ditto the nissan primera!!   we had a sedan pre-babies and loved it also.
it has great bootspace, apart from when the dog and the pram is in the back and they are great to drive. ours has a fancy bodykit on it too
the in-laws had a rav4 and got rid of it as it was too thirsty....we also had a toyota surf before the primera and they are great!! we are going to get another one in a few years.

We have an Isuzu Bighorn and it is awesome. Fantastic boot space and an all round excellent car. 4WD and auto. We have a Nissan as well, a cerfio (sp??) its a god car, easily fit 2 carseats (as we do that almost everyday in the backseat) and is an auto (I can drive a manual but prefer an auto) and has all the other stuff you said (I broke the stereo a while ago so at the moment our stereo is my MP3 player), the boot holds so much, my pram is in there and I can still fit in a weeks groceries and still have room to put more in. My next car will either be a mitsi leguem or a different station wagon.

if it would just be a town car then we would look at a station wagon but its just that it will have to go out on the farm and a normal car is just too low to be cruising round paddocks!!!
we have been warned about mitsi auto gear boxes as apprently they are week. but if i would drive a manual we would look at one lol.

We have got a Honda CRV, 2005 and it is AWESOME. Looks nice, a "ladies 4wd" I saw someone talking about. For us it was a toss up between the new RAV4's and the CRV and the CRV won hands down. We found the RAV4 a bit gutless, even as a 2litre (CRV is 2.4l VTI) and it was way smaller on the inside. The CRV gets 3 carseats in the backset (and heaps of leg room) plus a HUGE boot (with a picnic table) cd player (good stereo) air con etc etc, and reasonably economical. Travels well, easy to drive. Not quite as "sexy" as the new rav4's but the Facelift models (from 2001, I think) are very nice looking.
We did also look at the mitzi challenger and the ford escapes, but the CRV was about $5000 cheaper than the Mitzi and about $10,000 cheaper than the escape.

We have a mitsi legnum - I love it! Ours is a 99, V6 twin turbo manual (rare apparently) and is terribly uneconomical But it is a spacious station wagon and 4WD.

df wouldnt touch a ford with a 10 foot pole lol. he is a holden man an di am a ford chick so make for some interesting car talks in our house!!i love the idea of a ford though. we are thinking we may go with a nissan terrano as we have our new bosses on on loan for a couple of days and its been great. df picked it up tonight and he has been h aving fun in it. there was heaps and heaps of room behind the front seat so tash wasnt kicking the back of my seat and i couldnt get over how big the boot was!!
df also said that he wasnt to keen on the station wagon type 4wd as they will be a bit low for cruising round the farm in and would scrape heaps and heaps.

I am lucky enough to have a work wagon, I have a Ford Escape, it the the best car I have ever had. But currently I am having to drive my dad's work wagon it is a Ford Territory, it is the worst wagon ever! We have had nothing but problems with it since we got it. They are both 4wd and have huge boot space, both are really economical.
I know you can now pick up the Escape for less than 10K really worth a look into.

My dp drives a Subaru Impreza. It is a 5 door station wagon. He is surprising how much boot space it has! I was shocked when he came home with it as I thought they were really expensive to run...Nup not at all. Has been a really good car for us.

I couldnt go past the Nissan R'Nessa. Amazing boot and cabin space. The back seats move forward and back making the already big boot HUUUGEEE! Could def fit two carseats in.. I also went for this when my Honda Accord got smashed into cos I dont need to lean down to put Ethan in the car, he is at my height. Also really easy to "walk" into the back cabin space as there is not handbrake etc in the way... (It is a foot operated "hand" brake..) Mine is auto, column shift (which you get used too really quickly) The front seats also "spin" around and face the back seats, so we can have a "picnic in the car" if we need... Also means you can use the seats as beds.

Can you tell i love it!!!

We've got a Toyota Caldina 1999 (not the turbo version) - it's 2L 4WD, has everything you listed in your want list. I think they go for around the $8-$9k mark. I love it, and couldn't wait to get one when we sold our smaller car.

we have a mazda lavante, its very good, adn economical aswell it 4wd. we like it cause it not a 'big' 4wd type truck.

we hate our primera camino. we have had nothing but problems with it since the day we got it-it stalls heaps of the time(and yes its auto, yes autos can stall)and after having many mechanics look at it we still dont know why it stalls, it is ok on gas for long trips but not so much on the short trips, it does have a big boot though but the boot gets filled with crap, the radio is crap, the central locking is a bit dodgy and the button on the key doesnt work, and just lil things like that...
we dont really want a station wagon as they probably wont go round the farm very well, and i have enough trouble with parking our car as i is and station wagons just seem longer then our car.
we will be going to our fav car dealer as the guy who owns it is a good friend of both out families and trade our car in.unless we could borrow a car then we would send urs to auction as we would probably get more for it

thanks for the insight ladies. i never though about the rav4s. not sure df would be happy driving a more 'ladies' wagon. but i do way more driving then him any way.

DP wants a Mitzi legnum..... haha in his dreams. They tiptronic(so sorta like a manual & auto) Station wagon.

But we have 2 cars already...
1 Honda integra 4door- can fit 2 car seats & room in boot for pram/stroller & groceries(did have trouble with fitting the pram i wanted in there- lucky i tried before hand)Its got all the extra but is a manual.
Then we have the 4x4 subaru station wagon. Another manual

I suggest heading to turners car auctions or even heading out of the Waikato ie: AKL or BOP car fairs to score cheap ones.

ETA: I do miss my primera tho hehe they good cars

It is so economical tho I drive from Putaruru to Opotiki and it uses approx 1/4 of a tank. I have a ford telstar station wagon (looks exactly the same as mazda capella wagon) and I LOVE it!! Nice big boot and definately enough room for 2 carseats. I drive a VW golf. It's surprising big in the back and the boot! I love it, but the next car I want is one of the new Rav 4s. The four door kind. We have a Mitsubishi Galant, it has good boot space, fits two car seats in the back. We bought it as an auto but the auto transmission failed pretty soon after and we changed it to manual. Apparently Mitsi's auto's are not that great, so be aware of that.

Our other vehicle is a Nissan Serena. It's a 1992 (or thereabouts? lol) basically a "mummy van". It has 7 seats plus a fold-down seat for an optional 8th person. We bought it s/hand last year for just under $5,000 so they seem very good value. They don't have a lot of boot space but if you only have two car seats in the back, you can fold up one of the back seats (like a Pajero) and have a lot of space that way.

we have a nissan avenir, Its great. Not 4wd though. Just had a look on TM and there are quite a few on there newer than 1999 and the cheapest starts at about $6500 but it has 142000ks . My BIl had a Nissan Terrano, don't know much about them tho. Willie has a giant Nissan Safari, long wheel base (as in about as close to a truck as you get without being a truck) but the short wheel base ones are quite cool, and less bulky.

hey ladies,
df and i are talking about trading our car in when we get pg with #2 if not before and i am just wondering what u all drive and what u love/dont love about it.
we have a few requirements- has to be a auto as i cant drive a manual, central locking, decent boot space, room for two car seats, must have a good radio with cd player, power steering, electric windows,ecomonical, and df would prefer it was newer the a 99 and he woiuld like 4wd as it would most likely end up cruising round the farm.
we are thinking about possibly and nissan terrano but we cant afford to spend mega bucks.
