I went up and saw them a few hours ago. Stacey is doing great, feeding is a bit of a problem. Daniel suck a few times and then gives up and doesn't want to do it anymore. So she is expressing and feeding him with a little medicine cup. Wow, Stacey did an absolutely fabulous job having a natural birth with very minor intervention with a posterior babe! That's awesome - good work Stacey

Midwife sounds like she knew what she was doing too... that's always a help.

wow thanks 'daddy2b' Richard. My husband didn't get to see the 'labour' as such as we had an elective ceasar (and the other two aren't biologically his) I don't think we are having another one but part of me feels he missed out on a 'great' birthing expereince.(me i could do with out it) so thank you for your insight to a DH/mans point of veiw.

For those looking to pass on advice to their partners, I would say two things. First, it SUCKS seeing your other half in so much distress. You might have an idea in your head of how it's going to be based on what you've seen on TV, but that's always different because it's some female actor you know nothing about pretending to be a person you know even less about. So all I would say is 'be ready for it'. I had been warned about that part so it made things easier. If I wasn't ready, I might not have been so useful. Be ready for it, and develop a strategy for coping. In my case, it was to avoid looking at her face, and to have complete faith in the fact that the midwife knew what she was doing, and that labour is inherently painful so there is actually nothing wrong.

The other thing is (I think) to know your place in the birthing room. I knew that all the medical stuff was going to be handled by the pros, but I also knew there wasn't really going to be a damn thing I could do to ease DW's situation. I made up my time by balancing out the two roles of "midwife's assistant" (helping her move DW around, passing her blankets and towels, helping with the mental boosting for DW etc) and by just being there during the 'breather' times when DW had her eyes open. I imagine with so many strange people in there it might have been a bit bewildering for her, so for her to open her eyes and see a familiar face such as mine probably helped, even if a tiny bit.

Hey gals and guys, thought I'd drop in to say hi and let you know a bit about our day today. Mummy and Baby are both doing well after their ordeal this morning. 10 fingers, 10 toes etc.

For me, the rather abbreviated story goes something like this:

At 4am I awoke to notice DW wasn't in bed. She was when I went to sleep, although her disappearance in the night is nothing unusual at the moment so I thought nothing of it and fell back to sleep. At 4:30am she returned to our bedroom to say to me that my prediction from the previous night (that we wouldn't see him that night) was wrong. When I asked 'why?' she replied "labour", in a very polite tone.

So I got up and switched into 'crisis' mode. Not that it was a crisis, but my body has a mode it goes into when doing the right thing becomes critical and it's important to act calm and calculated in everything it does. We then went through contractions for a while. I said to her she should really decide when she wanted to call the midwife. I wasn't sure how long this would drag out for and didn't want to disturb her sleep in the small hours of the morning. We eventually waited until 6am, which the midwife was more than happy about.

Off to the delivery suite. DW was good in the car, with only a couple of contractions on the way (they were getting heavier by this stage) and just one whilst in the corridor at the hospital.

We arrived at about 6:20am. Enter our midwife... She gave DW an internal and found her 5cm dilated already! Help, neither of us expected that. We went through a few more contractions, and put DW on the CTG to check she and baby were ok. It was interesting because each time she'd have a contraction, about half a minute later his heart rate dropped considerably. The midwife called in a doctor at that point just to make sure it wasn't a concern but it was fine. So away we went. DW's contractions were intensifying a lot and the midwife offered her the gas which, after some deliberation and a couple of contractions, she eventually decided to accept.

As this went on, the midwife did another internal exam and found a bit of cervix getting in the way of his head. She tried DW in a few different positions to see if it would help him get past it, and we thought at one stage he might have. But as things moved on, DW began to experience some pretty harsh pains in her back and the front of her belly. I think from memory she suggested that she wanted to push for the first time at about 9:20am.

Her efforts were huge, but he didn't seem to be making a whole lot of progress. It was difficult to keep telling DW she was doing great, even though she was, because he just looked so stuck. I could see a bit of his head inside her but with each push, not a lot of movement.

