at birthcare the nurses bought in a hammock because my room mates baby wouldnt go to sleep or stop crying, the hammock worked like a charm

My concern would be that the baby would get used to the hammock and then not settle in a cot when s/he gets bigger. I know how u feel about getting into bad habbits! with izobel her mother always carried her around and never sat down with her, so when iz was with us she expected us to do the same and used to SCREAM if we sat down with her, took ages to get her out of that habbit.

i suppose if there is really no difference, and since we have the bassinet already from izobel that im probably not wise spending $150+ on a hammock, that maybe i should just use that, then we can move baby to its own room, when its sleeping more through the night.

im more comfortable with a cot to be honest.
i find bassinettes are nice but they are a wste of money to me lol. and hammock weell i think baby needs support for back while sleeping JMO

Sorry still not convinced The babies bones quickly harden after birth and therefore are not as flexible as they were in the womb. Im still for the bassinet or cot

I forgot to add, we never had any probs getting our bubs in or out either. there are some good ones on trade me for fair prices, so i might have to start saving (hve a wee while before i will be needing it!!)

Total hammock fan here!
We used ours for both babies and it helped settle them so well.
Contrary to common opinion, they actually do have good back support in there, the pure wool mattress is virtually the same as the ones you'd find in a bassinette and the hammock   supports the natural curve of baby's spine. Plus, as Anna said, it is more comforting for baby to be cocooned in there as it mimicks the womb (Hubby's Grandma was very concerned about the same thing so I found all this info to calm her down!)
I found that the bouncing/swinging was great for settling bub when they stirred as well, a bit like being rocked. (Ooops, you said that too Anna! )
Annnnd it was a godsend for Benjy's reflux!

I had a basinette for both my babes but if I did it again I would definitely want a hammock!!   Our basinette was used for about three months, a hammock can be used for a lot longer. I am not sure I would be so concerned about back support for bub, they have just spent the last nine months squished up, seems like it could be quite comforting for them. Personally I like the bassinet over the hammock. Just like we need back support Im sure a baby does too (We we would surely get a sore back sleeping on a hammock every night). It looks like it would be more difficult getting a baby in and out of a hammock too. Hi ladies,

Just a query, have been lookin on trademe and does it make any difference using a baby hammock vs a bassinet during the 1st few weeks of having baby home? or is it just personal preference?
