Topic: Early Waking Posted: 11 December 2007 at 6:12am |
Hi there. I have a 21month old who is waking mostly between 5.20 and 5.45am. She has been in a big girls bed for nearly 2 months and for about the last 3 weeks has been waking at this time. Her room is dark so it shouldn't be because it is light so early. She used to be the 12 hour per night girl but now does around 10 and a half.
Has anyone got any strategies on how to get her to sleep longer or am I resigned to the fact that she has just become an early riser. Not a good combo with a mummy who is a night owl and as I am also 35 weeks pregnant any extra sleep I can get is a bonus at the moment. DH has been fantatstic getting up with her but he is getting pretty tired now too.
Thanks in advance

Hmmmmmmm this is a hard one!, I would say in my group of friends that the latest riser is 6.30!, so most toddlers are up and ready for the day before then, not good for pregnant people I understand!!!! and I find anything in the 5am's a bit hard to take!
Ben goes through cycles, some weeks hes up and charging at 5.45 and then the next we might get a random 7 am wakeup, but mostly its between 6-6.30am, so going to bed at 7, thats 11 hours sleep wehich PAFT says is the ideal ( not for me hee!!)
I found putting him to bed later doesn't work or cutting down his day sleep, but maybe someone out there has a good sugesstion, good luck and take heart that you are not the only one up and about at 6am!

Rhiannon goes down at 7pm and is up from 6am, and has a sleep from 10-12.
Although we bring Rhi back to our bed at 6am, as Kent gets up at 6.30am, and i get up about 10mins later as we only have one car, and if i want to go out for the day i need to drop Kent at the station.
Sorry cant really suggest anything.

Both my kids have always been early rises and lately miss two has been waking at 5am-5.45am makes for a long day thank goodness she still has a day sleep most days, for us we live in the country but moving back into town this weekend and I'm sure it's the birds waking her up as they are quite loud and lots of them as lots of tree's I'm hoping once we move she'll sleep a bit later, also my dh gets up earlish too 6-6.30am so any noise about the house tends to wake her up as well.

I'm a big meanie and leave Jack in his room until 7. If he wakes before that I go and put him back to bed. There are heaps of toys and books in his room so he usually plays with them until I get him up.
He does go to bed at 8pm tho

Ashleigh goes to bed at 7 and lately has been waking between 6 and 6.45. I so don't do mornings before 7 if I can help it so I leave a book and her gloworm doll at the foot of her cot before I go to bed and she just plays with them when she wakes, until I can pry myself out of my nice warm bed

Thanks everyone for your support and/or suggestions. I guess we are just going to have to wait and see what happens and get used to being up early. In saying that in just over a month I will be sleep deprived with a newborn again anyway!!
Hubby wants to put a lock on her door so she has to stay in her room but I don't know if I could do that!
We will just see how we go.
Thanks again everyone

Katie I think I have come to the conclusion that little people are just like us, sometimes we wake up early, sometimes we can't get to sleep very easily, and as they become more aware of their surroundings their seems to be a trend developing. Yip I know not what you want to hear because I don't like it much either. I can handle anything with a 6 in front, and really 11 hours is pretty damn good. I must say I wish I could sleep for that long sometimes. We had a 5.45am chatty little man this morning I wonder what the morning will bring.
Hope Lottie has a sleep in for you in the morning.
