so my twins' 2nd bday is coming up (can't believe it's going so fast!) and friends and family are asking what they can get for our little ones, a boy and a girl. my group of work friends usually pitch in for one big gift (around $100, total) for each others' kids, so now it's our turn, and i don't know what to ask for. and family members are asking what the twins need/want. i was thinking the radio flyer tricycle, but other than that i have no clue.
does anyone have any recommendations for a neat trike or any other big(ish) ticket item that your little ones are, or were, into? thanks in advance!

Haven't been on here in a long time

My little miss was born 7th December 2012 (2.395kg 47cm) a week early. She had IUGR and is still a petite wee thing. Now weighing 7.63kg 68cm

We had her first birthday party on her actual birthday

It was a great day.

I only occasionally check this now, since everyone disappeared to Facebook! I got an email notification on your post though, which is amazing, because while everyone was actually posting here, the notifications kept failing...

Congratulations, that's awesome about your new pregnancy, and wow good growing with number one! Mine was not so well grown (6 lb)! We are probably going to try for #2 soon too :-) Also will be hoping for a girl to balance things out :-) Can't believe we have 13 month olds now! Crazy huh!!

I'm not on facebook so not sure if you are all still keeping in touch on there. It's been a year now since I had my little boy and wanted to see how everyone else has gotten through the year? I had my son via emergency c section on 10 Dec 2012...he was 10lbs 4ozs and 58cm long. Am pregnant again now and due in June...praying for a girl this time :D

Hi all,

Everything is going great. Had the big 1st birthday a few weeks ago. Alex is nearly walking and so full of energy. I have been back at work full time since June now. And Alex goes to daycare twice a week and at my mums from 7am-5pm Mon-Fri. Pretty full on!! But loving him so much.He is so much fun to play with!! Hope all is well.

Hi Mummies! I also have only just found out about these forums. My son (2nd child) was born on the 11 Sept 2012. With my first, I had the support of my coffee group but with the second, not only have i forgot the 'phases' but needing advise from mummies/daddies going through this with their kids at the moment.

No idea - I'm not on FB. Havinh resisted thus far, I'm disinclined to sign up (on principle!). Bit gutted about the group moving there, but I guess it's not the end of the world.

Grace's favourite is "Good Girl Grace!" which she uses to try & convince me she's had enough to eat (hahaha - nice try young lady!!). This is accompanied by hand clapping. super cute! Whoops is cute too!

Baby due the 26th August 2012 and he arrived the 23rd..... He was a large bub at 8lb 7oz but really I think that the size of the baby has nothing to do with it, My friend had her baby 3 weeks early and she was an 8lb'er....... Hope that this helps somewhat....

Hi Tailez,
We're just back from Thailand this week. It was a bit mental, I'm really glad to be home. Grace loved all the attention, & the fact that she got carted around in the front pack everywhere. ;) But my son has picked up an infection - just waiting for his test results to come back (nothing serious, he's still perky AS, but it does mean we have to limit his diet A LOT till his tummy is back to normal, poor kid!).

With regards to the "boring" jolly jumper have you tried any of these ideas:
> putting a tray with a little bit of water underneath him, so he splashes as he jumps
> attaching a balloon to the JJ with string (though the one on Grace's JJ popped yesterday... she didn't mind at all, just wanted to know where it went?!)
> tying gauze ribbons to the JJ (so they float around while he jumps)
> putting a mirror beside him so he can watch himself jump
> attaching a bell or rattle to the JJ

We often have at least one of these things on the go - yesterday we had a balloon AND a mirror. ooh ahh.

Movement is exciting & exhausting - I wish Grace would just sit still sometimes! She's very grabby - trying to get into everything (even though she can't actually move properly yet). & the number of times she boffs herself because she wont sit still...

Babies and logic: not really compatible!

Right, gotta go. Grace went to sleep at 11pm tonight - she's been going down between 12 - 2am since we got back. I'm pretty excited, except now its midnight anyway!! gah!

My Mum & Step Dad & sister are here tomorrow from Dunedin, which will be great. We also have some people coming to fix our carpet at 8am, which is a lot less than great. -sigh-

My little girl Piper arrived 1 day early (induced due to IUGR) weighing 5lbs2oz and is now 11.5 weeks old and weighs 9lbs 1oz

Good to hear from you! Australia was good although just about to land in Brisbane, but due to cyclone we got diverted to Sydney. So after flying there, sitting 1 hour on the tarmat and then into transit lounge for another 1-2 hours we were on our way back to Brisbane, but did about 4 loops in the air before landing as they were even contemplating whether we could land. So considering Alex spent about 7 hours on the plane that day he did really well!! Others on the plane were commentating on his relaxed attitude etc. He is so full of beans, such and active baby. We are crawling on the belly here all over the floor. I cannot even have a shower in peace anymore, he makes it from the lounge to the bathroom to say hello! Can sit alone here too and jolly jumper is almost too 'boring' for him now. He needs so much stimulation just go-go-go! Going to be interesting when he has this crawling mastered on the hands and knees - he just gets on them and rocks and moves his legs only in that position. But watch out - he'll be on his way soon! As for solids, we are 3 times a day with meals and he eats HEAPS. No teeth through just yet - but one is very close!

