So today I am 7w and 2d.

At 3w 6d the Dr got me to do HCG blood test which came back at 140. He wanted me to do them again a week later, so at 5w exactly I had them done again and they were way up to 8650. My first suspicion with that huge increase was twins. The Dr requested I have the blood tests done weekly because I think he suspected the same thing too. So again I had them done at 5w 6d which came back at 31600. I have been having ongoing spotting/bleeding since I found out I was UTD, and I told the Dr after those last hcg results so he sent me for a scan. I went for the scan at 6w 2d (a week ago now). Everything was fine at the scan, saw a gest sac with a baby inside and heartbeat as well, all in the right place so not ectopic, and dates are bang on. Then I did another round of HCG bloods on Monday at 6w 6d and they came back at 28100 so had dropped. Repeated the blood test yesterday at 7w 1d and they've gone up again to 30600!! I'm still feeling really nauseous and yuck and tired all the time.

So my question is has anyone else experienced anything similar? Research of similar experiences suggests blighted ovum or ectopic, but after the scan just a week ago those are ruled out. One possibility is vanishing twin syndrome, which I think could be possible after the huge hcg rise at 5 weeks, and maybe the second twin died and was expelled with the spotting/bleeding before the scan so why it wouldn't have been seen??j Or, of course, the other possiblity is that it is a threatened miscarriage which I was prepared for and expected the results from yesterday to have dropped again, but was gobsmacked when the nurse said they had gone up.

Thoughts, experiences, know of friends of friends etc with the same thing happened to them and what was the outcome??

Thanks in advance.

I probably would not read too much in to it as you may never really know. Why did your doctor request so many hcg's? I think they are a useful tool if you have a question, ie- is it an ongoing pregnancy (if you are spotting / bleeding or have had recurrent mc) or an ectopic etc but I think after you had the scan and saw everything was fine you should have stopped doing them! They do say the more tests you do the more you find and the more you will worry!

Heres for a happy and healthy rest of your pregnancy

thanks for the replies.

M4B no I haven't had any more spotting since Monday.

Birdie the Dr wanted me to have weekly hcg tests after the one at 5w because I think he was a bit alerted by such a huge increase (it was doubling every 1.2 days!!) and it was on the high side for 5w. But also with the spotting/bleeding I was having he still wanted me to continue having the weekly hcg tests to see what the numbers were doing. After the scan I didn't hear from him saying to stop the hcg tests so I went ahead with the next weekly one anyway. Wishing I hadn't now because I'd be none the wiser!

They want me to go back for more blood tests again next week. If the numbers are still rising I'm going to tell them I don't want to do anymore blood tests and might request another scan because that would give a more definite answer. And if all is still as it should be I'll just book in with the MW. If they have dropped again though I think the answer is pretty clear and I would just have to wait for the inevitable.

I would definately go for the scan over bloods, with DD were HCG @ 4W2D = 80
HCG @ 4W4D = 216 (Doubled every 1.4D)
HCG @ 5W2D = 2351 (Doubled every 1.4D)
HCG @ 5W4D = 4948 (Doubled every 1.9D)
HCG @ 6W1D = 15671 (Doubled every 2.4D)
HCG @ 7W0D = 43746 (Doubled every 4.1D)
HCG @ 7W2D = 49325 (Doubled every 11.5D)
I had spotting at 6 and a half weeks with a scan then (putting my dates a week behind), a scan a week later that showed she had grown a week (so all was well). Booked in for another scan at 9ish weeks just to make sure (since HCGs were so slow etc) and she was still fine....
So this time around I didnt get HCGs done, I felt like for me (and this is IMO) they dont really show you anything much about your pregnancy, a scan is way more informative (can see growth, heart beat, some times the source of bleeding etc).
But either way you go I hope its smooth sailing!
