thanks for all the advice guys. I went with a digital underarm, rectal, oral one from tommee tippee. we have the one Busy mum has from when i was temping while ttc - havent used that on ella yet.

We use an ear one - similar to the braun one but we got it in oz - its one doctors etc use and was a similar price to the braun one - it is fine.

Ella had a rectal one done at kids first that weekend we were there - apparently hospital policy said on first admission that has to be done for the records. Daddy couldnt watch that one!!!! Poor bubba... We have one like this. It goes under the arm (or rectally, God forbid!!) and is certainly accurate enough to check if baby/child is well or otherwise. If a high temperature is noted (38+) it beeps differently than for a regular temp. It was about $20-$30 from the local pharmacy and I've had it for about 2-3 years with no probs.

ETA: when it comes to taking an underarm temp I just hold the arm close to the baby/child until the reading is ready (ie it beeps). When my children reach about 2+ they actually quite like to wait and listen for the beeps. Babies don't care. For the in-betweens I usually hold them close in a cuddle or for a story. We have the one that you can get with your flybuys points. Really good one but I can't remember the name of it. We also have a cheap one that you do under the arm and in the mouth. I bought an ear one from the pharmacy and took it back coz it was hopeless. Don't remember the brand sorry .

i have a tempteller one that i got off TM about 3yrs ago for about $30 i'm not sure what the model# is but it looks similar to the one you're looking at, just a different shape.

I bought one of the cheap ear ones from TM too, after someone raved about how great they were to me and it is hopeless, just like yours Kelly!

We've got a Braun one. It seems quite good. I originally bought one of those Tommee Tippee ones from the supermarket but could never get Matt to keep still for long enough to take his temp with it under his arm. It seemed to take forever to do the reading. I bought a cheap ($30) ear thermometer off TM and it is useless. You can use it 20 times in a row and it gives you really varied results each time. But my sister has a good one (maybe Braun?) that she paid around $100 for and says it is good. In the end I got a Tommee Tippee one from the supermarket for $15 and it works fine.
