My Mum has asthma and I get eczema so I avoided peanuts during my entire pregnancy with her, I also exclusivly breastfed for as long as I could which is supposed to help minimise the chance of food allergies and she still has hers.

In saying that, I am still not eating anything with peanuts in it for this pregnancy. It is absolutely terrifying living with a child with a deadly food allergy- you are in constant fear all the time and its not something I would ever wish for anyone and if not eating peanuts for a few months minimises the chances of this child not having to live with it then it seems like such a small sacrifice.

I discussed this with my GP prior to TTC. There are some studies that show links between maternal allergies (any sort) and nut allergies (in the child) when peanuts are consumed during pregnancy and breast feeding.

I decided to avoid nuts because it is easy enough to do if you are aware - like avoiding alcohol and sushi really.

However, if I had not known to discuss this in advance, and I had not stopped prior to concieveing, I would not be beating myself up over it now as the research is relatively young and the risks relatively low.

I craved peanut butter on toast a lot during my MS stage and I thought, dammit, if its the only thing I can keep down I'm going to eat it! I asked a doctor at work about this, and he said there was some evidence to suggest an overload of nuts in pregnancy can lead to an allergy, but I think you would have to eat a hell of a lot of them. In saying that, my sister, too, ate a lot of peanut butter when pregnant and her eldest girl has a sensitivity to peanuts, but not a full blown allergy (she just comes up in hives). Luck of the draw, I say. I mean, think about it, when our mothers were pregnant and didn't know all this stuff or even have scans, and ate whatever they wanted, and it wasn't a big deal!

Phew, rant over (this hit a nerve with me for some reason!)

Maybe if you have allergies yourslef, you are at higher risk of having kids with allergies so you might want to be more cautious.

it hasnt been a huge prob for me as i am not a great nut fan but in saying that if there is a bowl of peanuts sitting there I wouldnt be able to help myself.

O.k if you eat peanuts at every meal, maybe its a no-no, but seriously to not eat peanuts at all, do you know how many products actually contain peanuts or have been processed on the same equipment as other products containing peanuts!

I LOVE peanut butter, but only indulge once a week, if that!

No offence intended here, if I come across that way
