My 25mth old DD has for over a month now had extremely smelly and watery poos..

I'm at my whits end as to what this could be.. GP tested her poos for giardia and any other bugs and causes of runny poos and it came back negative.

I've had her on a lactose free diet for 2 weeks.. She has cooked lactose (eg, if I'm doing macaroni cheese for dinner) but she doesn't eat "raw" milk, cheese or margarine...

It all started after visiting my mum for a couple of weeks and she started giving DD milo and milk - cold as a little drink... She gave up drinking any kind of milk - formula and cows milk from 15mths old... Her everyday diet before the milk was re introduced included a yoghurt and cheese and normal margarine on her sammies..

I'm out of my mind over this - her poo runs down her legs, it absolutely stinks and I think it burns cause she grimaces when she passes it. Not watery like diareha but very loose..

Can anyone offer some advice..?? Do I just cut out all milk - including the soy milk she has with her milo / cereal and see how we go or do I take it further..

Pribiotics..?? Gut cleaning antibiotics..??

To be honest I really have no idea what to say but...my DD went through almost 2 months of this at about 14 months I think and still occasionally has the odd week that its really bad. I actually have no idea what causes it but I know that for her dried fruit of any sort makes it worse, as does wholegrain bread, carrots and capsicum for some reason. I had her tested by the doc and nothing came back so I am really none the wiser but I did an awful lot of reading on the net and this apparently is a very common problem with toddlers. One of the theories I read said that when they go through a growth spurt sometimes their digestive system takes a while to catch up and can cause these types of issues. My DD also eats sand and dirt which doesn't help

I have her on probiotics (mainly to support her immune system) which I don't think made any difference to her loose poos. One thing I did try was making sure she didn't eat too much fruit (no more than 2-3 pieces a day) and subsituted veges for the more processed things in her diet like crakers etc. I also tried to make sure she was drinking enough water. One theory I read said that if a child is constipated then sometimes this shows up as runny poos as they have a blockage and the poo "overflows" round the blockage.

I don't know how helpful any of that is but I sympathise. I know what its like to be constantly changing disgusting nappies and washing clothes stained with poo and its horrible. Hope things improve for you really soon.

Meant to say too that I have no idea about the lactose connection but I would've thought that if she was having stuff containing lactose before the cold milos were introduced and didn't have this problem then it probably wouldn't be that? I don't know much about that though.

One thing I did that helped was to write a food diary of every single thing that Gabrielle ate and when she pooed and how bad it was. That helped me cut out things that were making it worse and things did improve although it didn't go away. Does your DD have really bad nappy rash as well? My DD had terrible nappy rash because the poos seemed to burn and also I guess because of the frequency of the pooing.

Sorry I don't have any advice but didn't want to read and run.  Hopefully you'll find what's causing it soon as it doesn't sound pleasant, for all involved.  Poor bubba.

A friends son had this and he is actually allergic to Gluten, Dairy , soy, etc, so I think it would pay to have her tested for that, just incase, and maybe in the meantime try her on a gluetn free diet and see of it makes a difference.

It must be awful for her :( Something is definitely not agreeing with her,

Tho if you want to test for Gluten allergies etc then you really should keep her diet the same until the test is done, if you cut it out and then have a test it can give a false negative.

Juice is a killer in this house. If my oldest has juice at a party or out as a treat his poo is horrid and lasts for a couple of days. IS she having juice at all?

hi, is her poo yellowish in colour... my daughter has dairy, egg, peanut allergy and lately develloped soy... she was getting runny poos so after she s drank soy...terribly.... i could count on her poo within cca 5 mins,
if you decide to do testing, just to say that Rast blood test neither skin pricks would show a reaction if it affecting bowel.
..you know what i mean?
when skin pric was negative, the dietitian told me this and we did trial swapping to rice milk.
Good luck.

Aww poor little darling! Can't be much fun.
My toddler gets runny poos whenever he's been put on antibiotics, but I also figured out myself that straight cow's milk caused it when he was about 1.5yrs old and he's had soy alternatives since.

I'd recommend trying plenty of acidophilus type stuff to get some good bacteria back in the gut - we give a pinch of Inner Health Plus Powder every day. also the BRAT diet for a few days to see if it settles things down? (bananas, rice, applesauce & toast).
Mum to two very active boys, born October 2008 and December 2010. Getting excited about becoming a Childbirth Educator, and LOVIN being a birth support to amazing and courageous women!
