It goes under the arm (or rectally, God forbid!!) and is certainly accurate enough to check if baby/child is well or otherwise. If a high temperature is noted (38+) it beeps differently than for a regular temp. It was about $20-$30 from the local pharmacy and I've had it for about 2-3 years with no probs.

ETA: when it comes to taking an underarm temp I just hold the arm close to the baby/child until the reading is ready (ie it beeps). When my children reach about 2+ they actually quite like to wait and listen for the beeps. Babies don't care. For the in-betweens I usually hold them close in a cuddle or for a story. It seems quite good. I originally bought one of those Tommee Tippee ones from the supermarket but could never get Matt to keep still for long enough to take his temp with it under his arm. It seemed to take forever to do the reading. I find the ear one heaps easier - only takes a few seconds & I can use it while he sleeps too.

You can use it 20 times in a row and it gives you really varied results each time. But my sister has a good one (maybe Braun?) that she paid around $100 for and says it is good. In the end I got a Tommee Tippee one from the supermarket for $15 and it works fine. You can use it either under the arm or rectally.