Good luck with the trip to Thailand! Sounds exciting - and i'm sure it will be a breeze! I was surprised at the number of kids and babies on the plane! And the airline staff were good too! It helps!

great to hear from you! I'd almost forgotten about this forum... whoops.

We're doing well. Grace is into solids too - so far very keen on peach, pear (just as well as we have a massive pear tree!!), banana (with or without avocado) & nectarine. Unfortunately, she'd rather not eat baby slop because no one else eats it. uh oh! Today DS & I both had kumara puree for afternoon tea, just to show her that "all the cool kids are doing it". Worked a treat - she ate the whole bowlful! ;)

She's sitting independently now, which is awesome. & LOVES the jolly jumper. She pivots & shunts herself backwards when lying on her back or her front (as far as I can tell she does this PARTICULARLY so she can pee on the carpet, rather than on the nappy I've put her bottom on. Wasket!).

We are heading to Thailand in about a week, for 2 weeks... with both kids. I think I might actually be completely bonkers to be attempting this!!

How was your trip to Australia? I hope Alex behaved himself for you - flying with a baby can be QUITE stressful, I think particularly because of the public-ness of it? I often feel stressed when I feel like I"m parenting in the spotlight...

But, we've been doing that for the best part of a year now, so as you can imagine, quite a bit of personal stuff has made it to that page! What part of NZ are you in? Congrats to all you new moms out there! I've loved the first few months of being a mom and it only gets better! One thing I wanted to share with you guys was a cuttttteeeee lady bug car seat cover that I found online. I live somewhere where it's pretty cold in the mornings and at night and I always felt bad taking my baby outside without wrapping him up and then I found these car seat covers and it's been so nice! Hi Bex, how are you getting on? We started solids and Alex just loves them! He is on 3 times a day at the moment and eats equivilant to one of those baby food jars at each feed - so making my own now! He is up on hands and knees rocking so it wont be long until crawling - yikes! Rolling all over the place! Off to Oz for a week next week with him to visit my best friend who has Placenta previa (placenta over cervix) so is having a c-section 20th Feb. She hasn't met my boy yet as she was unable to fly over with the condition. Anyway I hope Grace is doing well!

Hi All,

Only just found this thread :-) We had a little girl on the 15th of December, 2 weeks & 1 day overdue. Had everything but a c-section! But she is healthy, weighing in at 9lb 6oz :-)

Hope everyone has a great Christmas with their littles ones & for those of you who are still waiting, good luck.

Hey, it may be that she is setting you up for the child support factor... If she did not name the father on the birth certificate, WINZ will deduct about $20 a week from her pay packet, unless she states who the father is.
Not sure where you are from but there are a number of community law centres around who provide free/by donation assistance/advice/representation on this (its called a 'paternity matter' within the family law field) ... check out www.communitylaw.org.nz to find your local law centre and there is heaps of info on there as well.

Just on the dna test, not sure about court ordered ones, but you can purchase the stuff off the internet and send the samples back to them and then they email you with the results and it only costs about $300, have done it myself so I know thats correct :)

Hi a paternity test (DNA) one anyway would give a definate answer but it costs $1800.
As for a lawyer if you are a student or on low income etc. you can get legal aid.

The way they calculate pregnancy dates can be complicated. One thing I suggest is that the first ultrasound is usually acurate to a few days about the date of conception. With my daughter I conceived her 4 and a half days after ovulation as we were trying for a girl. (boy sperm swim faster but die sooner so it helps the chances of having a boy if you conceive around ovulation but later gives girl sperm more chance)we did it only once so I'm sure of my dates and the ultrasound was only off by 3 days (possibly because I conceived after ovulation)the earlier the ultrasound the more accurate as as babies get bigger there is a variation in sizes.

If you and her have different blood types then finding out babies blood type is cheaper than DNA but not conclusive that the child would be yours (but could rule out paternity). If you do the DNA test it is collected by mouth swab in baby and blood tests from the parents.

Regrdless of anything try to stay calm, be friendly to the mum (even if you are confused and hurt) and if you get the chance to see the child, take an interest, kids need people that love them.

Don't walk away unless you are 1) really sure the child is not yours or 2) you honestly think the child is in a happy situation and you are not wanting to be involved.

If you don't want to be a Dad it is better to leave now then break their heart later, if however you think you can give it a good shot and want to try to make it work go for it. Kids are awesome. Watch the video clip on OH baby about being a Dad it is awesome and that is what a cool dad is like.
