I was in Auckland and was quite happy with how things went. Safety wise I would say it's not so much a case of WHERE you birth, but rather WHO you choose to care for you, and who is on duty when you are delivering. A baby died at Middlemore 18 months or so ago because the duty OB registrar failed to identify fetal distress early enough and order an emergency c-sect,but this could just as easily have happened at Auckland if the same particular doctor had been working there. It was a poor judgement call and could have happened anywhere.
I felt 100% comfortable birthing at Auckland with the gremlins (Maya was delivered at the old Nat Womens and I went there coz I assumed that was the only place to go), and having an independent midwife and access to health insurance meant that I didn't see registrars, I saw a private obstetrician, anaesthatist and paediatrician who I had absolute faith in. Had I not had insurance I would definitely have forked out the $$$ to have the private services just for peace of mind.
But given that you've had two normal deliveries with no complications and aren't having twins I'd say that safety wise go either, comfort wise definitely go Auckland. There are a lot of publications & papers produced by MOH and each of the DHBs that might be able to give you the 'facts'...but it will prob still come down to experiences and opinions of those that have birthed at each place.

Have done some research for you and found the following - not sure if they will be helpful or not - but worth a look:

Safety first, I can put up with a lot of discomfort for the sake of my health and a healthy baby. Then if by some slim chance there are any complications you have the best medical care on hand. No idea sorry Deb as we dont get midwives here, but if I was you I would probably choose the nice midwife in the new unit at Middlemore, then transfer to a birthcare from there. sounds complicated, is there anyway of checking out the midwife, speaking to previous mothers they have delivered?
Can you go and have a look around the 3 different places and get a feel for each one.

So i have been thinking about where i want to have this baby. location wise middlemore is better, reputation wise auckland, comfort and food wise afterwards birthcare. arrrrggghhhh, doing my head in.

i know that middlemores new unit will be up and running by feb so that is good, but chances are i will still either have to transfer to somewhere else or go home after the birth.

i was at auckland for the last two - but i will have to pay for parking if i use the hospital midwives and again transfer afterwards.

birthcare would be nice but i cant guarantee i wont have problems or need another induction and i hear very mixed reviews about actually birthing there.

AND i have met a nice midwife today who only works at middlemore now and had good things to say about the incidences of intervention there compared to auck, where she has also worked. BUT i am meeting another midwife on tues next week who i saw briefly after gabriel was born and i really liked her - but she only does auck or birthcare....

And then there is the dilemma of how do i find out if the midwife is any good really...???

You would think this should be an easy decision.
