Luckily the loo isn't far from our bedroom, and I managed to sit on the toilet before the worst of it came. It wasn't a *huge* gush but there was still a fair amount of fluid. Once it slowed down I wore maternity pads, and managed OK with them. The only thing we really did for 'protection' was to put a folded up towel on the passenger seat in the car.

No pads would have saved me though - there was quite a lot - I used a towel. I mean, I know it's not always a big gush like in the movies, but even so - are you wearing pads for the last couple of weeks or just risking it? Are you doing anything to protect (for example) your matress or your car upholstery?

For the women who are already mums, what was it like when your waters broke? Was it before or during labour? Was it a gush or a trickle? For some reason I'm really curious and apprehensive about this bit at the moment.
