I used to temp at 4am when Willie got up for work coz some mornings we BDed then so it kept my temps consistent. I'd just pop the thermometer in when I heard his alarm go off and scribble the temp on a paper next to the bed then go back to sleep.

    Author: KiwiL
Subject: 8355
Posted: 19 June 2007 at 9:09am

Hi again Kazzle,

Another thing you could ask your doctor is if he/she can refer you for a scan. You'll have to pay for it of course, but they can have a little look inside and see if anything can be seen that may be preventing you from getting pregnant. In my case they were looking for cysts or anything not expelled after my miscarriage, but they can also check to see if everything was emptied out after your last birth, or if you possibly had an infection. If there is something, (like in my case where they found the cysts) they can begin to treat that.

But if not then you can be a little reassured that things are just taking their time. Sometimes it's just nice to know either way. My scan cost $175 - for me it was money well spent.

Also, where did your DH get his swimmers tested? If it was just at a normal lab, you can pay to get them tested by a fertility clinic. They are a lot more accurate and will be able to tell you if his situation is anything to worry about.

Usually, you'll be sent for these sort of tests before you get referred to a fertility specialist.

Anyway, good luck with the charting. I'd do what Busymum suggested and do your temps at 5am. You should still be able to see a pattern that early.

My neighbour TTCed for 4 years thinking that she was timing it for ovulation, but was doing it a week early! They finally got pregnant the very first month they tried to avoid a pregnancy (due to work commitments!). I think Emma did something similar, though not for so long ... missed ovulation while TTC with no temping. Just give it a go for a month or two, just until you know your cycle. That's all it needs.

Either that or quickly do your temp at 5am and put it back in your drawer. Then when you are properly awake you can turn the thermometer back on and it will still show you your temp from 5am.

I guess you could always do that and then compare?

My doctor found it really useful to get an idea on what my body was up to.

So, when I started having problems I had my charts to prove that things weren't looking quite right. I am not sure that my doctor would have sent me for tests quite so soon if I hadn't had the charts.

Charting can be a bit of a pain, but I guess it also shows that you're doing everything you can to help yourself as well. Besides, I learnt a lot more about the signs my body was giving me than just knowing when/if I was ovulating.

Good luck!
L

You are probably better to wait until about 12 months TTC, although, having said that, age can be a concern to fertility, but you obviously conceived Rhiannon no problems? How long were you TTC with her?

Basically, when all looks good as far as male and female fertility, they recommend about 2-3 years TTC before taking action, and that's for primary infertility. Obviously though, age is a factor in that 2-3 year recommendation.
