Topic: Low Progesterone Posted: 21 January 2009 at 11:56pm |
Ok, so we have been trying to conceive for 13 months and have recently had my first appt at FA which proved I have PCOS.
anyway when I got my first progesterone test on day 21 it was 0.4. After completeing my first cycle of clomid my progesterone is still only 1.9.
I understand that you need to have a level over 40 to sustain a pregnancy......??? Can you still ovulate without having a high level? And how is it fixed, or can it be fixed as I also understand that pessaries and creams wouldn't fix the problem....
I really thought I just had ovulation issues.... T.I.A

Hi Mindy
I don't have a prob with low progesterone, but yes you can still ovulate without having a high level - the progesterone rises AFTER you ovulate. And I'm not sure what number you need to sustain a pg but your level doesn't need to be at 40 in order to get pg. They like to see a level over 10 on a natural cycle and a level of 15 on a medicated one.
There are treatments for low progesterone, but which one you have I think depends on the cause. I've heard of women having to use progesterone creams starting from when they O and others only needing the pessaries when they are pg. The FA people will tell you where to go from here.
And low progesterone is a symptom of PCOS so I'm sure once they get that sorted you'll be fine.

Thanks Emily, your comment did make me feel a little better. For some stupid reason I thought that I would only need to do one cycle of clomid and I would be magically fixed by this miracle drug, now crash landing back to earth I'm facing thereality that more treatment needs to be done lol.
I'm doubting that I ovulated but will continue to do the TTW and keep hoping for the best.

Hi MIndy
I know how you feel. I thought that my surgery would fix me and I'd get pg really easy afterwards. We're only onto our 3rd cycle but I'm also realising its not going to be as easy as I thought it would be.

My progesterone levels aren't as low as yours, but they are low, and as a result I'm on pessaries 3x a day for the first trimester. Did they say why they didn't think pessaries/creams would help? I know there are two ways of taking the pessaries depending on the reason for taking them (I get the unpleasant version).
As Emily said, your progesterone levels rise AFTER ovulation, they help bubs become sticky. This was probably the reason for my m/cs. It's still early days with this one, but it seems to be staying where it's supposed to, and I've been on the pessaries for a week.

Hi,
I also have low progesterone but concieve no trouble - they just keep falling out. I am on clomid and then progesterone pills after ovulation to sustain the pregnancy, so I am surprised that they dont think it will help (not that Ive had any luck so far but it can't hurt to try.

I have just been diagnosed with PCOS but was never told anything about this progesterone thingie. This seems like a whole other issue. Not sure I understand much, but is it quite common for women with PCOS to discover they may have another thing holding them back from conceiving?
