Hey simsam, hope things are getting better?
Want some advice from the itching queen? lol
Obstetric cholestasis can occur anytime but is more usual in the 3rd tri. The itching starts on the soles of feet and palms of hands (this is were our blood pools) then spreads to the rest of the body.
For me there are no external cures for the itching as its in my blood stream, but I have found cold ice packs helpful as they constrict your blood vessels so there isnt so much "itchyblood" going through to your feet and hands, you can also get aqueous cream with menthol which is quite soothing when you have scratched yourself raw.

Thanks Simsam, I have been experiencing the same kind of thing but more from the waist down. Horrible especially when combined with the itchy breast thing and very embarrassing in public!

Just had another thought - apparently if it gets REALLY bad there's also some sort of medication that acts as a mild skin anesthetic.. not sure if it'd be ok when pregnant though!!

Its a lot better today (maybe I paniced too early!!) but will still talk to my midwife about it. i got that on my hands over xmas and now my hands and wrists are really bad with dermatitis, when not pregnant i usually only get dermatitis on 2 fingers but it spread real bad and hydrocortizone doesnt work for everyone, i get worse when i use it when pregnant. maybe talk to your doc about something that cna help relieve the itchyness, there are things out there that help relieve itching, but when pregnant sometimes it takes a little experimenting to find what works for your skin as it changes its sensitivity.

I get this too (and I'm not preggie).

I do find it's a lot worse when I haven't shaved for a day or two (or more), and I totally know how frustrating it is. And then I get annoyed with myself when I wake up in the morning and my legs are raw.

DH has taken to slapping me and telling me off when I itch.. in a loving way of course.. Eek! Sounds scary! Still, at 30 weeks the prognosis for bubs is really good, at 32 even better (things I have learnt while trying to keep my babies in as long as possible).

No worries - I had never even heard of it till Kell told us about it! Thanks heaps for all the advice. I put aloe vera gel on this morning and that really helped, so will keep putting that on I think. Will definatley talk to my MW about it next time I see her.

Cold aloe vera gel from the fridge was really good and calamine lotion. I had it from about 27 weeks and it drove me mad. Talk to your LMC about it mine wasn't cholestasis or the other thing is called PUP, something about pustules in pregnancy but can't remember what the U stands for. Definitely talk to you LMC, avoid heat, hot baths, warm socks etc and use cool things to relive it. My midwife thought it was a reaction to hormones but same as you i used to scratch until I bled and it lasted for about 6 weeks after i gave birth too, which seems to point to the hormone thing

I have that TOO I tied all the natural things and none of them worked in the end I went to the good old Hydrocorazone (sp?) was told it is on after your 1st tr and the other thing I did was shave my legs (bet that was a sight... seeing I am 40weeks) and that seem to have helped still get it sometimes but not as bad as b4 another good one is QV lotion to keep legs moist. Obstetric cholestasis - it's a liver condition which can be serious, but it only occurs in third trimester.

Some people find their pre-existing dermatitis/exczema gets worse during pregnancy or that they develop it despite having never had it before.

Does anyone else get this? I am so itchy all down my legs, once I start scratching  I cant seem to stop!!! Its driving me mad. Managed to scratch my legs raw during my sleep (not sure how I managed it...but I did!!)

Does anyone know what I can put on my legs to stop them itching - or does anyone have any other ideas?
