I eat it anyway; she also says no to me dying my hair whereas others say it is fine). Get the phamplet, read the guidlines online and then go with your own instincts.
P.S. my understanding is that the cheese in camembert and brie is fine as it is pasturised but it is the cultured mould that surounds it that isn't? Could be totally wrong though

Mcd's is okay as long as you don't eat stuff with salad in it (ie big mac). Just make sure it is hot and if not reheat it if possible or don't eat it.
Don't eat anything that has been cooked and cooled, or anything that sits in a counter display.
I've eaten most types of akeaways and been okay, I stay away from chicken though. I did get KFC once and threw up about 3 hrs later! Don't go near it no matter how tempted!!.....

Don't think you can stop MS but you could try acupuncture, sea bands, ginger...
Umm Soft cheeses are ok so long as pasturised and you eat it the day you buy it and don't eat it the next day sorta thing.
Avoid deli meats unless piping hot. Although I was naughty and had shaved ham after 20 weeks.
Salads - fresh.
McDs I would always ask for no salad in the burger so knew it was being made fresh and piping hot. Ummm KFC, we had it but I never eat the chicken so for me it was just the potato and gravy and chips lmao.
Agree with what frankie said.
I basically just ate things I was comfortable eating, if it looked dodgy or I was unsure then I avoided but that's just me and what I did.

I've had McD's, KFC & BK. I work in a very busy part of Wellington so they have huge turnover and are always fresh.
It is just what you are comfortable with, heaps of people still have subway whereas others won't go anywhere near it.

i pretty much eat everything apart from sushi and raw fish/seafood. i think the whole eating thing has got competely out of hand. but you have to do whatever you are comfortable with! I also have an ironclad stomach.

Congrat's so exciting!
I avoided all caffine, coffee, tea, fizzy drinks e.t.c
If i wanted a coffee or tea i drank decaf.
Main thing to do is increase fruit, vegies, meat and oily fish like tnned or fresh salmon for omega's.
Eggs are fab too just make sure they are cooked very very well NOT runny.
Morning sickness: If you can eat something before you get out of bed like a cracker, super wine or ginger nut biscuit. This may help.
Bananas are good as is ginger.
One tip my naturapath gave me was to eat protein at every meal. This can stop headaches and is really essential for all rounf health. So protein is food like:
Cheese
eggs
bakes beans
lentils/beans
meat
there are others....
Anyway good luck Also are you taking folic acid? or a multi or fish oil. There is so many opinions on vitamins!!!. Do what you think is right !

i think everyones pretty much covered it with the food thing i just made sure everything was fresh and really hot. For morning sickness, ginger beer helps, and also having a piece of toast or something like that before you get out of bed in the morning can help too, your midwife will give you a pregnancy pack with really good booklets in it which i found really helpful re food and weekly updates and other important things, and a good thing for colds if you didnt want to take anything other then strepsils is hot water, honey and cinnamon. Good luck with your pregnancy and finding a midwife

Big congrats and there isn't anything else you need to do your MW will organise bt etc. Do you know what your blood type is?
NZFood Safety have a list of foods that http://www.nzfsa.govt.nz/consumers/low-immunity-child-pregnancy/pregnancy-food-safety/ are ok to eat during pregnancy.
My Mw essentially told me to avoid the deli counter at the supermarket, same with seafood, sushi etc.
Never had MS unfortunately I think you either get it or you don't. I did find eating small regular meals kept the nausea at bay, marmite on toast in the afternoons was my saviour in the first trimester.
Are you taking FA?

Your MW should be able to give you a script, or GP visits maternity related (should be) free (mine were).
Oh the cheeses thing, so long as its made in NZ then soft cheeses are fine (as they are pasturised, fancy french ones arnt pasturised and therefore arnt fine)
Cant really stop MS but do the things above if you do get it as they can help
Oh and Heaf, your way cute!! (and I am so very jealous!)