All of a sudden, the intimate 2-person band turned into about 6 of us. People were muttering things of Ventousse being an option. Our midwife suggested she felt he might be posterior, but nobody else felt this way. So we proceeded with a bit of "wait and see".

By this stage, it was 10am and DW was looking exhausted after 40 minutes of pushing. You can imagine how she felt when the midwife, trying to encourage her, said "I think we will see this baby by lunch time". The midwife then struck a deal with her and said "What about by 11 o'clock?". The pushing continued and by this stage DW had her legs in the stirrups - slightly more comfortable for me who had been supporting one of her feet on my hip for about 30 minutes and had a totally dead left leg from leaning on it! Baby came out a bit more, but the midwife became a little concerned about the tightness of the area trapping him inside DW. She was trying to insert her fingers in to give the skin a bit of a stretch to negate the need for an episiotomy. It looked like it might work at one stage, but it just wasn't to be. Pushing and pushing was tiring DW out and despite best intentions, there just wasn't enough room for him to get out without some intervention.

So the midwife started prepping for an episiotomy. DW (whose fear of being cut is equivalent to my fear of needles) became a bit anxious, and the size of the local anaesthetic needle was not small either (I have not idea why it was so big). Although the midwife put the local in during a contraction, DW still felt it. When it came time to make the cut, DW was quite frightened. This was definitely the hardest part for me. Up unitl now, I had managed by telling myself that the pain and screams were a normal part of labour and to follow the midwife's lead. But I knew how much the talk of an episiotomy had scared DW, and I was really worried for her sake, as well as what effect her fear might have on baby if she became too anxious. This was a fear she had that was very real and I can only begin to imagine how she must have felt, having had so much pain during labour already and now it had come down to "we have to cut you get him out". I found it really hard not to cry at that point. In fact, just reliving it now in my head is making me do it (not a bad thing since I haven't really had a chance to just be alone and get that stuff out of me as yet).

But that was the worst of it. After that, with room to get baby out, DW only had two more contractions worth of pushing and he was out. First the head, then the rest of him flew out shortly after. He was looking at us. At 10:59am, Daniel Ross Greaney was born.

"He was looking at us?" you ask. Yes. He was posterior! After an entire pregnancy of being anterior, he had at some point rotated himself around to become posterior. So when the midwife said she thought he was and nobody agreed, she was right. She (the midwife) said to me afterwards that she did wonder about his position when DW started having back pain and pain in her front. That's fairly typical of posterior labour apparently. Everyone involved also said that it's unusual for a posterior baby to have a 'normal' labour, and that most end up needing C-sections. Our midwife said that this was probably a case of 'ignorance is bliss'. She said that DW just believed she could push him out and there was never any "oh but he's posterior so you'll have trouble" trains of thought - simply because none of us really knew for certain.

But man, that was incredibly hard work. Emotionally I was just shattered when he arrived. I just wanted to sit down and cry. Nothing to do with 'the joy of birth'. I had seen my wife in agony for far too long and after putting on a brave face, I wanted to let go. I did find a good strategy for dealing with her discomfort at the beginning - talking to the midwife whilst comforting DW. I found when i didn't look at her face, I was much less likely to get overwhelmed by it all. In a way, I behaved like another medical professional. As the labour progressed, this became more difficult but I think I was pretty level-headed throughout.

So that's all from our side. She's staying in hospital tonight so I'm here all by my lonesome, bar one tired Golden Retriever who has been at his grandparents place for the day.

Sorry to disappoint but you'll have to wait longer to see photos. I took some, and so did the grandmothers and while I have a print I don't have any digital versions. I could take a photo of a photo and put that up, but I'm just too tired tonight. Hopefully, we'll see Mummy Becks tomorrow for a photo shoot :)

I got a txt from Stacey to say Daniel Ross arrived at 1059 this morning. He was 7lb 12 oz. Haven't heard how things are going yet but i'm hoping everything is going ok. Will hopefully get a pic tonight or tomorrow (just see how she is going first). I did well with my guess for her.
