QuoteReplyTopic: Feet turning in when walking? Posted: 10 August 2010 at 8:28pm
DD has just started walking, and it's quite apparent that her feet are turning in a fair bit of the time. Sometimes the left foot is almost totally in (on a right angle to the front).
Something I should get checked out? Or does it get better as she gets stronger?
I was quite concerned about one of my DD's feet as she had this problem when she first started walking (she didn't walk till 17 months). I happened to see a podiatrist at a course I went to and asked her about it. She said its really common and nothing to worry about till they get a bit older ie over 3 years old. I did mention it to DD's doctor as well and she said the same thing. Probably nothing to worry about but maybe worth mentioning to the doctor if you are there for something else anyway.
Jack is/was the same, his left was also worse. Plunket and the dr never tseemed too worried about it but when he was about 2.5 the dr suddenly got all concerned about it and we were referred to a specialist. He had x-rays and basically they said his bones in his legs are slightly twisted from being in the womb. He may or may not grow out of it completely but it is really common and they don't do anything about it unless it's a huge problem (like the child tripping over a lot etc). So yeah thats what happened with us, I think it is worth mentioning it to the dr next you are in there and just keep an eye on it.
I had this when I was a kid so it's been checked lots with DD (her feet are fine though)
I would recommend just getting it checked out and keeping an eye on it. If it is bad there are different things that can be done- from insoles that are worn in the shoes right up to surgery if it's really bad.
With any luck though it's something she'll grow out of as she gets more used to being on her feet
I was talking with my mum the other day and mentioned it - she said "I remember having a kid like that, even took her to the doctor..." So it turns out I did it too! I have weak ankles and flat arches, maybe DD will end up the same. Good to know that it is reasonably normal though!
I've noticed that one of my DD's feet is still turning in but only if she wears heavier shoes or her gumboots (by heavier I mean she usually wears soft soled shoes but she has two pairs of cheaper chunkier heavier soled shoes). I guess that means one of her ankles must be weaker coz I don't notice the turning in when she is not wearing shoes anymore.
Arianne does the same thing, I did get a little worried about it, took her to the doctor and the doctor wasn't concerned because her legs are straight so fingers crossed it will correct as she grows.
The doctor also said if at 3 years it hasn't gone, then they will assess it again.
Our podiatrist told me that all kids walk a little funny until they are 2yrs and anything that continues beyond that needs checking. Ask the GP for a referral since the feet are not the same.
