Topic: dating scan = CONFUSED Posted: 31 December 2010 at 1:24pm |
I just had my dating scan this morning and by my calculations I should be approx 7 weeks (LMP was 5th Nov and my cycle is approx 32 days) I got my BFP on Dec 15th, yet the radiographer said that I was only 5wks 5 days and that I would of conceived approx 2 weeks ago which would mean after my BFP or only days before???
You could see the heart beating but to me it seemed slow in comparison to when I had a scan at 5ish weeks with my first.
I feel really confused and worried that this means the baby is not growing and its all going to end badly.
Can anyone share their experience with dating scans and EDD's in comparison to your own calculations an what the outcome was.
TIA for any replies.

This is something I have been thinking about. My first was put back 9 days!!! I was so confused. I had been keeping track (loosely) of my cycles.....mainly AF and when I thought I Ov'd. I was pretty sure I had ov'd on time that month so couldnt understand why my dates were put back. However I hadnt done a HPT early.
Now I am waiting on a late AF but with no BFN so I have been thinking. this month I paid more attention and around day 14-15 I had all my ov signs. I tried some old expired OPKs but got nothing....figured they were just old and expired. Then a week later I got STRONG ov signs. AND a positive OPK. So wonder if with DS1 the same thing happened...an attempted ov mid cycle and then proper one a week later...therefore putting my dates back.
Bottom line, even though you will, try not to worry. There is most likely absolutely nothing wrong....and if there is, there isnt anything you can do to stop it so try an dthink positive and enjoy the pregnancy.

5 weeks & 5 days is still quite early too see the heartbeat. So thats a good thing.
It could just be that you Ov late. Or perhaps your dates might match up at the 12 week scan.
Just about everyone i know that has had a dating scan have had there dates put back, so i wouldnt worry too much.
When is your MW appointment, your MW should go over results with you

I am also quite confused about the whole dating thing - I know they work it out based on the last menstrual cycle but I actually wrote down the day we did it without any protection (tmi sorry) and by that day we I should be 2 and a bit weeks less then what they say I am. I told that to the lady doing my scan but she still insisted that my dates are what i've been told. So now we're wondering if something happened the 2 weeks earlier or if baby is possibly just big because she said his measurements are exactly what they should be for my date.....its all very confusing because surely if he was concieved the date we are certain he was he would be smaller in size ?!? its all very confusing.

My dating scan showed that I got my first BFP at barely a week post conception, yet all other scans since have showed baby to be on track with my dates...
Has your midwife/GP offered a f/up scan to see if dates come back to somewhere closer to yours??
Also how accurately did the sonographer measure it? I only ask because mine didnt take very long to bring it up onscreen, measured it and then was done... didnt even make sure he was seeing the whole baby... at such an early stage a few mm can put dates out by several days!
As SMS said though, a heartbeat this early on is generally a pretty good start!
5w5d means you're 26DPO (4 weeks being 14DPO), and you got your bfp 16 days ago, which equates to at least 10DPO, which is entirely possible. I got my bfp at 9/10DPO (I chart temperatures, so there was no question of DPO) as have a lot of other OB charters.

My cycle is about 32 days too. I had a scan at what I thought was 5 weeks and was told that it was more like 4 weeks. We went for another 2 weeks later, so we are going off the scan dates.
That puts LMP 26-08-10 and EDD 08-06-11.
(and EDD by LMP at 01-08-11).
I also got put back a week with both boys (one was born on his scan EDD the other on his LMP EDD).
Hope that helps... it will all be fine and remember, its only an estimate!

Both my pregnancies have been put back a week and it's frustrating!
The first time I m/c'd only a few weeks earlier so it was a bit of a guess but I knew exactly when I had started and stopped.
This time round, I was tracking AF for months and circled on a calendar every single month and for how many days - I had it exactly. I was then put back a week despite being so careful and I was a bit annoyed lol. It would have meant that I tested super early and got my BFP really early too. My mw said maybe I was a bit unwell or something changed that I ovulated later that month.
Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy!

I think it's pretty hard for them to measure, you're only talking a couple of millimetres at this stage so an innaccurate measurement could mean a few days difference. I had my scan at 6 wks 6 days and measured 6 wks 1 day. It seems really common so try not to worry!

Yeah scans definitely aren't always accurate for sizing seeing as babies grow at all different rates.
I didn't have a dating scan, 20wks was my only scan this time which put me a week ahead. If that was right it would mean I got my BFP at 3dpo

sperm can live for a week can't it? so maybe conception just happen quite a while after the sex occured.
At my early scan with number 2 I got put forward 2 days after they did an internal scan as via internal the baby measured 2 days bigger than through the tummy so that makes a difference too, not a huge amount but a difference.
Did they say the heartbeat was slow? This time I had a scan at 7w 5d cos of a bleed and I thought the heartbeat looked slow but I asked the lady and she said it was perfect. Maybe ask you LMC cos it normally gets noted down on the info they get sent from the sonographer.

My dating scan was right to dates i thought, but at my 12 week scan she said baby was 9 days ahead, 2 weeks later i had an emergency scan and baby was measuring the right size, so to my the 12 week lady didnt measure correctly! They say heart beat starts at 6w, so thats strange also... Im sure all is well though!

Dating scans can be out 2 weeks either side!!!! You have to remember that baby is sooo intsy that 1mm can affect your dates a bit so imagine if the sonographer has mismeasured by more than that and how easy would that be to do.
I am sure its all good hunny,.. and I am sure the HB is fine too, maybe you have a little blue brewing in there this time
