With Andrew I was at the hospital (I was induced) and we heard the pop and then just after that (about 2 minutes) the contractions started and they were bad.

With Josh they were broken for me, and just after that the contractions started.

my waters both broke at hospital afther labour had started. second time mw broke them. i use to sleep with a towels under my sheet not that would have done anything it was a big pop and a huge gush of water. so i dont bother with any protection if thay pop thay pop and will have to deal with it when it happens.

i know some of the nappy stores like diapers express sell disposable matress protectors.

mine broke in hospital when i went to the toilet.

but i did have a friend who woke up in a pool of water at 26weeks and just thought shed wet the bed (random) and 4 days later told her midwife and she was already 4cm dialated.

i woke up and went to the loo to pee at around 415ish am and was just in the process of climbing over df to get into bed when i kinda felt a bit of a trickle and then just as soon as i got to the bathroom they gushed. i just shoved a towel between my legs and 'waddled' back to the bedroom to tell df my waters had just broken and could he ring the m/w. about 10 mins later contractions started.

Because they can go anytime from 26+ weeks, I felt that taking precautions would be a waste of time lol. My first waters popped in labour (I was already at the hospital), second ones didn't pop, third ones trickled a day before I went into labour (ie two days before due date). Mine broke at 7am the day I went into labour, just as I woke up and was about to get out of bed. Luckily the loo isn't far from our bedroom, and I managed to sit on the toilet before the worst of it came. It wasn't a *huge* gush but there was still a fair amount of fluid. Once it slowed down I wore maternity pads, and managed OK with them. Apparently only a small percentage of women have their waters break before labour actually begins.

Mine broke & not just once - several times. And a couple of those times it was a huge gush- ending up with saturated pad, undies, pants & big puddle beneath me.
Definitely have towels, mattress protector, pads or nappies handy oh & a rubbish sack or something for the car, just in case.

well if its anything like when my waters broke i knew that it wasnt i need to pee but omg what the heck was that!!.
i felt a pressure and had enough time to run from my lounge to the toilet before they started leaking, looked funny with my legs kind closed and racing through my house lol.
pads dont work at all at absorbing the water they were saturated in a matter of seconds, disposable nappies or a towel were the only things that worked.
I went through alot of pads until my mw said that it was pointless and an expensive way.

I felt my waters pop before I went into labor then it trickled and had two gushes. I didn't have anything in place to protect anything. Next time I will protect my mattress though I think because I was asleep when I felt my waters pop so got to the toilet before anything came out.

I was planning on wearing pads but never got around to it as I went in labour early. I woke up one night to go to the bathroom (standard pregnancy practice ) and felt a warm trickle down my leg and I knew! No pads would have saved me though - there was quite a lot - I used a towel. We put a couple of extra towels in the car for the trip to the hospital and all is fine with the upholstery.

I'm just wondering what precautions people are taking about their waters breaking? I mean, I know it's not always a big gush like in the movies, but even so - are you wearing pads for the last couple of weeks or just risking it? Are you doing anything to protect (for example) your matress or your car upholstery?

For the women who are already mums, what was it like when your waters broke? Was it before or during labour? Was it a gush or a trickle?
